The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Can anyone recommend a nice sweet chilli without too much heat? I have cayennes and bonnets on the go, but I think they might be too hot to do a lot with (apart from having chilli eating contests and making sauces etc).

I love roquito peppers, but as that's a brand name I can't find any seeds. What's out there OcUK?

Baby bonnet, teenage bonnet, daddy bonnet :D

Wow there's been a lot of activity since I left for my holiday. Some lovely food going on :)

I'm happy to report that all mine seem to have survived someone else's care and the Scotch Bonnets are storming along. I shall have to get some updated pics.

We visited the Eden Project yesterday and one of my friends picked up a Habanero chilli which had fallen off a plant and she brought it back to where we were staying. I had a taster and it was pretty hot! The rest was added to a fry up but we couldn't really taste it :|

I picked up a bottle of cider along with an oil pourer to be used with in conjunction with the bottle when it is empty. Ill be able to create some salad dressing adding my chillies and then stick it in the bottle :)

My Cheyenne's flowers and stocks are falling off :( They are turning brown and then just dying. I try to pollinate them but as I touch them, they just fall off.

I've heard it can be a mix of a few things.

Overfeeding. Over watering. Under watering. Not pollinating. Too much sun. No Enough sun.. bla bla bla.. bla bla bla.

Has this happened to anyone else this year?

I'm going to reduce their food, while also reducing the frequency of feedings. I think I may have over fed, over watered this plant so I'm leaving it to go as dry as possible, prior to any watering. I had to water quite heavily last time as the leaves where withered and looked like they needed some food/water.

My Apache (which is the same size), receives the same amount of food and water is flowering and developing fruit beautifully. There's about 20 chilli's currently growing and the leaves are looking healthy. I understand plants are different but I believe the conditions to be OK.

Any tips, or pointers people?

Roquito peppers are awesome, was unaware they were a brand name. I found this which may explain why they are so sweet and tasty:

"Thank you for your enquiry, Just to confirm, Roquito® is a brand owned by Leathams Ltd and the product is a high quality red jalapeño pepper that comes in sweet syrup, giving a unique hot sweet flavour, with a crunch."

Shame really, people are recommending Rocotos (hotter) or Pepperdews.

My 1st ever attempt at growing stuff to eat, thought I'd start with Jalapenos, coming along nicely and now have 4 flowers that have come out!

I had to change a good proportion of the compost as there were loads of little midge/aphid things living in the soil, plants seem to have perked up OK afterwards.

Bri i would transplant that up to a pot about double the size it is atm. Because it has to sustain 3 plants it needs plenty of room for the roots which i cant imagine that pot it's in atm has the space for.

Here is my harvest of today. Eaten most of the toms tho, too delishious not too lol. Had one of them half green gardeners delight and even tho its not fully ripe, it tasted really nice. But i still think tumbling tom tomatoes are the best.

Contains, apache chillie, early jalapeno, 2 gardeners delight, rest are tumbling toms.

Sorry for the bump, but after trying out a few things, they are still dying :(

If it makes you feel any better, I have a jalapeno who's managed to fruit 2 flowers out of 30 or so... that was with a lot of bee's and me trying to pollinate.

I also have a scotch bonnet (orange one I think) which has like 50 or so flowers which hasnt set fruit with a single one at all.

I recently got one of those grow your own living chilli plants from a supermarket, which I've noticed has set fruit on all flowers but 1 so far. (Like 14 chilli's growing on it atm with more on the way). Anyhow the odd bit about it is that the flowers produce very large amounts of pollen compared to the chilli plants i grew myself... which seem to be struggling in that department.

Perhaps some of you including me have grown infertile chilli plants or something? Really can't think of any other explanation really.

Can you post some piccies, might be easier to tell

What compost did you use ?
How often are you watering ?
How often are you feeding (and with what make / ratio to water ?)

Erm, not sure exactly what you want pics of? the failing flowers id guess?

Went and had a quick check for the compost and im using J Arthur Bowers multipurpose compost.
Im watering them now once a day.. or every 2 days depending on how moist the soil is.
And im feeding it some random generic tomato feed I have, its something like 1 part feed to 4 litres water or something. So tiny amounts as you'd guess. (Feeding them every 2 or 3 days now btw, didnt feed them much at all before i spotted flowers)

I've read that over-watering is the most common culprit for dropping of flowers. I've reduced mine to 2 times a week at the moment. I'm currently drying the plant out. It's not been watered in a week! The flowers are also not producing a lot of pollen AT ALL, so this may be another reason to add to the problems I face.

Anyways, I will also get some photos and more information when I get home.

Cheers :)

I've got mine in a capillary watering tray in preparation for my holiday. Pretty cool, as it means the plants get as much water as they want to pull up, rather than how much I think they want from above :D
