Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

I was always under the impression that meteors "spawn", as per all other sprites bar falling stars. Does anyone know for certain that meteors fall rather than spawn?

Note that if you have built a single-block bridge (even one composed of wood platforms) in the sky in search of Floating Islands it is possible for a meteorite to land on that bridge and you will end up getting only a small amount of Meteorite. It is suggested to destroy any paths in the sky before smashing a Shadow Orb in order to get a normal amount of Meteorite.
Note also that when it is stated that the Meteorite can land 'somewhere on the surface,' these locations can include both the Floating Islands, along with the Dungeon. Blue be with you if the second one happens.

Well I just purchased this game, I must say it's a little odd but quite fun (in an old fashioned way).

I had to watch a number of video tutorials on youtube because I didn't have a clue what to do at first.

Yeh you get used to that. It makes it more fun somehow :D

Any advice? I've made a few houses and a few shafts, not that deep perhaps 100 tiles at a guess. Should I just keep digging until I find something interesting?

I keep running out of torches.

You can dig to a few thousand feet depth on that game lol. Best bet is try and get as much metal ore as possible (copper, gold and iron) before going further down the mines. The backing tiles change texture the deeper you go. If you see mud with stones in it your about 1000 foot down or so but the enemies start to get quite hard and annoying when your just starting out, so beware!

Well I've been digging for 6 hours and I've not found anything yet, just a few pots and small amount of gold... !

I've literally seen two zombies, three blue blobs and one green blob in that time - doesn't seem like many enemies to me?

Enemies can only spawn outside your screen. Originally the game was fixed at 800x600 which made enemy encounters much more frequent. If you are using 1920x1080 you will rarely see any.

Ok, need a little help here. I've hit a bit of a dead end.

Been playing SP for a while. Started on one big world, now moved to a small one. I've got iron armor (with miners helmet), iron weapons and tools and made the grappling hook last night.

Now what? I've found part of the underground dungeon (flooded) but get killed by the hornets (38dmg per hit :O) and I've created an Suspicious Looking Eye but haven't used it yet.

Anyone got any suggestions of what I *should* be doing next?

TIA!

you can find the sky islands, the dungeon, smash some shadow orbs and fight eater of worlds, find the jungle, keep digging to hell and try mining more ores, go for gold armour, or necro is quite easy if you collect bones and webs. id go on terraria wiki and have a look at some of the gear you can get/make. also download the terraria map viewer if your a bit stuck, it will show you the whole map, where everything is.

I use 2048x1152 (native).

...does that mean I'll rarely ever see enemies? That's rubbish!

I'll go looking for the sky islands, but don't think my gear is good enough for the dungeon, shadow orbs and eater of worlds...?????? I'm getting killed over and over in the jungle!

Where can I find shadow orbs?

Keep running left or right (on the surface, not below ground) until you find weird grey looking grass and unique flying enemies (eater of souls or something) and make your way down one of the many holes in the floor. They are usually very deep though so have a grapling hook before you try it tbh. Also you need to have dynamite with you (50s each from the demonlisionist) to destroy the ebonstone blocks in the way of you and the shadoworbs, but watch out as their blast radius is massive. When you destroy a shadow orb you usually get demonite ore and a blue grade item.

Main aim is to get the best gear you can (iron or gold armour + weapons) and then go to smash a few shadow orbs. If you summon the eater of worlds boss (giant multisegmented worm) and die in one of the pits, don't worry as you can continously fight it even in your house, unlike the eye of cthulu which despawns.

If you manage to kill the worm, you get demonite ore and a piece of the shadow armour + shadow scales. With the ore you can make demonite bars and with the scales + bars you can make weapons and armour, most notably the nightmare pickaxe, which allows you to mine the ebonstone which you currently need to use dynamite on.

Also when you destroy shadoworbs, you can have a meteor land somewhere near it which creates a hole nearby filled with ore that kinda looks like its on fire. Get as much of that as you can and you can start making some truly great items.

Thats a lot of hours though worth of gameplay there :P Enjoy!
