The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Doesn't it mean their root systems aren't big enough or something? Sure I read that somewhere..

Got my final pots today.. 8 x 5 litre pots, deffinately going to be running out of space now! At least I've offloaded all the ones I don't want now! :)

My job for Saturday is potting on again..

I think its one of two things, if youve only recently started giving them full sunlight its not yet adapted to the strength of the sun.
If they are used to the sun its probably struggling to pull enough water in to counter what its losing so you need to supply more water, or as said if its got the water available its short on roots to pull the water in.
Good news is chilis really dont seem to mind extreme heat or lack of water and soon recover as soon as they get water again.

I need to get my final pots pretty soon. I'll see if there are any decenl 5L pots in Wilko tomorrow on my dinner break.

Thanks to Acid, got the seeds today. You think I'm too late to pop a couple of seeds in a pot for this year? Should I do it anyway or wait till next year? I'm sure they would be fine if I did it now... If I don't get much this year I could always overwinter them.

Kinda wish i started in feb instead of march now as all my chilli plants are only so big tho my apache which were late starters and troublesome to germinate are the tallest and budding now. My early jalapenos and bell peppers are still just about 5inchs maybe 6 inches high tho they look healthy they seem to have slowed down a lot. Im thinking probably cos some plants get more sun than others i duno. Im in no rush i suppose we have till about august till the sun goes and the cold comes.

Cheers for the seeds Acid, got them today. I'm going to make a growbox and try and get some action out of them this weekend.

Is it usually still this cold in May? Looking at BBC weather its going to be dropping to 5oc tonight and the rest of the week looks the same. Is that too cold for Chilli plants to be out in a greenhouse in?

Nooooo don't say that!!!!

I'm sorry, but it is clearly the case :(

We had a nice spring last year and two really hot weeks at the end of June/start of July. Then it was rain rain rain.

This year we've had an exceptional spring. So no more good weather is left I'm afraid.

(Probably not an accurate prediction)

Nah it will just get warmer and warmer theres loads of months of good sun and warm weather left.

Cant expect every day to be sunny or warm. :p

My weather widget is showing 11c at the mo which is pretty warm for night time weather imo.

My Numex seeds have started to spout, finally! Going to get them in a propagator tonight. Hopefully I'm not too late in the season...... If I am, I'll just use this as an excuse to get some grow lamps :)

Since my seeds became seedlings they have been so slow! In the past few weeks on my window sill, I'm quite sure they haven't grown at all. I thought I'd try them out in the mini-greenhouse, as it gets really quite warm through the day in there. They are on the top shelf. Hopefully being out there will get them growing once more!

Sharing its home with some cucumbers, carrots, lettuces and cabbages :)

Just a few questions.

1. What is this fuzz like mould and is it anything to worry about? I've noticed it a few times but I just wipe it away and it's fine. Is it because my propagator's too humid with not enough air?

2. Is this a flower bud? As you can see my plant isn't that big yet. Should I nip it or just let it grow?

It does look a bit like mould.. Is the top of the soil kept quite wet?

Yeh that is a flower bud coming, just pick them off and it will stop the plant putting all its energy into the flowers. I'm constantly having to pick them off mine at the moment, am going to pot them onto their final containers this week though and then I'll let the flowers grow.

Yeah, I was under the impression that I was to keep anything in the propagator quite damp at all times?

Ah, I'll go pick it off (even though I'm dying for just one chilli) :)

Thanks Street!
