Tell me about: VW Golf 90 TDi, Mk4

Bargain mate, I'd take it, it'll be a good daily if you give it a bit of a clean out and fix the panel.
Not the best engine, it won't be nippy, but not underpowered and good economy.

A good daily is something like a Jaguar XF Auto, perhaps something like a Merc C250 CDI. A knackered Golf is not a good daily. Cheap to run, sure. Economical, yup. Suitable for his circumstances, yea, but its hardly a 'good daily' is it? He's driving around in a smashed up bottom of the range Golf.

Is this thread a joke?

Why not buy something like an old omega?

Cheap - Yes
Cheap Parts - Yes
Comfortable - Yes
Reliable - More than your car

Better than a rover - No

An old Omega wouldnt solve any of his issues (ie, economy, reliability), but would be far far better than the 620ti (assuming that he got a V6). So i have to disagree with every single aspect and wonder if rather than the thread being a joke, that perhaps that post is?

Its the 2.0 Turbo, he's going on like its costing supercar money to run or something.

Perhaps, relatively speaking to his available funds, it does.

Which means a complete rethink of the way he does things is probably a better idea than buying another car and paying another £1300 to insure it.

True, we all knew him buying something like this would only end in pain; he went on about his old turbo diesel rover like it was the holy grail of motoring perfection.

An old golf isn't the answer even as a main car, it will cost less in fuel but i bet it costs more to keep on the road.

The golf sounds like a good bet, they are reliable solid cars.

My opinion however is that the rover should be got rid of. Its not a special car in any shape or form which would be fine if it was not causing financial woes. However it is, and its nowhere near special enough to be a bother in someones life. He could then simply run the golf which should prove to be both relatively reliable and economical.

Not really, the mk4 is a good little hatchback, comfy and good for round town or a bit of motorway. Cheap to run (good mpg, low tax band, low ig), reliable, you don't need anything big and automatic for a daily, it's completely unnecassary.

In terms of value for money, in this case, yeah, even if it is a poverty spec it's a good daily.

How is an Omega better than a Ti? They're just as unreliable, and worse on fuel from what I can see.

And I didn't used to harp on about the old derv 400 being the pinnacle of motoring excellence, although without a doubt it was a solid car, but unlike anything else it had it's flaws. But for the money, the cost to run and the way it drove, it was a great little car while I was saving on the cash. :)

Low tax? It's in the same tax band as a 2000 Ferrari F360?

A daily is a car you use every day. A good daily is therefore something really nice you can use every day. A nice big comfortable auto is a perfect daily. A crap Golf diesel is not.

Do not confuse cheap with good/nice - all an old Golf is, is 'cheap'. To help you, here are some further examples:

Golf diesel: Cheap daily
Mercedes E320 CDI Avantgarde: Nice daily

Ryanair flight to Milan: Cheap flight
BA Business Class flight to Milan: Nice flight

McDonalds: Cheap food
Michelin Star restuarant: good food

Not really interested on what is better between 2 old saloons, one of which is not even relevant to the thread. :)

Disagree with you fox about the golf not being a good (note i said good, not nice!) daily for the money. Sure its an awful daily in the scheme of all cars, but seeing as the OP can get a deal on it, and is obviously struggling financially, it makes a lot of sense as it should be a relatively reliable and economical car to run around in - which really is all that matters in this scenario.

In your eyes maybe, but it seems completely pointless to pay to run a big automatic car to get about every day unless you're compensating for something.

A good daily to me is something comfortable, cheap to run but not underpowered and reliable. A big automatic car is just going to destroy your wallet and needlessly waste petrol. The weekend car is something fun and fast, you save on the daily and just get something that does the job, you can spend more on the weekend car.

Ryanair flight = cheap flight, gets you where you wanna go
BA business flight = great if your companys paying for it

Mcdonalds = dog food
Michelin star restaurant = the opposite end of the scale, you wouldn't go there every day, it's an occasional thing.

Shows how different we all are :) For example I value having a nice "daily" very highly, as afterall it is where you sit for 99% of your mileage. I'd go as far as to say that i'd rather not have a weekend car at all rather than have a substandard daily.

And yeah, I pay £1770 on insurance a year. :)

WHAT THE ****

I paid over a grand when I was 17 on my group 12ish car (although had pass plus) and I considered that to be too much. At 20 that is frankly midboggling.

You really do need to start engageing your brain. Driving a tatty old mobile with a few hp is actually costing you the earth.

Now I'm lost for words .
