Tabletop Warhammer?

Commander shadowsun ordered fro go Wednesday, got a message this morning saying delivery will be today! Yay!

Friend visiting Friday with farsight, longstrike and a hammerhead.

eBay preorders for a riptide, 3 broadsides, 3 crisis suits, 1 set of pathfinders and a bomber.

I take ages to paint tho, even to produce average figures! Just a shame I have to wait a month to buy battleforces. Annoyed they arn't out this month.
 
I can start at 8pm on Friday, if anyone else is up for then.

Discoveries from this week:

  1. I've been spoiled by dropper bottles
  2. I think I prefer the flatter, more matte finish of Model Color over Game Color
  3. Citadel Base paints are not so much fun to work with, but the results are quite nice when you get it right
  4. Vallejo paints have a very pleasant smell to them
  5. Vallejo inks are not like washes at all...
  6. Airbrushing is fun, but cleaning airbrushes can be a little bit annoying
  7. VGC Dark Green is a horrible, horrible paint that should be avoided at all costs
  8. VGC Gory Red isn't quite as bad, but the way it dries is very...glossy and wet-looking

I'm thinking of trying out a few Reaper paints, but nobody in the UK seems to stock them so it looks like I may have to order from their store in the US instead. I like how they're grouped into triads like the Foundry paints are. Mostly greens, reds and purples, but might throw in a few random colours and a few of the HD paints, too. If anyone has anything they'd like to see tested out, let me know and I'll see if I can accomodate the request. :)

I'm also not a fan of VGC Scarlett red either for similar reasons

Just sent my last email to totalwargamer. All I want is a frigging update. Bank shall be contacted if they do not reply by next week
 
I found myself staring at airbrushes today, I really shouldn't :p Are you just using it for priming/basecoating Joel?

Well in that case I vote Woogie vs JHeaton on Friday!

Yeah, seems some of the colours are just poor. I still prefer the range to the Citadel paints, but I think the majority of my purchases now will likely be Model Color and Model Air.

For the most part, at the moment, yeah. It's amazing how quickly you can cover an entire model with paint, and how smooth and thin a coat you can get. The different segments of armour are still very crisp and well-defined after being primed and basecoated. It did take a while to get used to using the Vallejo Surface Primer, though, because when you get the right amount on to the model it looks excessive and gives the impression that it will fill in all the detail, but when it dries it really tightens around the model and shrinks in to the recesses.

I do plan on getting a little more adventurous with it, though. I want to try some of this so-called "zenithal" highlighting technique, as it looks pretty good when it's finished. I was also watching this BuyPainted video on doing Deathwing Terminators that I think I might follow when I get them built and primed. The end result is pretty nice. :)

I did basecoat one Dark Angel the other day using VMA Camo Olive Green and I love the colour, but the problem is it's so dark that at a distance the model looks black, so I need to find another green that has that rich, deep green colour to it but isn't so dark. I also did some more testing for the Chaos side on some leftover sprue, but realised I'd made a mistake in buying Turn Signal Red - didn't realise it was metallic. The result was, um. Disgusting, to say the least. :p

If you can't tell, I'm really having fun with it. :)
 
I love the speed of painting with the airbrush.

For example I did these a while back (pretty much my first serious attempts with an airbrush), and it took considerably longer to prep them with the masking than to paint them.
Nothing fancy (I hadn't heard of preshading at that point, let alone salt washes* etc)

If I thought I'd use it enough, I'd get a robocraft cutter to do the masking, but I can't justify £200+ for something that would only get used when I paint tanks.
IIRC the cutter I used for the mask for them cost £20ish, and took hours to do, hence the temptation for a robocutter/vinyl cutter.

What I don't like about the airbrush, is cleaning it, it always seems it takes me as long to clean up as it does to spray :(




*Where you apply slightly damp grains of salt between different coats, to give you the impression (once you've finished and cleaned the salt off), or natural "paint chips" (depending on when you apply the salt, you get the chip showing different layers of the paint).
 
Urgh...I kind of hate GW...walked into my local and ended up walking out with 4 new paints (I wanted them, the 4 the guys uses to paint the Tau guns in this issue of WD) 1 other new paint wash and the Witch Hunter dude for Empire...oops...now then...guess I best get painting again...

Cheers, they look a lot better in pictures than the flesh - if I'm honest they didn't get much past that stage (basic colours, no highlights), as I got sick of painting Tau only for them to be annihilated by Orcs in buggies/on bikes without getting more than one shot off :p (they were ok for the first couple of years, but then as their codex got increasingly out of date...)

I'll probably pull them out of their storage box when I'm doing the new stuff and actually finish them, and probably go back and redo my original piranha's and devilfish/hammerhead hulls to match those.

Haha this is why I have not been info my local gw for a while. I always walk out with stuff I didn't want to buy.

I blame the awesome packaging...although Paddy could probably sell me a rotten potato...

I have now 90% finished my first Eldar troop (YES, since all those months ago I posted the Wave serpent!!) Just need to think of a colour to do his cloth sections...

EDIT: If it helps, his helmet is bright orange, armour nice blue, gun and equipment is light grey/white. Base is lava.

GW look at sales figures for a range of models that have not had anything done to them for 8 years, and have a massively out of date codex making them unpopular to play.
GW then start production of the new stuff based on those sales figures, and get stuffed by their silly 7 day in advance announcement policy of silliness when pre-order levels are high because everyone who had old tau wants new models, and a lot of new people are interested in them as well now they're finally getting updated and have some funky new models, and they don't have enough time to increase production before release date..
 
That's another theory, I think mine is more likely though :p Especially as afaik the new 6th edition armies haven't sold to expectations (no idea if this is true or not, hard to find solid sources) then this one magically has high demand. Especially considering GW's current campaign against buying their stuff from anywhere other than GW.
