The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Got mine today! Thanks NickK!

I ran out of pot's though :( , so trying to germinate in an old lunch box. Should this work?

Yup, you can use damp paper towls/cotton wool in a lunch box. As long as it's clean from fungus etc and seals to keep the moisture in when it's put in the warmth. That way you don't waste a pot until you know they germinate. I just used those peat pellet things and went from there.

I'd recommend attempting to find a warm place as they seem germinate quicker in the warm (~25-27degC). They can be quite random in how long they take to germinate.

Fingers crossed!

Careful - the soil looks a little too wet. You may need to let them dry out a little. Also just make sure the pot has a whole in the bottom to allow excess water to drain out as chillis don't like to be sat waterlogged (hydro systems periodically bathe the roots before allowing them to dry slightly).

Supposedly Camomile tea solution is good as a natural anti-fungal spray - just mist the outside of the pots.

It is the tannins in tea (which softens the seed casing) that is believed to be behind the success of this method. Any tea will do, but several growers have reported that Chamomile tea is particularly good as the teas anti fungal properties are said to reduce the problem of damping off.

thanks for the advice nick. i'll give the pots a spray after work tonight, and i'll let the soil dry out over the day in the sun. i was thinking of moving them into bigger pots soon anyway, these peat pots are starting to ming a bit..

Thanks for the seeds nick, really appreciate it, is the best way to germinate them, to put them in the airing cuboard win some damp cotton wool? I've got chilli left right and centre but am really excited about the naga's

Mark how old are they mate?

About 6 weeks old. They started really slow due to the total lack of sun a few weeks back but have really picked up in the last week. Also got a cheap 45 watt energy saving grow light that i put them under for few extra hours when the sun goes down. Its made a big difference when compared to the other 6 plants that wont fit under it.

A lot of mine have started to collapse now. The biggest one just flops straight down in any direction.

They have just started to get their 1st real leaves.

They have enough water and i have them under a lamp.

Anyone know what it could be?

How tall are they? I read that if they aren't getting enough sun they will grow tall to reach for light. Mine started to get a bit tall so I put an old case fan on low speed in the light box and it really thickened the stems up, so they could hold themselves up.

I think if they cant hold themselves up then you might need to tie them to a cocktail stick or something.

Yea, it's definitely not a lack of light as i have a lamp about 20cm above them and they and on the window sill.

I think you may be right about being tall and weak. Haven't got a spare fan so i will try the cocktail sticks. They need re potting over the weekend so i will take the opportunity to do it then,

Thanks!

epic weather for most of this week in newcastle :D

been getting full sun on all my plants for around 9 hours a day almost every day :D

my chilli/pepper seedlings are still tiny though, my cucumber plants are growing rapidly though with the leaves pretty much doubling in size overnight :D

Same here :D I have to switch some plants to another window at around 3pm to keep them in the sun though which is a PITA. Usually get sun for about 11 hours a day and then @ 8 when the sun starts to go down I put 4 of them under my lamp for another 5 hours (to ensure i get at least 4 plants that crop).

My Jalaenos I bought the seeds for from B&Q have just started to pop their heads out. I planted quite a few seeds in on pot at what stage should I move them to their own containers?

i just stick mine on a south facing balcony :D still bring them inside at night though so still gotta move them :( dont want to risk leaving them out yet.

ive bought a small tomato greenhouse thing from wilkinsons for £7.99 for when i do start leaving them out :D

4"1 high 3"3 wide 1"8 deep more than big enough for a bunch of chilli/pepper plants

its pretty light though and i fear teh wind would blow it away like a kite so ima weigh it down with some of my weights ^^
