TF2 advice

You played 4k or ColdFusion? I wont mention my clan as its a little egotistic but those 2 clans have players that are pretty damn good at sniping and i'd bet you'd have a hard time getting points against them.

TF2 or CS? Because the only 4k clans I ever heard of were all CS apart from 1 I think Ive seen in TF2 but they sucked.

Id have trouble capping? Why? Are they all Snipers? or do they defend with proper classes? :p

Thanks for the advice re: my laggy connection.

I'm on orange which has been fine up till now. Its a livebox but direct connection. I'll look through what in the background but I'm pretty ruthless to keep my gaming good.

PS _ how do I check my ping?

Well your ping appears next to your name and score on the scoreboard in TF2 and most games, press tab to check it :)

It tells you if you have a good/bad ping but not much else.

If you want more information then open the game console ( enable it from the advanced keyboard settings in options ) and then use net_graph 3

That will show you some more figures which can help in diagnosing your problem :)

TF2 - 4k dont do it often but other top teams sometimes put a sniper on defense on maps that require defense, its not a permenant fixture but its enough to throw off an attack to the point of it failing then switch to another class again.

I press tab and my ping is between 32 and 37. Couldn't open the console to do the net_graph 3. I pressed ` but nothing happened. I think I need this as sometimes its fine and then it stutters or I keep moving or it doesn't respond to fire and I get killed.

Mega annoying!

Sounds like when we used to do scout rushes in CS... Its probably that they get bored when playing noobs and just do it for a laugh.

As for the other guy, like I said, you enable the console from the advanced keyboard settings in options :P A ping of 30-40 is more than reasonable but doesnt guarantee you a smooth gaming experience!

You really just dont get it do you................. how about we have a game sometime, it would be quite a shock for you not playing ED teams :)

I wonder how many "competitive" cvars Valve needs to remove from the game before the eSports crowd gets the message and jumps onto the next bandwagon.

I wonder how long it will take before the general public player will realise that if the game is made more available for competitive play it wont detract from the public game at all, i doubt it would even be noticed in the slightest.

People who hate competition just for the sake of hating it leave me in amazement :\

I don't hate competition, I just happen to believe competitive gaming tends to bring out the worst in people in terms of attitudes - the whole playing to win at any cost, "pwning", smack talk, etc.

What irritates me about TF2 and competitive gamers is the arrogance in the face of overwhelming evidence that the game is pitched to a public server crowd. Valve went out of their way to remove the cvars that enabled people to toggle friendly fire and crits, they didn't just disable/default them to off - they stopped people using them entirely. Despite this there are a number of people who still talk like Valve has "got it wrong", "what Valve needs to do to fix balance for competition", etc like they have a God given right to dictate the path of a game which was never pitched at them in the first place.

As far as balance goes - competitive play and "pick up and play" gaming (pubs) are largely at odds with eachother. I class myself as pretty competitive, and can get annoyed sometimes when I get a random crit rocket in the face, but all things considered I enjoy the total TF2 experience for what it is - a mindless drop-in have fun experience.

eSports fanatics want nothing more than to bottle the game up so they can utterly destroy the morale of everyone who is less skilled than them by continually pummelling them into the dirt, so they never get a single point, etc. They get off on this - and again this is the antithesis of public server play. You can still dominate on a server and be way ahead in points but I think its kinda nice that a newbie can get a lucky shot on you now and again, even if it just makes their day for a short time.

Maybe it's just an attitude thing - I don't have a problem with being killed by someone I consider to be "less skilled" than me, I just play the game and switch it off when I'm done. The eSports crowd are like a cancer to games like TF2.

Seriously i think you have had some bad experiences with a few kids before but your attitude towards competitive gaming stinks out loud. Playing to win through any means necessary may come out in matches but ive not seen ANY of that from the decent teams if any of their members are in a public server. Theres about 10 top notch teams in europe, mine one of them, and you wont find everyone going on the same team "just to rape some noobs", hell i prefer playing against my mates if we're on a public. If we have to be on the same team due to autobalance etc we'll play something useless like an engineer and have a lot smaller impact on the game and everyone elses fun.

I think you should try talking to some of the people you hate for no real reason, or better yet play a few games with them, you'll probably learn a thing or two and maybe lose that chip on your shoulder.

A few good eggs doesn't alter the fact that as a movement competitive gamers tend to suck all of the fun out of any game they try to assimilate. Crits, no friendly fire, etc make TF2 a "fun for all" game imo - I don't begrudge any of it and I've been on the receiving end of random crit rockets as much as I've dished them out to other people.

A thread on the TF2 forum called "The reason that TF2 will never be a successful competitive FPS" is a prime example of this stubborn attitude - some random competitive player talking like Valve have mistakenly left out the competitive crowd, when in actuality it was calculated and intended. People saying "why TF2 will never be successful competitively" is like pointing out how Ridge Racer will never win any realism prizes.

You can reason, but chances are I'll disagree - such are opinions. You're in your famous top EU clan, which you're at pains to point out several times, so presumably all you are centred on is absolute and total domination of the opposition team and total lockdown of capture points - i.e. skill totally prevails, thus no crits, no means other than perfectly timed tactics to breach defences, etc.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, and I used to play competitively in leagues, etc and had many games where my teams tactics were far superior to the others to the extent whereby they couldn't achieve anything. All I'm saying is that TF2 clearly isn't meant to be another of those games, and it's great in a unique way because of that fact.... Valve clearly don't want it to be (hence removing the cvars).

You've got TFTrue etc but you need to realise and resign yourself to the knowledge that competitive gaming in TF2 is a niche effort, not the "intended" playstyle of the game.

If it wasnt designed to find effective defenses on maps such as dustbowl and gravelpit why are there timers which run out to let the defending team win? The game itself is as competitive as you can get, theres no single player, one team will win one team will lose.

My "opinion" if you like, is that TF2 has underlying tones of gameplay that are SPECIFICALLY geared towards high end competition and those of us that enjoy playing against each other want to bring that out to its full potential. TF2 is a great game for matches and if you involved yourself you'd see why, public spam is but a fraction of what the game has the potential for.

Whilst a medic had ubercharge running they could switch to another weapon to pause it from running down, when they switch back to the healing gun it would run down again. This basically let good medics start to uber then if there was no need for more they'd pause it for a bit until needed again, during that time though they are unable to heal anyone and are vulnerable to lose the rest of it.

The real skill was when 2 medics on opposing team were trying to use their ubers as efficiently as possible against each other, it adds another level of skill to a team.
