Talking to someone who claims they will kill their-self if

Means testing means refusing someone PIP to secure a bonus. Then having them go through the appeals process to get back on it.

Not good for those who are unable to do this because of their disability.
Means-testing is based on finances and would be administered by the DWP. If means-testing was introduced what makes you think:

a) DWP staff could fudge the figures to deny a claim and
b) get a bonus for doing so?

Having had experience of this sort of thing in the past with someone who also threatened to off themselves multiple times. I can say with 99% certainty, those who say, will never actually do. It's the people who are quiet who are more likely to actually go ahead with it.
Yes that's been my experience of it too sadly.

God forbid anyone disabled and unable to get out of the house easily have access to a bit of entertainment and joy in their lives eh?
Yeah it’s ******* horrible how people see them, they act as if disabled people are unemployed sponges. As if they have a choice.

This money is there to give them some ability to cope, have some kind of life.

If stuff like this is changed you will see a lot more people falling off the sides who don’t deserve it, it already happens now and unacceptable.

People put their best foot forward when they go for their pip assessments, it’s usually one of the few times they leave the house. There’s been many many examples of this in recent years resulting in ****** poorly trained assessors denying their pip.

If the assessment system itself is already **** how does anyone think means testing will go well.

If there’s one group of people we need not attack in this country it’s the disabled, they have no choice in their predicaments.

Some people in this thread are brain dead.

Well, this is where you and I would disagree, but that's fine
my opinion has changed. there does need to be somewhere free from utter idiots who have no idea what they are talking about for a thread like this. while one would hope the moderation team would take an active lead on a thread like this in GD i can imagine it would become a 'full time job' to keep the clowns out.

the Tories means test Personnel Indepence Payments on the 17th of November, as it will rob them of the only thing they have left. He likens the introduction of means testing as an attack on the disabled similar to that of the introduction of the gas chambers to eliminate the jews.

I was quite shocked to hear this as he says he would say goodbye to his grandchildren and wife and then kill himself

From experience yes. Everyone that I know who has killed themselves, never talked about doing it, yet those who do never actually go through with it, its a cry for help.
so it's just anecdotal which is fair enough. but taking a wider viewpoint, you simply cannot say with any degree of certainty that someone who threatens kill themselves will never do it. what about those that make that cry for help and don't actually get any help?
it's a very dangerous mindset, you're basically saying 'don't worry, anyone who threatens to kill themselves won't actually go through with it'......sadly that's completely untrue. while of course there will be those who do cry wolf, so to speak, you can't just dismiss everyone who makes the threat to kill themselves because others haven't followed through with their threat.

... Hope you can talk to him and let some relatives know he's not doing too well if you're not related yourself.
This is the best course of action.

Please try to discuss this topic sensibly, and report any posts you disagree with, rather than derail the thread with discussion of moderation.

I would try to get them to talk to family, citizens advice and helplines / organisations trained to deal with this.

Maybe they have been bottling it up for a long time.

Sadly my neighbour ended his life a couple of weeks ago and he had just come back from holiday with his wife.
They were financially comfortable, owning a detached bungalow and a motorhome.
He tried one way and it failed, then tried a different method straight afterwards.

I'm not saying that at all. If someone is talking about doing it by all means talk to them, point them in the right direction for help with the numerous charities available that provide excellent services.

What I am saying though is that those who actually go ahead with it, more often than not never talk about it, they just do it. There is nothing you can do in those circumstances because by the time you find out, its already over. All you can do is support those who will be affected by it most.

Case in point, the post made by dave28 above, I'd be surprised if anyone was even slightly aware that it was something the neighbour was even remotely considering. Same with the likes of Robin Williams, a hugely successful actor/comedian who was wealthy with a loving family, and out of the blue with no mention of even considering it, he commited suicide.

It's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Some people talk about it [which is their asking for help] and then do it if they don't get the right support.

Some people never talk about it and then do it.

but you are, if even just indirectly or unintentionally.

you're stated opinion is that if someone threatens to kill themselves 99% of the time they don't. don't you see how dangerous a viewpoint that is to take? i knew someone (not a close personal friend but i knew them all the same) who made several of these cry for helps by threatening to kill themselves. eventually they did. but that doesn't mean i'm going to claim that 99% of people who threaten to kill themselves will.
it's far too simplistic and indeed dangerous to say that someone who threatens to kill themselves won't, because if people start to believe that then those people who make those threats are going to be treated like the boy who cried wolf.

exactly, and it would be horrendous if the general opinion became that once someone makes a threat to kill themselves it's 99% certain they won't.
