The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

So are you saying that you shouldnt start plucking flower bud off as the plant will drop the flower if it deems it nessessary?

I dont know If i can bring myself to start plucking off flower buds, just incase it doesnt produce any more and I end up with no chillies .

I just left them to it in the past - however given my stunning degree of not-success may prove I'm not an expert in such matters!

From my experience - the problem is that chilli plants only sprout flower buds from specific locations, when those flowers drop, it doesn't reflower from those locations again.

Thanks, i think i'll just leave them then. Or i might try taking a few off of one plant to see what happens. I have 8 plants, which is far too many anyway.

Chillies are out in the garden now, hope the hot weather keeps up

I hope so too, but looking on the BBC weather site it looks like it'll be getting a fair bit cooler next week with the possibility of some rain. Then again you can never trust for forecasts, it seems to change every time i refresh it.

Does anyone know of any Chilli festivals/events coming up in the south east this year? I heard there was 1 in Brighton but I think I missed it :(

Can chili plants get too hot?.

I have most of my plants outside doing well but a couple wilt quite a lot under the sun. Are they getting too hot or is in something else. Its just the jalapenos that are having this trouble so far.

Mines have done the same.

I had some on the window cill on saturday. and we were getting temps of 25c according to the reports. i went in at night and they all looked very sad. a bit watering and they were fine

Got 9 seedlings that have germinated nicely and are up to 4 leaves, guessing I'm not too far off transplanting them into their own bigger pots.

Forgive me for not reading through 22 pages, but what sort of size pot should I be looking at for each plant? 3 litres?

its because they arent used to the strong sunlight if will harm the leaves if they are left wilting for to long you will have to move them into the shade until they perk up and keep doing this until they can handle the strong sunlight.

the roots cant take up enough water to keep up with the evaporation and the leaves are all thin because in regular daylight in your house thats all they needed.

they will adapt by growing a better root system and the new leaves will be made thicker so they can handle the new conditions

btw never give them a spray with water to perk them if they are going to be in direct sunlight because it will scald the leaves as it evaporates

Bleeding branch snapped off mine with 6 chillis on while I had the window open over the weekend. Meant I had to have them while green but they were still very nice. Had them on a spag bol, because anything with fresh home grown chillis is immense! :D

I have a lot flowering now though, all go here! My scotch bonnets are looking great but theyre a really light green. They will change I assume? My first scotch bonnets ya see!

Got my first flower with actual pollen today.. so I got the peg out :D

@quicklink - yup they'll change but they may remain green for a while and then suddenly hour-by-hour they change colour..

Got this as well, wilting in the garden because of the heat. They perk up once the sun goes and they've had a bit of water. I guess they just need to get used to it.

if you keep leaving them out and they havent been hardened off the leaves will start to get yellow tips , yellow edges and yellow around some of the veins which may cause them to curl up and fall off if its to severe

Should I be taking the lower leaves off from the chilli plants? or is it best just to leave well alone?

im sure this has been asked before but should i be using my chilli focus on the seedlings or is it best to wait until they start flowering? The Chilli Focus website says to use on seedlings once a week...

I would wait until they are flowering/fruiting. Seedlings can't cope with the strength, nor should they need additional feed if they have been placed in fresh compost.
I'd wait until flowering.

Grrr! Temps are back into single figures at night, 5oc tonight according to BBC weather. Will my chillies be ok outside in these temps? I've brought them all in tonight as i could see my breath so didn't want to chance it. But its going to be a real PITA carting all these pots about.
