The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Over wintering a couple of cayenne's and a sole sweet califonia wonder. But have jalapeno's, bishop's crown's, twilight's and a couple of other sweets at seedling stage now for early next year.

Well I learned my lesson about chopping chillies without gloves on last night! I decided to dry my last batch of Ring of Fires but forgot about wearing gloves. About an hour after chopping them, my hands started burning and I was in agony until about 3am when I finally managed to get to sleep! I'd tried every supposed remedy on the net for stopping the burning, from using alcohol to bleach!

Heres the last crop of chillies that caused me so much pain!

I bought a sauce made from ring of fires from a market when I was on holiday. The guy must have used so many chillis to make it because it was UNBELIEVEABLY hot, hotter than something made with scotch bonnets, total collapse of the nasal system and streaming eyes. It was great :)

What's best way of keeping them over winter? Should they be pruned.
They also need repotting, when best to do this.
When can I stick them back under the artificial lights, to regrow and fruit?

They've been outide for a few months now, some new leaves, but most have fallen off.

Oh and how do you stop those tiny fly things that seem to breed in soil. I read that covering the soil would help, but didn't seem to make any difference.

I searched around elsewhere and some trim all the way back to the stem and also the roots back to golf ball size. Alternatively just bring them in and let them drop what they want to, so long as the stem stays green they should be ok.

Those things in the soil are scarid fly (or something like that), watering from the bottom and keeping the top inch or 2 of soil dry should help, along with not using compost that's been left open outdoors apparently.

I overwintered mine with great success last year without pruning or doing anything daft with the roots. I have pruned these same plants back this year, but only as they had a pretty bad pest-infestation and I wanted to get rid of as much as possible to help me clean up my stocks. Other than that, they would have gone for 3 years.

I'd re-pot them in Jan to give them a push into big growth in the spring.

there seems to be many different methods for overwintering. I've just chopped mine back to where the steam first forked leaving on all lower leaves. In the spring I'll break up the compost, trim back the roots and put back into the same pot with some fresh compost. We will see what happens from there.

Ive chopped back my naga and they are in my pc room on the windowsill, they are slowly growing some leaves/branches so if any get too big I will just snip them back again. I assume they may well just slow down even more once they get proper cold nights.
I am planning to overwinter my Cherry bombs, cayennes and habs just need to get round to a big cut back as they are still outside.

You do need to at least keep the roots damp though, last year I allowed my plants to get too dry and they just wouldn't perk back up.

Found a really simple way to dry chilies. Slice a cut into the flesh that penetrates into the middle so that the liquid doesnt collect inside and make them go moldy, then just pin them up through the stalk in the airing cupboard, they dry so damn fast its really impressive.

The ones I pruned back didn't do as well the next year.

Ive just let all my plants die this year. Going to start fresh next summer but only going to have a few plants this time.

I've done the same, couldn't be bothered to over winter them plus I quite like growing them from scratch! I'm going to try putting them in a bit earlier next year as they took ages to fruit properly this year when I planted them at the end of February. I did make a load of bottles of chili oil which has quite a kick! Going to be giving them out as Christmas presents! :D

Does any of these look like Jalapenos to anyone? id have said the bottom two green ones most fit the bill, bought a bag of mixed chillis from Tesco looking for jalapenos as i am addicted to chipotles so thats what im going to concentrate on growing next year, those Chilligrows from Greenhouse sensation work absolute wonders :D

will also be doing 1 hot choc hab, 1 Pusa jwala and 1 chinese five colour but most will be Jals

Anyway enough talking heres the picture
