Tailgated at the 40 speed limit

I don't think slowly down is dangerous if done very gradually.

On the other hand applying the breaks harshly is a completely different story, and something I'd never do.

I think you missed my point, slowing down gradually is ok when stopping, turning or otherwise, but for the purpuse of ******* people off it's a bad idea. Course slamming on the breaks is a worse idea. :p

Absolutely not, they are generally pretty far off, especially as you get going a bit faster

It doesnt even have to be operational for an MOT I dont think

Very OT: I was wondering about this today actually. Heading up a fairly sharp hill on a country road, the walls/houses/trees outside were moving pretty damn slowly, especially when comparing against the 60 reading on the speedo. :p

I think they had this on top gear or fith gear sometime, where they chekced the speedos on some cars, a ten year old sierra was up to 10mph off but the newer cars were generally very good.

+1. I always assume they are extremely dangerous and never make eye contact with them, and I won't ever stop the car completely. Even though my brain is sending me messages to destroy them, I am able to override this and look to avoid trouble whenever possible. This technique has served me well in life.

... and I am a thoughtful keyboard warrior at heart, mindless violence is not one of my strong points ... ultimately I know that if I was to confront the situation, they would always be prepared to take it one step further than I would, so I always do my best to avoid any flash points and be considerate of other people, even if they are acting in a banal manner ... however, this still isn't good enough for some, hence my post in the first place.

You should play more grand theft auto. :p

It's a topic that's one of my pet peeves and often causes a bit of controversy. Thanks for the post.

I'll admit do doing exactly that :D They were driving a ford Ka though, a crime in itself

Hopefully I'll grow out of it soon :p

daft thing was, at the time i was doing 40 in a 30, so completely no need to be doing anymore.

Half the time i wonder if people do it just to bait me.

A lot of folk tailgate because they don't know any better. I tend to turn my hazzards on. If it's folk who genuinely want past you then I just indicate left and wave them past.

Was out today myself on a long NS60 road. Nice wee road. Got stuck behind a group of 5 cars cruising at 50mph and 40mph around corners :( Problem was they're all tailgating each other so it's not easy to overtake.

Recently my wife was learning to drive, with the help of my old instructor and myself. I can't tell you the number of times we got tailgated in 30 zones, 20 zones next to schools, 40 zones etc. She would drive to the speed indicated for the road and still get bullied but never gave up and went faster than the limit.

Now that she's past (with 0 minors!) she still drives in the same manor as before, always observes the limits, does 60 and 70 where applicable and still gets muppets tailgating.

It does my head in! We were both tought to keep a safe distance to the car in front of you and if someone is tailgating then you need to increase the space between you and the car in front so that if you have to break you can do so and avoid the t*sser in the car installing his engine in your boot. Shame then that sometimes i've actually been driving at 20 mph in a 30 zone to keep a safe distance in front of me to stop because someone behind me doesn't understand how to drive.

I've found it seems to depend what I'm driving rather than how fast I'm going. When I was learning, even sticking to an indicated 30 I got people following too closely. Then moving to a Punto it became a lot rarer. Same in my Astra. Now I've got an MR2 I've had quite a few people just fly up behind me and sit on my bumper, and I've only had it a couple of weeks so far. To make it worse the MR2 speedo is spot on, whereas my old cars 30 indicated was more like 27ish, so I've actually been going slightly faster and getting more people following closely

Also, non fuelhead folks often don't appreciate that running different wheel sizes (more critically, altering the rolling radius) will throw speedo readings out further than factory. Functioning or accurate speedo isn't requisite for MOT.

What is the 'official' thing to do should someone do this to you, that is, what would the police tell you to do if the situation did arise?

As far as I remember - you should do nothing. Carry on as normal, and if you feel unsafe allow them to pass. The general motorist is not an enforcer of laws and shouldn't take it on themselves to "teach a lesson" to other motorists.

Think it was Fifth gear and it was a few years ago. Long enough ago for my Mondeo to be brand new or not even in existence. Yet, after 60mph its quite a bit out and even beforhand its a fair few mph out. On 50mph roadworks sections of motorways where they have average speed cameras, I'll often set the cruise to 50 according to the satnav, which is indicated at 55mph. 80mph on the satnav is about 87 on the speedo

I've been thinking about getting one of those 12V scrolling LED's off the bay for a while and pre-programming it with some choice phrases for the middle lane hoggers and rubber-neckers on the motorway that cause tailbacks. Not sure where it lies in the legality stakes though.

I wouldn't. It would just single you out for abuse. And the police wouldn't take too kindly signs that taunt/offend other motorists.

:D:D

I would probably take the evidence, put into onto a DVD, and then post it anonymously to the local police station, and say please have a word with this person about their driving. ;)

Generally I'm very polite to other people, and try to be tolerant. I don't want to go into detail about this case, but it was extremely aggressive for absolutely no reason, and as I get older I start to feel maybe I should be taking more of a stand ... although I have yet to start ...

Much easier to pull up sharply infront of them & have a bit of road rage... ;)

They lock the doors when I try that tactic though. :( Spoil Sports. :p

I am 6ft, but only between 10.5 and 11st. I have never actually had to throw a punch, no-one has ever punched me. I have never undergone any form of offensive fight training. I find the most effective form of self-preservation is to distance oneself from any threat ... I don't fancy my chances against white van man ... any dust off between Radderfire and white van man is unlikely to happen any time soon ... as a very last resort I would attempt to drive away from any threat, I certainly wouldn't be stopping and opening the window to explain to them the error in their ways ...

Whilst being a bit bigger than you, and a truck driver by trade (lots of incidents to incite tbh) 99 times out of 100 I'd do the same.

Theres always the one time though......

Someone wound me up no end earlier, I was behind them.

They drove along a NSL stretch of road at 40, sped up to 50 to go through a 30 stretch of road, dropped back down to 40 for the next NSL stretch!

It was awfully irritating. Couldn't overtake the bugger either.

I always get this, especially when I am cruising along in the fast lane of the motorway on the phone minding my own business, no one else anywhere to be seen, then some crazed road-hog maniac comes up behind me, and refuses to use the other lanes to my left to go past. They have to sit there and flash before eventually overtaking. It drives me nuts? I have to put my phone down to gesticulate wildly at them to get them to overtake.
Dont these people know how to drive? As soon as they get past, I give them a good blast on the horn and turn on my full beams.
Makes me feel all warm inside knowing that I am right and they are wrong.
