The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Grrr! Temps are back into single figures at night, 5oc tonight according to BBC weather. Will my chillies be ok outside in these temps? I've brought them all in tonight as i could see my breath so didn't want to chance it. But its going to be a real PITA carting all these pots about.

under 10c is probably going to make them drop leaves

Cheers. I'll keep them inside for a while then, until it warms up again. Looks like it could be a bit warmer by Monday.

i've been away for a week and a bit, on holiday and came back to my plants sprouting what looks like some sort of bud. can anyone confirm what this might be? maybe my first chilli coming through? it looks odd.

bud = flowers, however only when they mature enough to be fertilised do flowers=chillis.

Often cold weather, lack of nutrients, water and light etc may cause the plant to drop the flower.

a flower on 2 of my chillis looks almost ready to open :D

i guess if it were going to drop it would have done so by now? its had the bud growing for around a week.

my wife doesnt have much faith in me beeing able to grow stuff so i can stuff it in her face as soon as a small chilli starts to grow :D

i did mine when it was around your size and it doesnt seem to have done any harm its still growing as fast as it was.

dont over do it though and dont feed with every watering

Wohoo! first flower. There are also roughly 1 million buds per plant as well, so should hopefully have more chillies then I know what to do with in a month or two :D. That's provided they don't all fall off due to the plant thinking its winter.

Update on my chillies. The early flowers fell off, as expected, and then within a couple of weeks, they stuck (I self-germinated them all as often as possible) and the first chillies are now swelling up. However, the recent colder snap has seen the latest flowers start to fall too. It could be a late harvest this year.

I've topped out all the plants now - their just a little over 2 feet tall.

when should I transfer them to a small pot? do they need feeding yet? should i be expecting fruit this year?

Some jalapenos:

Dont seem to have many leaves. do they need a bigger pot?

Some Apache's

Have plenty of leaves, had to spray them because of green fly, I think this one needs a bigger pot as the leaves around the bottom are starting to get a bit manky, should I give it a prune as well?

cheers

So I'm supposed to be growing peppers, but they look suspiciously like chillies, they're long thin, curled up at the ends and green.

Do peppers grow obviously like peppers or do they look like chillies first?

This is Dave my Apache, first flower opened today. Do I need to self pollinate? If so whats the best way to go about this?

I've got about 14 chillis on my 20 plants now, with a couple reaching about 3" in length. I have around 30 open flowers and a lot of buds ready to open. I've only had 1 dropped flower so far and all the rest have grown in to chillis. The problem is I have 5 varieties with no labels so have no clue what is what.

Got my first flower today on my Cayenne. What do I do now? Do I wait until the other flowers come out and self germinate?

Also, is anyone else getting loads of little black flies around their plants? Not on the actual plant itself, but they seem to like the soil (i guess the moisture) - got them on other indoor plants too. They are very irritating. Any idea how to get rid?

They could be a number of species unfortunately. Will be interesting to seem them later once they've ripened and you've tasted them.

There are some Peppers that looks just like chillies. Sweet red peppers I think they were called, got them from Tesco a while back. They just tasted like normal Bell peppers but were chilli shaped.
