The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

But think of the children... the seeds I'll dry and keep for next year in case the parent plant doesn't make it through the winter.

Got more than the one chilli of the plant, yeah?

I want lots of seeds :p If the winter was anything like last year they'll need it!

Besides.. 2011 thread may see some of those go to new homes.

This weekend is going to see a large amount of chilli preparation as I didn't get to it last weekend.

So as we're getting towards the end of the season, how many people managed to get fruit from their chilli plants?

Sadly, not really. Just checked them all again and while I have got lots of very little fruits none of them seem to be growing really. None of my Jalapenos seem to be fruiting. All of a sudden my bell peppers have burst into life and do seem to be growing but they are still quite small. I still have quite a few flowers on my plants so not sure if that is "normal" or not? My little Demon Reds keep threating to fruit but, again, not a lot going on there

This was my first year of growing and I always said I would use it as a learning curve. Not sure what I have learned though!!! Would you guys who aer more experienced say that the poor summer weather will have contributed to them not really doing that well? Either way I will make sure I jump on next year's thread (if there is one) a lot earlier so I can get some tips and hints :)

my jalapenos stopped flowering but now i picked all the chillies off its starting to show buds again.
one scotch bonnet is finished and ive used all the chillis from it(which were delicious), so im waiting to see if it lives/dies/whatever. and another scotch bonnet is just about to finish growing 10 chillies and then ripen them.
ive saved seeds of the jalapeno and scotch bonnet and i will grow more scotch bonnet next year :D

if i trim back the finished scotch bonnets will they put out new growth and flower again before winter? the sunlight hits the window better now so they should grow okay, but maybe be too cold at night ?

Ive use over 40 or so Cayennes now and still got loads ripening :).

They were a bit boring though, so going to grow less next year and maybe get a scotch bonnet and hope this naga survives the winter.

Not going to bother with tomatoes again, over 100 tomatoes on the plants at the beginning of June, which were all the same size and still green at the beginning of August . All down to crappy weather, so there's just no point in trying again.

About 18 Cayennes from 4 plants and 1 Naga from the only plant that survived from the 4 seeds you sent Nick, its still got a lot of flowers on it though.

When is everyone planting seeds for next year? as i was a late starter this year, gonna try and keep the plants i have over winter. Any tips?

Thanks
Jay

My scotch is doing supremely well! Its got 15 chillies at a size where there is no petals, some full grown and at least 30 pollinated flowers where you can see a chilli.

The largest has been there perhaps 3 weeks and is starting to turn white at top (overall a green color) i assume it will go from white to red and be ready in a couple weeks?

So my Bird's Eye was just starting to flower when it got infested with aphids, which also infested my Anaheim which has been fruiting for a month.

Pest spray would cost more than buying the chillis I have harvested from a store, so I haven't bothered to try and save them, and have planted them outside to see how they will fair without the safety of an indoor windowsill, mwahahaha!

I've got 4 plump Thai Chillis ready to turn red any day now, and the other 2 plants are just about to fruit. The plant I left outside to rack and ruin is doing brilliantly, it's got 10+ flowers on it and 3 chillis growing.

It's starting to get pretty cold down here of an evening though, so I'm not sure how much more they'll take. May have to start bringing them indoors, the Mrs is gonna love that. :D

I got nothing from either of my two Scotch Bonnet plants :(

Chucked them in a tomato grow bag outside with the tomms...tomms have done very well incidentally, but still need to ripen!

A few sunny days and some more pods are ripe.
