Lungs aren't muscles, they are just bags. It'll be the muscles around your rib cage, core and the diaphragm that is strong to do that.

Well of course I meant the groups of muscles that activate the lungs, didn't think it was necessary to list them. Just can't imagine the diaphragm or intercostals getting that powerful through natural training. I mean it's a hot water bottle.....I've been known to struggle to blow up a balloon before!:D

That being said, I just had a look on youtube, and there's some pretty averagely built guys doing it, so perhaps some just have super diaphragms naturally. Think I'll hold off trying it, as when someone finds me passed out, I'll have hell of a job explaining it.

The reason why machine fly and actual freeweight flyes differ massively in weight moved is because it's totally different mechanics. I doubt many could fly 35KG DB's let alone do a negative rep with them safely!

The pec-fly at uni went upto 140KG odd and I'd stack that occasionally. No way in hell would I be able to fly 70's! I've not done much more than 25's and even then it's uncomfortable. I do rate the pec-fly though can be a decent bit of kit, great for pre/post exhaustion work and warm ups :)

I still can' believe my eyes when I see that on pumping iron! Surely that has to be a product of using the "special supplements"....

Those "special supps" ;) were legal back in the 60's too.
What makes me laugh is when some of the current bodybuilders that are far bigger then the oldskool claiming they are natural!!

:D

That's for contractual reasons from sponsorship deals. Not because they really want people to believe that they are natural.

I don't think I'm really a fan of his. I can appreciate it and it is/was fantastic.

I don't have a picture to hand and am work so don't fancy the 'homo' comments for looking, but from memory I always thought he was a little top heavy. Mostly back and arms.

Something like Phil Heath is more complete for me and he doesn't look particulary unhealthy.

Yes his legs did lack slightely, but hey, you add and mix things up a bit, im just talking generally

Hehe - very good point on the mechanics.

I think my PB on the Chest-Flys Machine is at least 104kg @ 7 reps - it is a hell of a lot easier than the dumb-bell method and it still astonishes my TP that I can lift so much with little effort on that Machine. But then his Smith Squat PB is a lot better than mine.

It would be easier, as Benny said, its held up by a machine, 'all' you're doing is moving the wait, not holding it in place etc etc

It's the same with other chest machines, along with Smith maachines

The only machine which seems to work backwards is Lateral Pulldown. Okay it's a different movement from a pull up but similar. 110KG/120KG on a cable pulley lat pulldown is near impossible for me. Yet on a Leverage lat pull down I can stack 125KG. And can knock out pullups +20KG (plus 90KG BW = 110KG) reasonably comfortably. Wouldn't be able to shift the stack to get my legs under the pads on a pulley lat pull down at anything over 100!

Tonight session already planned :)

Weighted pull ups wide
Weighted close grip
Deadlifts
Bent over rows superset with bent over shrugs

followed by

ez bar wide curls 12,6,12,6
Cable bar curls 12,6,12,6
inclined hammer curls 10 x 3
single arm preachers 10 x 3

That's the main reason, as you stated, it's the levers and pulleys these machines use that complicate how much you are actually moving, just like the gears on a bike - I might be able to cycle at 30mph, but I'd be fighting crime and stuff if I could run that fast!

I'm going to use the new Gym as an opportunity to get away from the Machines.

My TP agrees that free-weights are always better, so apart from us doing more CV Work in the new Gym we will be almost exclusively using the free-weights only.

I only use free weights anyway at home :p

Better than bread - though try Food Doctor's multi seed pittas, they have about 10g of protein in each one and are pretty tasty and are wholemeal too. :)

Thanks for the tip... Lovely post workout snack.
