tablets to replace PCs?

how so  most desktops are no longer than a desk, so to dock your tablet you would still require a desk to put your monitor, keyboard and mouse on. or is there something magic that means these things are tiny and float around so no need for a desk?
Don't combine them, most people won't need a desktop or a dock! Thus saving space and getting portability, those who do can have a dock and works out cheaper overall and you get a tablet as well as a desktop.

At which point it doesn't really become a tablet PC anymore though.
Don't go down this route, just because you can't think of the future. It is still a tablet, it is not a desktop requiring normall desktop stuff.

People are also forgetting that small form factor = compromising on power/performance.

A desktop will always be more powerful than a tablet and there will always be a need for powerful computing.

so you are saying kids will be able to write their homework essays on a tablet in the same time they can with a standard keyboard and mouse? Im really not following your argument for them replacing a desktop, whilst retaining the ease of use a keyboard, mouse and monitor gives.

Which is a tiny portion of societ, computers are so powerful, few people use it.
Ou can chuck out small groups, but that won't change the trend as small groups do not make up the majority.

Seen the keyboard cases, for tablets.
Seem to write essays erfectly fine on laptops. There's no difference,

Yet again more people stuck and don't even know what you can allready buy. Let alone what win8 will allow you to do in October.

Define work? I use my desktop for leisure.

Gaming (FPS)
Photoshop
Music editing
Video editing

None of the above can you do on a tablet.

Or a large spreedsheet or database. Then of course not everyone wants to produce micky mouse documents. I think I'll stop there. :D

yes I have seen, and used one, and sold many. and most have been returned as people just don't get on with it being so small. hence why netbooks are not as popular and notebooks/laptops as they are just too small for long periods of use.

Hi all,

I started my own PC Repairs business in 2008 and everything has gone well since. I've noticed lately that a few of my customers, both new and old, have decided to buy an ipad. I'm worried that one day in the non too distant future that pcs will be replaced by tablets regarding my market audience, which as you can imagine tends to range mostly around middle aged people. I have quite a lot of older customers too and hardly any under 30.

Am I right to be worried? Will ipads and tablets like the nexus make personal laptops and desktop computers a thing of the past for these people?

Simple fact is get out now and retrain or keep the business going while you do so.

Tablets and smart phones will erode your business to next to nothing within 3-4 years. While yes there will still be pc, the vast majority of people using them will know what they are doing anyway. So no business there, and the people you rely on now will migrate to tablets / internet tvs.

Most people just want something to get on-line with they don't play games on the pc, they don't video edit /photo edit. The people doing these tasks generally know what they are doing with pcs anyway, so are not your target audience to start with.

Stick with Windows 7 until a patch to remove Metro arrives or wait for Windows 9 where's it's removed for good?

Dillusional. Metro isn't going anywhere, win9 will only integrate it further and win10 further again.
Win7 is useless for tablets. Win8 is awesome on tablets and desktops. Just a few people hate change. Despite the fact after log on I can hit the desktop button and never see metro again until I log out, however when apps come I'll be using both metro and desktop. Why would I want to go into a website to check if I have any emails, or check weather or anything else. Click metro and I get real time infor on one screen on what ever I want. One screen could tell me 16+ different things.

Ah yes the crappy keyboard cases which you wouldn’t want to spend more than half an hour typing with two fingers. There is a lot of difference in keyboards.

Power users know exactly what there is and what to buy. They also know what Windows 8 will offer and for them Pro will be the only viable way forward.

Horses for courses.

I think tablet usage will increase by a further large margin but I don't think they'd ever replace desktops/laptops completely, at least I'd hope not, typing on a touchscreen is ok for short messages but I find anything much longer than that is a serious pain.

My dad got a tablet a while back and thinks it's great as he's not a particularly demanding computer user, I've used a few different tablets and none have made me at all inclined to get rid of my laptop for them.

.

At work, we have a handful of desktops per building. Everyone has laptops. Docks are on the table. Place laptop on dock and you have keyboard/mouse/screen connected up by simply placing laptop down on a certain place. What's wrong with this?

As I said it's not just tablets you have to worry about it's smartphones, internet tvs.

Internet tv's are going to be a major killer to the pc market more so than tablets.
