Hey,

My girlfriend is 18 and is really self-concious about her teeth. I think they are absolutely fine, but she is obsessive over slight discolouration (due to smoking) and she has slightly crooked, bunched up teeth on the right of her mouth. I have just come into a bit of money, and decided I would treat her to having cosmetic treatment on her teeth. Veneers if needed, and removal/straightening of her teeth on the side.

Anyone any experiences of this? Cost/successfullness?

Cheers!

a) She should stop smoking if it bothers her that much.

b) Do you know what veneers actually involve?

Alright then, from what I am aware (feel free to correct me anyone).

They file down the teeth to stumps and replace them with look alike crowns which fit on the top. I've heard it's pretty expensive too.

Yeah I heard it is expensive. However, money isn't an issue for me at the moment. I live in Maghull, Liverpool and found the Liverpool Dental Spa: www.liverpooldentalspa.co.uk is quite good for stuff like this. Going to phone for a consultation session in the morning.

From that Wiki article - 'Normally a reduction of around 0.5 mm is required for a porcelain veneer on a labial tooth surface'

So not quite that extreme!

Sounds like a good idea tbh.

Might be worth talking to you gf too and seeing if she is actually comfortable with the procedure.

Gavstar, the one I saw on TV of veneers being placed on peoples teeths, they really filed them down - I guess it depends on how bad the teeth are too.

Yeah, I'll give her a ring. The main thing on her mind is: 'OMG woman! Your teeth are all crooked and a disgrace!! You should be ashamed of the state of your teeth!'. I tried to tell her they're professional and YOU are the one paying THEM, without disgraceful teeth they would be out of a job, but she's having none of it! :p

One thing to remember; she is only 18 and probably still very self concious about her image. She'll probably grow out of the huge paranoia in a year or two. It's a lovely gesture you've made, but I think waiting a couple of years first is an idea and if she still feels the same then - do it.

Depends how many she wants done?

Porcelain Veneer is going to cost around £650/tooth and then you have the xray costs, smile design costs and various other things.

Cheaper option would be braces then to have teeth whitening done.

But if you want the holywood smile then your looking at a full set of veneers 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom, but also a fee of between £15k-20k.

Also I would do a lot of research into it before you rush into it. Check how many times the dentist has done this sort of thing and how qualified he/she is.
I had mine done at the http://www.londondentalstudio.co.uk/ and the guy who did mine does 3-5 patients a day and also did some of the Miss World participents.

Anyway up to you but just don't rush into this sort of thing. Ask her what she exactly wants doing and then consult a dentist and see if it's best for her.

My wife used to have a gap in her front teeth that had bothered her from childhood so she decided to finally do something about it. She first had a frenectomy, then she had to wear a brace for about 6 months. This brought the front teeth together but created small gaps elsewhere. She had six teeth fitted with porcelain veneers to fill the gaps and the rest of her teeth bleached to give her a Hollywood smile lol. She went through a lot of pain and it cost around £4500 in total but she thinks it was worth it and she's happy.

Can't you get InvisBraces now? They have the same strength as the metal ones but you can hardly see them. I think Tom Cruise had them?

:o It's a small world, I drive past you twice a day to and from work.
I'm round by ashworth, off moss lane myself.

With regard to the thread though, i don't think i'd get your girlfriend cosmetic treatment, she's young and her feelings will change dramatically as she grow's up i suppose.

Personally if you've come by a bit of money i'd bank most of it, and treat her to a nice weekend out which will be far cheaper. Find a hotel somewhere nice up/down the contry, a bank holiday weekend would have been perfect ;). Treat her to a romantic meal and do some general sight seeing buy her some clothes etc... Much more for your money.

//Edit: Oh and its called Invisalign

b) No, thats why I am asking.

She's 18 and she quit smoking 3 years ago. And she got yellow teeth through smoking? How long did she smoke for and how long does it take to get stained yellow teeth though smoking?

I think that she should start by getting them whitened. It doesnt cost much, and you can see if she is happy at that stage, or if she wants to go further. Personally, the thought of having my teeth ground down or filed makes me ill.

Veneers are expensive. Get them bleached, a friend has done this and it worked well.

The thing with bleaching is you keep the gum sheild - so all you have to do is go online and buy some of the gel and use it a bit more.

The crooked teeth would require work though.........

edit: why not just spend the money on a boob job? More fun for you........
