The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

I am pretty sure i remember this being asked ages ago, but i can't seem to find the post, and the time has come for me to ask the question.

New leaves are starting to try to grow out the stem half way down where the older leaves grew from (if you get what i mean).
Should i pull these off to stop the extra leaves growing, as i can see the flower buds starting the form at the top? As i heard that this can help the flowers grow as it stops the plant using up extra energy growing those bottom leaves?

Thanks.

I asked this a few pages back and it seems you should leave them on. My mate told me you're supposed to remove them, but he used to grow tomato plants and they might be different.

Ive left mine on anyway.

Some flower buds on mine are falling off, is this normal? They flower, then turn yellow and fall off.

Yup. A plant will produce buds and when it's got enough light/heat/nutrients/water/leaves/maturity then the plant will keep hold of them.. until then it will drop them and very annoying it is too.

It's still probably a little too cold at nights.

quick question. my chilli plants seem to be growing wider, rather than taller, is there anyway i can get them to grow a bit more height? i was thinking of cutting off a few leaves so its puts some more energy into growing up rather than out. i think ive been giving them a bit too much sun on the earlier stages of growth and they've spread out. im not sure what to do, any help? cheers

You could tie them so that they grow upward and trim the branches that don't want to to behave.

have you been feeding it with nitrogen rich plant food every time you watered? i dont understand why it would grow like that.

i dont think cutting leaves is going to do anything but harm the plant

no, ive just been giving them a splash of water in the morning, and then after a day of sun, a little drink before bed.

the soil i have them growing in is miracle grow stuff. maybe that has made them grow like that? thing is.. i've given my parents one of my plants, and that one seems less bushy, and has quite a bit more height on it.

i dont know whats going on with them.

doubt its the soil as its probably slow release fertiliser so wouldnt be giving it to much nitrogen which encourages foilage.

maybe your watering it to much but i dont know if over watering would cause so much leaves and barely any vertical growth.

what chilli type is it? do the pics of the same type on google look anywhere near as bushy as yours?

i dont really know what you could do to make it grow upwords even giving it barely any light for a day or two probably wouldnt do much at this stage.

btw your not using artifical lights are you? plants need a good 6+ hours of darkness

nope, not using any artificial lighting. it does get a good 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. and then complete darkness at night.

maybe its just the breed of plant. i hope!

Pretty sure it's supposed to grow like that, just depends on the type of plant really.

Edit - there you go, that picture shows it's a busy variety. ^
