The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Not sure maybe apache, the chillies look like em and they have similar leaves.

Btw is start of feb a good time to start seeds off?

It looks like a birds eye plant to me. If the stem is looking green, keep hold of the plant at least until spring, it might pick up again :) No idea how long it should live, though!

My Cayenne and Bell pepper plants all have no leaves, but they have started to sprout flower buds and a few flowers. WTF? Should I remove the flower buds as I very much doubt any chillies will be growing this early in the year and with no leaves.

The only plant that kept most of its leaves was the Naga, strangely enough.

I grew either a dozen or 16 plants last year. I'm going to start some Jalepenos and maybe Choc Habenero this weekend, but only really want one of each plant! It was a bit unmanagable last time, both with the space they took up and then having a crazy amount of chillis all harvested in one go!

Edit: Just mentioned this to the parents who said they've got a chilli growing kit. Add that to the list :D

My over-wintered plants started flowering too, I've since picked them off to encourage more growth.

I noticed yesterday some of my seeds have begun to germinate, so I have Cherry Bomb, Twilight and also Nick's Naga plants on the way. I checked again today and they're shooting up! (Sorry! :D)

Thanks- yes the stem is green but is starting to resemble a 'stick' in places... esp. the bottom 3 inches or so. The rest is still very green on the whole, and if I scratch the stem where it is brown and stick-like, the 'flesh' of the branches is still very green, indicating it is still alive.

Wikipedia reckons it's a perennial, so there should be some life in her yet... I have moved her to the warmest part of the house and will give a tomato food- based feed later.

Rather than constantly giving it tomato feed to replenish nutrients, you could also try repotting it in fresh soil, whilst there aren't so many leaves. The stems on my over-wintered plants have also gone quite woody at the bottom, I wouldn't worry about it :)

I have a chilly plant that hopefully has overwintered ok, how can I get it come back to life as it were, should I be giving it a nice bit of water, tomato feed etc?

Planted my Jalapenos, Cayennes and Scotch Bonnets yesterday night.
All labeled up and ready to go.

First shot at growing Chillies so fingers crossed!

More details needed on that growth box.

What lights are you using?
Special grow lights, I have heard florescent lights are better due to lower heat in a more or less closed box.

Also what height does a full size chilli plant get, I've I converted a full size wardrobe, would it fit two layers in and could they grow to full height?

if you want an easy solution get something like

blue spectrum for vegging is 6400k (sad bulbs)
red specrum for flowering is 2700k (regular household CFLS)

if you just want propergation , seedling light grab a flouresent tube from wilkos , 60watt smalish ones are under 10quid

problem if you need CFL/flouresent tube lighting to be a few inchs from the plant at most because any further and most the useful light is lost

It looks like some of the Scotch bonnet seeds Enzo sent me are starting to germinate :D. Only been 2 days though, so could be mistaken, but one or two have swelled and I can see what looks like the beginning of a shoot.

I've got them ontop of my Hifi, inside a padded envelope with some t-shirts and stuff on top to keep it insulated. Its currently around 30oc, which is perfect.

Ordered some seeds today hope the ones from last year will be ok again this year looking ok at the moment

Got my jalepenos and cayennes into the seedling tray. I think I needed some better compost maybe :(

how much light do you need been looking around and you can get 600w dual spectrum sunmaster
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/600w-HPS-SUNM...arden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item4aa806aa06

and a reflector with fitting for around £20. For your average wardrobe say

900mm wide 550mm depth and 1800mm heigh. Could you split that into an upper and lower chamber fitted with mylar all over. Would one bulb be more than enough for each chamber, would two be better? or one of each colour? how tall is your average chilli and how high above the plant would you need to hang such a bulb?

the bulb is only 20 quid but they also get very hot , they require a ballast to power the bulb these are expensive and also get very hot.
the cheap ballasts have a habit of catching fire.
one of those bulbs would be good for a small room though they are like portable suns and they dont need to be close to plants like CFL's and other floursent lighting, probably cost a lot to run and you might end up with the police raiding your house if you dont have good insulation and there helicopter cameras picks up the heat signature

many people use use metal halide lamps have an automatic fire extinguisher mounted on the wall.

if you want some good advice about lighting or building a grow box just goto one of the cannabis growing forums and see what other people are doing

they will be more clued up than people on regular gardening websites and chilli growing forums

i think a lot of people use strip lighting instead of CFL like T5 2ft tubes

Are there any grow lights which are like a desk lamp?
Do the bulbs have the regular screw fittings like a normal desk lamp?

Would be cool if i could just use a powerful desk lamp too.

I would like one to sit on the top of my drawers and be able to adjust the height as they grow.

Does anyone know of any good little light setups to get or that would be willing to email and talk about how to get one made up?

Ok, that's a HPS bulb not a CFL bulb. You'll need a ballast and a load of space + ventilation..
If you look at my original thread you'll see a 400W HPS bulb (well a Halide which is blue). You'll need about 4 foot above the top of the plant with a 400W.. They give off much more light and a 600W is way way way too much for the size of cupboard you're planning.
Also with HPS you'll want to ensure it's not in a moist atmosphere - the bulb itself gets extremely hot. In a closed environment the plants will get extremely hot too.

yep scrapped that idea.

looking around it does appear some people use t5 strip lighting, but can only see bulbs at 30w although could easily make a 6 or even 8 bulb system. Had any experience or thoughts on that? Assuming would need a lowering and highering system as these would need to be close to plant?
