The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

If its trying to do buds/flowers then its best not to.

Otherwise yeah try it on one and see how it goes.

This is how one guy does it. At about 7min in mark.

Some plants are small and bushy tho like apache. So i wouldn't prune them small ones that dont go much past 1 foot. Nagas probably would benefit from it if you wanted to try on large plants.

that guy seems like a noob side shoots are the last things you want on a tomato plant because they dont yield many tomatoes... they are called "suckers" and you are suposed to pinch them off so they dont "suck" energy from the resrt of the plant.

Yes for tom plants and some other plants. Some chillis seem to work some dont. I did mention dwarf ones probs wont work to the other poster and is meant for the larger plants.

Very informative. Plus, he seemed like he knew exactly what he was talking about. Since this is my first attempt to grow any plant EVER, chopping off 50% of the plant is very... very daunting!! Thanks though, he explains it clearly!

Yeah Ray, who is in the vid, has been doing it for years and knows it works. I wouldnt have posted a vid of his if i thought it was bogus.

Hmm, i'm not so sure. It even says on the packets of seed to remove the "suckers". then remove the growing tip once there are 3 to 4 trusses set.

because u dont top tomato plants unless you are clueless and think randomly topping every type of plant increases yield when it doesnt.

you dont want a bushy tomato plant and the side shoots on tomato planjts arent called "suckers" for nothing they suck energy away from the main trusses that grow on the main stem these main trusses grow loads more tomatoes than the mini trusses on the side shoots.

you also dont plant more than one plant in the same pot because one plant always becomes dominant and establishes a better root system and the other plant suffers because of it.

a single tomato plant needs atleast a full 10litre pot..

btw you top tomato plant after 4-6 trusses so the plant will concentrate on those trusses and you pinch the side shoots for the same reason, tomato plant trusses can grow huge usually you get like 10 tomatoes and then the rust forms some leafs and starts growing again.

i think my tomato plant is already doing this ill go check

heres 2 pics of trusses on my tomato plant

this is why you dont want to top a tomato plant and grow loads of side shoots you will get tiny crappy trusses with crappy smaller tomatoes.

if you honeslty want small tomatoes grow something like a million variety.

i dont think the guy in that vid is all that knowledgable tbh he seems to be taking random stuff hes learned growing random things and assuming every type of plant grows better like that.

some varieties of chillis may respond well to topping others might not if you really want to top a chilli plant do it as a test on 1-2 plants dont top everyone you have or you may find yourself disapointed

I dont think its right you blatantly **** off people who dont think the way you do calling ppl noob and clueless.

The most common way is to grow up and straight which most of us do. But the guy in the vid which has done it for years if you care to go through his vids shows he knows what he is talkin about. He doesnt agree with suckers and stuff. He likes to bush out his tom plants and has done so well. So hey if he can do it and it works for him them leave him to it and you do it your way. Infact let ppl do it their own way. Im sure everyone here is smart enough to know what to do and what not to do and hey if someone has a lot of tom plants or whatever and wana try somit new let them, its their plants at the end of the day.

So if you can dont **** ppl off and making them think your way is the only way. Everyone has their system. We are here to share our gardening experiences with others to learn off one another.

Suckers dont drain all the energy they are new growth stems which will do fruit. You dont have to have massive ones as you can cut them to certain lengths just like you can with the main stem when you want indeterminate plants a certain height.

they compete for nutrients with the main stem which is why they are called suckers go and do some reaseach like the guy in that video should before he throws around his "expert opinions" as fact.

Suckers is just a term for side shoots. They grow new parts new main stems. They dont compete as the side shoots have their own leaves which generate food for the new main stems (side shoots) so dont take nothing away. Their are 2 sides to the discussion that is widely spread about suckers (side shoots) and weather they really are worth taking off or not and to the benefits or not.

It seems you just googled suckers and read the first page. Try to learn about the other discussion about them before you make bold claims.

He has tried and tested his method it works their is no discussion as to weather or not it works or not. Try it yourself or not its up to you but he shows a way to try a new approach. Don't condemn it because you haven't tried it.

He aint a expert he is a farmer in the US hes done it so know it works. Can you say the same and prove him wrong?

Anyhow thats all i have to say on the matter. If ppl wana try the normal or other ways its up to them its their plants. I just dont like it when ppl go around criticising something they haven't actually tried.

you top if you want a bush, you dont top if you want it to grow tall, quite simple really.
i trimmed back my over wintered scotch bonnets and they are now bushes with 20+ chillis instead of 10.

my scotch bonnets are nearly ripe, they are turninig from light green to a darker shade and it should be maybe 2-3 weeks before they go red :D

Replanted my peppers today. If they all take to my replanting then I am going to end up with a lot of plants!
Some are single plants, other have maybe one in each corner, a couple I couldn't seperate the roots so left them in their groups. But will keep the group ones low like a bush, even though I think some of them could be different varieties in the group.
Other thing is I've had to move them to my window, which is north-east facing. So sun from around 6am till 10am but remains bright till mid afternoon, just no direct sun.
