The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

DavidMarq,

That's a really nice setup you have, I wish I could fit a full size greenhouse in my garden.

Meanwhile, three weeks in the aerogarden and the plants are coming along nicely, the amiga mug is for size reference :) I reckon another two weeks and then I`ll transfer them to soil and the conservatory.

Thanks, I don't actually have a garden as I live in a 1st floor flat, so the greenhouse is located on an allotment near by.

I noticed yesterday that I am starting to get flower buds coming already on my Numex Twilight and Royal Black.

Your plants look nice and healthy and should do well in a conservatory.

Starting to get flower buds on my naga plant now, but the other naga is still stump like and think it is likely it will become a casualty of the winter. The 4 different chilli seeds I had germinating are now sprouting 2nd set of leaves since I put them in them in the perpamajiggy! Think I'm going to start some more of them tmro morning, I've got a few more varieties that I haven't started yet.

Plants are all coming along nicely, the Fuego's leaves seem to be drooping a bit, I don't know if this is normal or not though? Both Fuego plants are doing it, so maybe it's just the way they grow.

Here: (the top set)

The Ring Of Fire plants are all good, however the second Mexiquin plant died the other day which is strange. They must be a difficult one to grow. Don't know whether to germinate some more now or just wait until next year..

Slap some more in, go for it :P#

Oh, and my birds eye leave are doing similar, but curling more towards the end, I wasn't sure if this was normal or not either but it seems to be OK.

Finally got everything unpacked, so planted the seeds today, here's hoping for a better year where I don't kill em. 10 variety planted 3 of each with loads of seeds left for at least one more batch, when they are out of the propergator.

okay, quick update from me...

opened the pot up where i was germinating the seeds this morning not expecting much, but WOW! some sort of root has come out of the seeds!! (6 in total) so anyway, i thought, i'll leave them til later on then plant them in my mini pete-pots. which i have done just now.

basically, i tried getting the root pointing towards the bottom of the pot as best as possible, but one would assume they head south anyway, regardless of orientation? pretty excited now! :D

My Cayenne chillies are growing mega slow :(.

Its probably about time to re-pot them now but i cant see any roots at the sides or bottom of the seed pod.

Decided today to get the other varieties of mine planted as I had a few that weren't in and a half empty propagator! Mine go straight in to compost rather than germinate in tissue or anything first, never had a problem with doing it that way, they don't all shoot but if I sow enough it's normally OK and I sow them shallowly.

Some pics as they speak 1000 words and all that.

Got this one from Wahaca the restaurant, apparently they are Serrano chilis but it's doing well!

Birds eye doing OK

Think this Naga is going to the chilli graveyard! Going brown and not wanting to sprout!

The good Naga :)

In this one, there is the Scotch Bonnet in the square pot some other seedlings now sprouting in to their second leaves, nearly time to take out and the big tray with 5 diff ones in there.

So far plants and seeds wise I have:
Dorset Naga,
Scotch Bonnet,
Birds Eye,
Riots,
Calcuttas,
Thai Mound,
Habanero Chocolate,
Habaneros,
Anaheim,
Cayenne,
Fresno,
Hungarian Hot Wax,
Jalapeno,
Rokita,
Serrano,

Should be some good fun if they all come out well... :D I'll leave this now without going on!

I wouldn't repot just yet. I think it's probably light levels as we're having a load of grey weather at the moment.

That'll be fine, you may need to add some support. Later you can repot and reposition correctly.

thanks for the advice. the chilli's im growing are prairie fire, so im hoping they will be a smallish plant. um, also..i sort of just plonked the seeds in the compost/soil stuff, they wont grow a funny way will they?

lol, the seeds work out their up from their down.

Only thing is when they're larger, if they can't hold their weight due to their depth in the soil then you may have to repot or stake/wire them so they have some support.

awesome, clever little things!

okay, i'll keep an eye on em, got em sitting under the air con at 23c at the moment til they start growing, then im going to transport them to my old girls house and put them in the sun lounge.

All my plants have sprouted, one has even started flowering already!

Two of the plants have some browning at the top from the old cut but they seem ok. I'll keep an eye on them and if it continues down the stem I'll cut the stem and see if they continue to grow but they have leaves and are growing branches.

cool, so you started pretty early then?

i was considering buying a heated propagator today from B&Q, but they wanted 11 quid off me. the standard ones were only 3 quid.

i dont know what im going to do with all the chilli's from my 5 plants :p other than sell them.

Mine are the three Nagas from last year. I cut them back to the main stem and placed them on my bedroom window over winter which meant that they probably got some very cold conditions as the windows are single glazed.

I've got buds on that Naga NickK but no flowers just yet! Shame that the other Naga didn't make it though, it was such a sizable plant.
I've just realised that I ordered some actual plants from Simpsons Seeds a while ago that should arrive soon so I'll have these to add to the collection: Friar's Hat, Joe's Long Cayenne, Lemon Drop, Super Chilli F1, Numex Twilight and Ring of Fire.

Think 21 varieties is enough? Hahaha
