The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

I bought the gf an Aerogarden for her Birthday, have kept my chili plants right next to it so they can steal the light, seems to be working quite well.
Obviously not growing at the same rate as the plants in the aerogarden, but growing quicker than the last plant.

Just bog standard cayenne from a supermarket seed pack, but they will do the job. Just need them to spice up sauces, etc...

Got some Jalapenos on the go right now. Got them sat on my windowsill.

First time growing chilies so hopefully i'll have luck!

Well they're not looking great for 5-6 weeks. You've got to make some changes to get them growing quickly, or else they're gonna die.

Are you using any artificial lights or just natural? What kind of compost have you used? Have they gotten really cold at some point?

Natural light on a sunny windowsill, compost I use is "Miracle grow potting mix", it's an office so day time is over 20C, night time probably not much below it.

Was in focus today they have a mini greenhouse on sale. Was thinking about grabbing it and some 13cm pots for my chillis. I was thinking once they get a bit bigger and its a tad warmer move them into that. Was thinking about what else I can try growing think I might try tomatoes.

no comments? :(

You could get a bag of perlite and mix that in with some fresh compost and repot them. I have always used it to grow mine on Nickk's advice and have had great results. Could be one of the reason yours are growing slowly.

But also, I think the weather this time of year just isn't light enough to get the slower growing varieties going. But when the better weather comes, at least yours will have a nice head start. Just try and get them on the brightest window and make sure to keep the soil slightly moist.

Its pretty sunny where I am today so I have mine on a windowsill instead of the grow light.

^ might give that a go, with regards to perlite, I've never understood the 2:2:1 ratio thing, what does that actually mean?

Hmm not sure, I usually put about 4 handfuls of soil in a bucket and then mix in a handful of perlite and a handful of vermiculite and mix it all up.

I have just used perlite on a few plants and there was no difference at all, so i guess vermiculite isn't really needed.

Gonna give this ago, never grown anything, and got told

Jalapeno/Cayenne and maybe black Hungarians would be a good start?

Cheers

I grew Cayenne's last year and they fruited very well. I also grew Apache F1 chillies and they were good too. I believe Jalapeno's are very easy to grow, but never tried them myself. This week I'm going to be planting the following: chocolate habs, some orange habs, tabasco, red and yellow scotch bonnets, some demon red chillies, ring of fire chillies, and finally, some awesome new looking ones called numex twilight chillies which fruit in a rainbow of colours. Hopefully I'll get a good yield this year. I'm also going to have a go at building a growbox this weekend :)

Those Numex Twilight chillies looks pretty cool. The plants on Google images look like Christmas trees!

Had my 3rd Cayenne appear last night. Put all three in the window before I went to work. Looks like they will be getting plenty of sun today going on what I can see out of the office window.

tbh I never used perlite myself, however yours look bit overwatered (or at least the soil looks like it) also bear in mind that you are using only natural light which will not give you as good growth rate as artificial. also I have seen with mine that some of the seeds took 8 weeks to show some leaves. I would wait and see btw what I did was wrap them in cling film until they germinate. when they are in cling film you don't need to water them very often usually once a week.
