The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Cheers nickk i got your seeds today. Gona stick em in my new greenhouse today. :)

Edit -

Used a mcvitties fig roll container to act as a seedling tray. Yeah for recycling. :) And poped it in the greenhouse middle shelf. Had to have the front unziped and up as humidity was sky high about 90 overnight and 80 bout 10 mins ago. With flap up its about 50.

My seeds are not showing any signs of germination yet Nick, oh well fingers crossed.. my others are coming on nice.

Same here, but they can take up to 6 weeks so there is still hope yet.

Also think some of my chillies may be diseased :(, just going to leave them and see what happens.

Nagas are 'harder' to grow. I use the term harder loosely because it's just that they need warmer/longer germination and then when they do start growing they can be a bit fussy. Fingers crossed, although it can be a bit hit and miss.

Sorry to hear about your plants.

Currently mine are flowering but I think the cold nights on the windowsill are causing them to get a little stressed (I noted a 2degC in the car one morning).

This thread has made me want to grow some chillies!. I will be getting a small plant from the local garden centre as i feel i have missed the boat for planting from seed.

its not really to late some people just started really early, depends on the chilli you want to grow though some germinate within a week some of the hotest ones take a very long time

I do not want to go too big as I don’t want it taking over the garden/conservatory. I think i will be keeping it on a windowsill of my south facing conservatory in a 6" - 8" pot.

Can you recommend a variety? My wife and I eat a lot of chilli but not too hot.

Edit: typo

I've re potted a few more now, my bedroom windowsill has been taken over and I've put two pots into the greenhouse as a test to see how they fair in the current weather. Being a bit further up north everything takes a little longer.

prairie fire chilli plants are a small windowsil plant. i have three :) they are in 9 inch pots now. which are just the right size to keep on the windowsill or dining room table.

this is not my plant by the way

I went over to the local garden crentre today and purchased an apache F1 hybrid for £1.10.

I am thinking about getting some prairie fire chilli seeds to start from scratch.

thats what i did. to germinate i did the following...

i got a baby food container (Avent branding) got two sheets of kitchen roll, which i soaked and wrung out so they were damp. i wet the seeds then put them in between the two pieces of kitchen roll. then put them in the container and closed it. a good place to put the container if you dont have an airing cupboard i found, was my freesat HD box under the TV. it stayed warm all day everyday, so was perfect for keeping the temp good in the container! (just rememeber to put a few drops of water in there half way through the week just to keep it damp)

i think a sky box might be good too. as soon as they germinate (which took around a week!) transplant into some small pots. i used peat pots, which probably wasnt such a good idea, because when they get wet from the water, they grow white fur and mould on the outside. so avoid these if possible.

edit: i just used some miracle grow soil from one of those bags you can get from a garden center. shame they dont have smaller bags, now im stuck with a load of peat lol.

I have just got a bag of compost out of the shed.. It looks like a mouse has made a nest in there. There are bits of garden twine, cardboard etc in a ball shape in the compost.

I caught the mice the other week (they wont be back :p ), is the compost still ok to use if i take the nest out do you think ?

not a clue mate, ive never had mice nesting in my compost before :D throw it out and buy a new bag just to be sure, there will probably be mice urine/faeces in there. the bags are only like 5 quid.
