The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Hi guys, my Chilli plants from last year are still "somewhat" still alive, although they are slowly loosing their leaves. Is there anything I can do to help them survive the winter?

The plants lose their leaves when temperatures drop, how does the rest of the plant look? Don't water it too much or the roots will rot. When the plants get more heat and sunlight they'll pick up again.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I found a hydroponics shop nearby so I'll have a look tomorrow.

if they dont sell mylar they will sell diamond reflecting sheeting or something similar which is just as good and costs the same price pretty much.

dont get any of the plastic thats black on one side and white on the other its basicly just to stop light leaks you want something with proper reflective properties.

Where's the best place to get some seeds? I'm looking for Pusa Jwala. Might order some Jalapeño as well if the price is right. Will be my first attempt at growing chilli's, looking forward to it.

Just need to decide what compost and pots i will need. Are there any guides on the forum? Could someone link me if so? If not i will look elsewhere. Excited for this now!

plant magic is suposed to be awesome as its plagrons bat mix, there both around 10-15quid for 50 litres but i think they will only be available from hydroponic shops/websites as its aimed for towards cannabis growers
they contain top quality ingredients and compost though

J arthur Bowers with added innes are good , i think the no2 is rated very highly

BNQ often get good results in the "which" magazine trials but ive read on forums how people nearly always end up with fungus gnats.

Westland or whatever its called is usually full on fungus nats , scarid, even worms!

I just used tomato growbags from Focus. I got loads of chillies from my plants as well. I bought about 7 -8 bags of the stuff last year an found it to be great. The Peat free version had little twigs and stones in it though.

As for pots, I found that 3 litre pots are the perfect size for keeping the plant smaller for growing inside on a window ledge. Moving to a 5 litre pot made the plant grow a few inches taller and bush out a bit, also with bigger chillies. But they were a tad too big for inside really.

I've managed to procure a greenhouse this year (currently has no glass though). So I'll probably use 5 litre pots or maybe even 10l tubs, to get as many chillies as possible.

Only problem with planting outside is the caterpillars . I was picking hundreds off my 3 plants I put outside last year. It was all for nothing as well, as they just died of disease or something and all the chillies looked manky so i didnt pick them.

i used tomato growbags as well. £1.30 from homebase for 33litres. £1 for perlite from wilko's and went from a 3" pot to a 2/3litre and then to a 5litre.

finally got around to connecting my 85w CFL from green lamp up and as soon as its turned on a small amount of smoke comes from the balast and it smells like the electrics are cooking

contacted them and they are sending out a replacement today and dont want the faulty one back, good customer service!

Just got myself some Scotch bonnet, Cayenne and Rainbox Mix chilli seeds ready for this season. I started too late last time and only got about 3 chilli's so hoping for many more this time!

For reference, how long do Nagas take to germinate in people's experience? I planted them a few weeks ago now and there's nothing showing just yet. I've never had one this slow before, so I'm just wondering if it's not warm enough for them in the house during the day.

one week to a month acording to google..

aparently theres a fungus which can kill them if you over water the seeds to much, stick them in a plastic pot/sandwhich bag etc and stick it on your router/modem ?

works great as a propagator heater for me its like having a proper heating map

Ideally they need to be kept between 20 & 30c and will take anything upto a month to germinate (mine took 3 weeks)

I've also started mine earlier this year as last year I didn’t start until the beginning of April and was still taking red fruit off the plants in late November -(all that with a propagator and lights up untill June) and it was costing a fortune in heating for the greenhouse :)

Had nothing from my seeds in my pots, so put some in wet paper in a freezer bag on top of my modem, maybe I'll get more from them :)
Cheers guys. I'll give them another couple of weeks to do something and then go for the 'damp kitchen roll-in a sandwich bag-on the router' trick.

Who knows, maybe then the others will pop up too and I'll have twice the number the gf envisaged :p

Yup, Nagas take a while to germinate, some of mine took longer than a month! I'd recommend ~27degC so sticking them on the router should do nicely! (just keep an eye on the moisture)
The seeds I sent out are from the Naga that was the fastest to germinate. If the seeds take after the parent they should be quicker germinating, faster growing and quick to harvest. The other two naga plants are slower but they seem to drink less water (perhaps it's because I tried a more soil heavy mix in their pots).

Fingers crossed for you :D

I've not tried this place however they have Pusa Jwala on their web page.
Might be tempted to grab some, however at the same time I want to keep my Naga plants as pure as possible. They're the plants from the seeds bought directly from Joy and Michael Michaud.

My Chilli plant looks like it's almost dead... Lost 95% of its leaves bit the stems are still green. I have moved it somewhere warmer, but if it does not improve soon, it's going in the bin.

Does anyone know what kind of plant it is or how long it should live? Picture from its healthier days below.

Thanks
