*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Had a nice-ish chest session yesterday, managed to squeeze out 10x100kg on bench, which is a PB (most I had managed before was 8). Got up, felt good, felt strong, took a moment to appreciate it. Then someone else came along, asked if I was finished, to which I proudly announced I am, and offered to take the weights off before moving on, to which he declined and then proceeded to warm up with 100kg :/ Later on I spotted him for 8x140kg and 4x160kg... my proud moment - long forgotten :( :p

Nice one mate!

10x100 is very very good. :)

I've had that done to me before - it does deflate you somewhat!

@FreeFaller - you weren't kidding when you said to up your calorie intake on GVT style training! Holy cow!

I'm fighting off some bugs at the moment (havent been ill in several months.. now all of a sudden i'm fighting lurgies :/) which isn't making the training any easier.. but even without that i think i'd be dead. Lethargic all day round now, with serious DOMs lasting 2-3 days after the session! Crazy volume that my body is not used to handling!

Rough that you're ill! :(

GVT is mad for calorie intake, pain, and exhaustion. It's not for the faint hearted and it ain't easy! But I'm glad you're sticking to it - it's not going to get much easier though!

Yup it is tough. Depletes you of a lot of vitamins and minerals too. Hence why it's important to eat well and the right amounts. :) That's why I'd only really recommend it to people who have the training experience and nutritional knowledge to do it - not that ergo didn't, I think it's just bad luck in his case. It's harder work than you realise!

Isn't 3 times a week just a bit, excessive?

Nope - if done in the right volume/circumstances. It's a great way of boosting muscle development for the whole body.

Clearly, doing high volume on legs 3x week would be too much. But doing 3x8 for 3 sessions a week would be more than fine, and actually a very good way of developing strength and size.

I'd split it maybe like this: Monday, Thursday, Sunday,Wednesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Friday, back to Monday.

Do a full body split like that for 2 months, it'll hurt like hell, but damn it will help. I wouldn't sustain it for week upon week, but for a good 2 month cycle it'll work well. :)

Looking for a bit of advice.

I have a weight set. Bench, barbell, dumbells and have had that for the past 5 years. And this past year have gone serious into training. Im looking into strength building and power lifting. The problem, I have is the total weights I have only go up to 90lbs.

I was wondering if I could get all your opinion on a nice new set of weight to buy?

Benny's just bought some stuff, I'm not very clued up on home kits I'm afraid, as I don't have the opportunity.

I'd suggest a rack (to enable squatting), an olympic barbell (20kg) and Initially maybe 150kg of weights.

With that there wouldn't be much you couldn't do. :)

Advice needed: :)

Been working out again seriously, after 2 year break (wrist and hand injury mainly), since Jan 2010. Have done 3 Months of Strength training and then 3 months of GVT (both pretty much killed me).

Bench 110kg (stalling, wrist kills after these)
Squat: 150kg (can do more)
Deads: 150kg (can do more)

All done on Smiths machine :( so cannot go higher at the minute, no gloves no belt etc

I currently weigh in at ~100KG and I am roughly 6 foot tall. My body fat is terrible though, around 20% mainly on my beer gut :)

I am therefore going to enter a stage of 'cutting' but I cannot seem to decide upon a routine (split/all body) that I like. Can anyone point me in the right direction, please?

I am upping my CV/HIIT as its preseason footy for me so that will help.

Cheers

Firstly, any chance of you not using a smith and starting to do those exercises on free weights? Secondly, you shouldn't need a belt or gloves. :)

If you want to "cut", first you need to address you diet first and foremost. What's it like? What do you eat?

Once you've got your diet sorted a 3 week full body split with some HIIT on days off will work a charm. With of course a rest day thrown in for good measure.

Ditto. It's quite flattering when I get emails from members thanking me for "showing them the light". I don't do it for thanks or for reward - I just really like seeing people progressing and improving their health and lifestyles.

That looks like a top Gym. :)

It is. :)

The owner, Chris, used to compete back in the 80s, really knows his stuff.

It's changed a lot over the years, but the equipment is fantastic. :)

Duncan, I can completely understand you wanting to train near work. I don't have that option so train on my way back home, and this is ideal.
