tablets to replace PCs?

 and a tablet is solely touchscreen is it.
Good god, think before typing.

no not solely, hence why I said I can use my phone if I need to do something whilst sitting away from a laptop as it is just there and small enough to be portable. but if I am going to dock a tablet to use it properly then why not just have a laptop that is just there  why do I need a phone and a tablet when they are in essence the same thing. a phone and a laptop would cover everything you claim a hybrid does, but easier as a phone is 100% portable, a 12" tablet not so.

no, I have a phone that does that. and as phones support skydrive and the likes, why do I need a tablet?

phone and tablet are not the same, there's one of your biggest mistakes.

smartphone screen is not big enough for comftable use a tablet is. win8 tablet is also a full OS or RT version ist much closer to it than a phone.

You do realise that you may not be a typical pc user don't you? Other people may have different needs from you? What is and isn't suitable for you may or may not be suitable or unsuitable for others?

and all these 10 of millions have sold up all their keyboard based devices and gone solely to touchscreen devices and docking stations?

a laptop I can close the lid, walk into another room, open the lid and I have a 15.6" usable device. with this method I would need to carry the monitor, docking station, keyboard/mouse etc to said room, plug it all in and then use it. that is really portable and practical?

As I said (admittedly in the edit so you may not have seen it:

for when/IF you really need that bigger size...

I'd rather have something tiny that I can make bigger if needed (like docking a laptop to a screen, or docking a tablet to a screen, or docking a phone to a screen) than something massive to start with that I can't take with me (like a desktop).

how? you can get a 5" phone now, and most tablets are what 7"-10" in most peoples price brackets. so that's 2"-5" difference. but when I say say 10-12" is too small coz I like my 15" then that 3"-5" isn't a huge jump

yes I do, but then can they not understand that they might also not be the typical pc user, and maybe not everyone wants docking stations and a 12" device to use whilst walking down the street.

have a  and I cant be bothered.

you cant see why a tablet can have a keyboard, you cant see why a 5" phone is to big for most peoples needs, you cant see the difference between doubling of screen size and a 2" increase, you cant see anything.
That's it im out.
Ill just come back in several years and have a chuckle, just like all the people in the original ipad thread.

5" is too big but 12" isn't I don't follow that logic at all.

we will see in several years time, indeed.

Thank you for the debate all, I've been reading throughout the day and it has been very interesting and informative.

I share the opinion that PCs will not be "outdone" by tablets in the entire sense of the word, but that for a proportion of the market will succumb to the investment of tablets for their satisfaction.

Will be very interested to see if this debate furthers.

Yes as for the average person a tablet will do everything they need to do.

This.

Desktops will also become much simpler, more robust and it will cheaper to buy a new one than pay £40 an hour for some to repair it.

I will just leave this here and let you ponder

Everyone wanted them for Christmas
There was a large rise in the sales of tablet PCs in the last three weeks before Christmas, according to the latest figures from IT market researchers CONTEXT. The sales boosted overall European PC unit sales by six per cent in comparison to a year ago, according to in preliminary figures published today.
CONTEXT CEO and co-founder Jeremy Davies said that tablet PCs overtook desktops as the second best-selling PC category in European channel sales during the last three weeks of trading before Christmas. This averaged 20 per cent unit share of all PCs sold.
“The good news is that, despite a drop of 16 per cent in average selling price of a Tablet PC compared to the same period in 2010, the overall share of revenues accounted for by Tablets hovered around 18 per cent.”
We would say then that keyboardless netbooks had been overpriced and had to drop price to boost sales. Sales figures collected by CONTEXT from all the major IT distributors across Europe reveal that Tablet PC sales grew 293 per cent in the final three weeks of pre-Christmas sales.
This was not to the detriment of traditional notebooks as might have been expected, but more so of desktops and particularly netbook PCs. While netbook pre-Christmas unit sales in Europe declined by 42 per cent compared to the same period a year ago, notebook PC sales grew by three per cent and desktop unit sales fell by 13 per cent.
UK sales of PCs grew strongest, with units up by 21 per cent in the final three weeks of sales before Christmas. Despite tough economic times, sales of PCs in Italy rose by 14 per cent in the pre-Christmas rush. Sales went up by 11per cent in Germany, but fell 8 percent in France. There was some Christmas cheer in Spain as PC sales rose 6 per cent compared to the same period last year.

so laptop sales increased, netbook sales halved and desktops fell by 13%. so in reality my argument of tablets replace netbooks seems true, and people are still opting for laptops over tablets. but heyho.

The thing that scares me most about Tablets becoming more and more popular is that more and more people will post like Glaucus does, often completely random collections of words that don't really make a sentence, all blamed on the fact he's typing on his iPad. Using a tablet isn't hard work but following a debate in which a participant is using a tablet certainly is :p

As he has quite adeptly demonstrated, you can't beat a proper keyboard.

Eh? What's the difference between a netbook and a notebook? They're both words for the same thing aren't they?

netbook are the tiny things without optical drives. notebooks are laptops.

oh, and in this, does it not show that desktops will still have similar sales? and an increase in emerging desktop and portable as well as tablets not exclusively tablets? or are these people all just making stuff up and in fact the tablets will just take over the world?
