The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Yeah, I was under the impression that I was to keep anything in the propagator quite damp at all times?

Ah, I'll go pick it off (even though I'm dying for just one chilli) :)

Thanks Street!

Yeh always seems a shame to pick them off!

I think you need to keep them moist but not overly wet if that makes sense, maybe try putting some vermiculite/perlite on the top of the soil to stop the mould growing?

You only keep it moist not damp in a propagator and i just use a spray for propagator otherwise anything else is too heavy for the small sections where the seeds are.

And you just use a propagator to germinate really when they have shot out of the soil and got the baby leafs on, transplant em time.

And if your new to gardening dont worry about picking flowers or buds off as the plant will keep putting them out. I have taken about 15 buds off my overwintered jumbo bell pepper and it just keeps making more and more. Theres a ton right now which as its now may and it was big enough anyhow but was waiting for more foilage as it was cut back last year, it is now ready to bud and flower and get the fruit coming. But if your plants are small dont worry about forcing new growth by taking buds off.

Thanks SkeeterUK.

I am indeed very new, albeit with a month worth of gardening skills under my belt, so your comments are very welcome!

How do I know when I should leave the buds to grow? When I deem that the plant is at a decent size? or do I go by the month of the year or...

Those biodegradable pots are prone to mould, you would be far better off using peat pellets rather than them.

Yep I agree. I should have used these this year but instead I went for the funny pots.

Mine got mold on too, its nothing to worry about. Well... mine turned out just fine.

More and more flowers are beginning to open up now. Ive already had one drop off with a chilli emerging! :D

I've got some as well. To be honest, I just prefer the look of the pots, but obviously without mould all over them :)

90% need to be rehoused in the next coming days. I'll be removing the plants due to the mould (even though the instructions state the pots can be re-planted as well).

Well folks, the new big greenhouse is up and a big thanks to my mother for helping me out with it. :) As its a two person job (no one else was available to help and she is into gardening so) especially putting the cover on when its a bit blowy out today.

It has bricks on the sides which seems to be working for keeping the thing from flapping around as much. 3 didnt do but the 4th helped a ton. I still want more bricks tho to make it mega secure.

I have tied the corners to poles into the soil that was reachable at the sides and back of greenhouse. Its a bit windy today, so far so good for a few hrs. Big test is how it lasts tho so i will keep an eye on it.

Nothing in it for now as im seeing how stable it is but when i think its stable (after more bricks in and out of it) i will move plants in it mainly tomatoes and some chillis and maybe start on some other things that isnt too late to do or maybe buy i duno.

Micro toms, some of them are flowering a lot and 2 of em have baby toms growing as shown in a pic.

Apaches in my room are miles bigger than ones in other rooms mostly due i think to the warmth my computer (yep computer lol) is giving the room and the plants love the warm room. (i dont like the heat tho grr so i have fan on for me but still warm for plants).

Overwintered jumbo bell pepper from last year is flowering now. Thinking of repotting it but not sure yet.

Mum got me some tubs of marigolds cos i was lazy with doing em from seed a few weeks back so thats a relief. Tho im not sure i need em in greenhouse but ill stick em in anyhow. Just hope i dont get wasps in the greenhouse cos i hate em and probably wouldnt step in the greenhouse if it was full of em lol.

Since my seeds became seedlings they have been so slow! In the past few weeks on my window sill, I'm quite sure they haven't grown at all. I thought I'd try them out in the mini-greenhouse, as it gets really quite warm through the day in there. They are on the top shelf. Hopefully being out there will get them growing once more!

Sharing its home with some cucumbers, carrots, lettuces and cabbages :)

Wilkinsons £86.

I had to get it at the shop there and then cos brother was kind enough to go get it a few days ago. But if you pop in wilkinsons and pickup there catalogue their is a £10 off £100 spend (online only). So if you were gona get pots and soil to make it up to £100 then it would be £90. Just pick collect in store option when buying online.

Wish i did it as need pots and soil as well as greenhouse but as said its big and u need a car really as carrying it for awhile will kill u. So had to get it then and there as bro is usually very busy so was lucky to nab him to help me pick it up.

mine are all ripe :)
i put a small one in a curry and well i could barely eat it, kept having to stop, cool off, n come back to it :/
2nd wave are now growing :D

My cherry bomb are going bonkers, I am playing bee and pollinating 3-5 flowers a night at the moment. And the speed they are growing is likeomg compared to jalepenos and finger chillis from last year.

My naga is still tiny, cayene and habs are also not much more than seedlings, looks like I may just specialise in cherry bombs next year

Yeah mine which are flowing/fruiting or cherrys as well, the moricha is still small. The curry is catching the cherries up in size, but no flowers yet.
