Tell me about: VW Golf 90 TDi, Mk4

there seems to be an increasing trend towards people with distinctly unspectacular cars running something else as a "daily". i dont get it.

Maybe its so they've got an excuse for driving something pants, I dunno.

'Yea yea I've got a Corsa 1.2 but its a RUNABOUT'

Because yea, other people dont use their only car to 'run about'

The Ti is by no means a typical 'weekend car' obviously, but if other people can manage on that economy and similar wages there isn't any reason I can't... money just seems to dissapear these days :(

And yeah, I pay £1770 on insurance a year. :)

Call me crazy if you like, but this sounds like the most stupid thing in the thread. £1770 insurance on a car worth what, half that?

So, that is either TPFT, in which case, OMG LOL at the price. Or its Comp, in which case, why spend more than the car's value on comprehensive insurance

Sounds to me like that car (or anything mildly performance associated) is beyond your means. Seriously, stop letting your car financially cripple you, get something cheap to maintain/run, and save for something fun.

I was earning about the same when I had my Alfa, which averaged 12mpg (was broken, a bit - think it might have been leaking!)

thats impressive, I have only ever beaten that with the E60 M5 or porsche cayenne turbo around town!

As I say, it was broken I think :)

Was the V6, but even so... the best I managed was 15mpg driving it like a granny and hoofing it got it down to 8. Fairly sure it was a leak of some sort as it performed brilliantly and wasnt running rich.

Anyway - lol at the insurance, you could insure something way more interesting for the same amount.

You've got the dilemma of running the car you like and not having a life, or running a dull car and having the life you want. I had the same decision a while ago when I had the Alfa - I traded it in for a dull car and bought my bachelor pad :)... choose life.

So what is it then? A new Rover?

No, it is an old Rover... so it does fall under the umbrella of "any old Rover"

People forget, its the ti...with TWO HUNDRED horsepower

If you lot had even ever seen a car with that kind of power you wouldnt want to run it every day.

Hence...it's not just any old Rover :)

I was joking, i remember these from when i was first at secondary school (must have been 1995 ish, when were these things around?), they were ok then as company cars etc but 200bhp is hardly something which gets a mention these days, diesel rep-mobiles have more power than that now. Hence why i totally do not see the excitement which for some reason seems to surround what is essentially just a mediocre very old mid size saloon.

If the Rover was worth a bit more money, I might suggest selling it and getting a Golf TDi 150 - they remap to 206bhp (apparently)

Or have you tried easing up on your right foot?

It isn't just any old Rover - it does shift, it's comfy and does what I want... however I rarely use the space.

And yes, the insurance is silly, but at the end of the day it's a comfy car and does what I want, I just feel that with my current situation it's no longer viable to run.

Reading around this evening gives me the same impression as I first had - all owners seem very happy with them and they don't seem to break down much. :)

I must say its an odd idea at best.

Seems like you're living outside your means imho, getting a second car isn't the solution, keeping the rover as a toy isn't the solution, its not an expensive car to run, this is the cost of motoring i'm affraid either like it or lump it.
