Always pay your VAT on time. You are literally a collection agent for that, and it's not your money to spend.
I've not needed it, but if required they will give you a bit of grace on corporation tax owed.

Almost anyone else the worst that can happen is you go bankrupt, HMRC will not only very quickly bankrupt you if you mess them about, but can put you in jail if they can show you've done it deliberately.
