Talk to me about E60's

tbh, the looks kinda grew on me over the 2-3 weeks, and 1500miles I had it. To begin with, I thought it ugly, at the end I was indifferent.

I dont think its ugly it just doesn't make me go 'Whoa!'. Thats important when I'm paying for a car myself. If I had to pick a company car I'd go for an E60 Sport and be happy with it but.. its missing that certain something as a personal purchase, as a pride and joy.

The E60 grew on me on the looks front.

So what sort of budget do you think I should be looking at and what would be the suggested stratergy with regards to replacing it bearing in mind the miles I do?

Oh fair enough. How is the 320d crappy anyway?
slow (yea yea I know), cheap feel, few annoying ergonomic problems, nowhere comparable to a 330d, crappy styling (taste), low rent basically, not exactly better than a mondeo and a lot more expensive! unfortunatley they didnt have something better, I guess a 525d sport will do as a substitute for a 330d sport.

I have a 520d m-sport as a company car and I really think that nothing comes close when I consider the car for the amount it costs in tax.

After taking a test drive I was surprised by the handling and power - I was expecting a lot less from a 4-pot diesel in that size of car and it really exceeded my expectations.

It also looks very good, a mate has a 335i and my car attracts more positive comments from mutual freinds - something that really winds him up :D

Can anyone post some good standard side by side shots of the visibile difference to between the SE and sport?

Also going on my typical usage can anyone give me a ballpark servicing and tyre cost per year?

E60 SE = Dull as something extremely dull.

Sport's are great, get a 525d or better.

I did a thing on servicing costs, posted it and it didnt show. How strange.

Rough servicing costs for a 530d or similar:

18k miles: Oil Service, £150ish
36k miles: Inspection 1, £250-£300
52k miles: Oil Service, £150ish
70k miles: Inspection 2, £250-£300
88k miles: Oil Service, £150ish
106k miles: Inspection 1, £250-£300

Every 2 years: Brake Fluid £100ish
Every 4 years: Coolant £100ish

Tyres will last 15-20k on the back @ £300 a pair for non RFT's.

525d and 530d will protect you best as the 535d's are still holding their value very well but will cost you a lot to own. I think the 530i is a great car too, lovely engine and not bad fuel consumption and can be had nearly new for a solid saving which may outweigh the saving a diesel car would give you. As far as I am concerned their is not a bad 5 series, its levels of excellence really.

I would urge you to drive a 525D and 530D and also a 530i in Sport guise. Options wise I always say the same, buy the bits you need as you virtually NEVER make the money back on the options you spec, but if buying second hand buy the car with the most options for the best price, which is obvious.

More options make the car easier to move on, but if you plan to trade it to a dealer it will be of little relevance other than you may get more for it, but this might be less than you paid to have the options in the first place. Options are an opportunity for dealers to make money. I was told never buy an E46 M3 without Sat Nav, and I bought 2 with out it and didn't loose as much money as those who bought Sat Nav!

Tis a buyers market out there right now, LOADS of solid deals to be done and solid discounts of sticker prices if you push hard enough.

The top car is an SE and the bottom one is an M-sport.

What sort of price range are you looking at spending?

Excellent pics, thanks very much! Bookmarked the link as it looks like it could be useful!

Budget would be sub £20k but I'm not sure where to pitch it as again i do high mileage so I'm not sure at what level to aim it. Do I find the cheapest best car assuming it's taken the steepest part of its depreciation or do I buy higher? Advice sought on this point.

Don't know about you, but I think that looks pretty good. Not a tatty bodged job. I'd drive that... As long as you didn't end up hating it because it wasn't actually an M5...

Dad's looking at these at the moment, we had discounted the 520D but on actually looking properly it's not that bad a "Dad" car at all. Enough performance for him but how refined is that 4-pot derv coming from an audi v6 petrol?

There can be no doubt that the E60 is a more modern looking car than the E39 both inside and out - because it is. The design is a good 7 years newer for a start. But the E39 is a shape I really love and this isnt because I own one, I own one BECAUSE i like the shape. I WANT to like the E60 becuase it's by far the most logical step for me next but I just can't, so I think E92 will be on the agenda. Which is a shame as it offers much poorer value and isn't built as well.

But hey, other than looks, the E60 is the clear choice in this market.

What's the upshot on going LPG?

If I was to go for a petrol and pay for an LPG conversion how does that effect MPG and is £2k about the going rate for the conversion?
