The 2012 Chilli growing thread - the second burn!

The lights run pretty cool. The heated floor is more for germination than growing. I prefer to have the box dark and at a constant 74 degrees. With lights on and off, the temp might change a bit much, so it's good to have a steady temp. Plus when the light goes off at night, that room gets quite cold as it has no radiator, so a little bit of background heat will do no harm.

It's not just chillies. I will also be using it for the likes of toms and cucumbers, possibly courgettes.

I can overwinter a couple of sensitive chilli plants, and then best part of all, the lights are strong enough for me grow an entire herb garden during winter. Fresh basil and coriander at a moments notice throughout the year is sounding good to me.

Those lights will run resonably warm, have a similar set up, all though home made.

But hey, the lights are great and shocked how fast overwintered plants kick back into action.

Hi all. Just a quick question. When do I need to be potting these seedlings? Some of the bigger ones are in this photo. Looks like they might be ready to me, but should I wait a little?

No immediate rush I wouldn't have thought. I'd pot up once they have become a little stronger and have their first set of true leaves.

Thank you for the input. I am worried about them hitting the top/sides of the lid. Is it OK to take the lid off at all?

True leaves = 4 leaves?

You can take the lid off yeah. My propagator doesn't have its lid on anymore in the day. I just put it on in the evenings to keep the temps up (our house can get quite cold).

Yep 4 leaves. The two you see on your seedlings now are the seed leaves.

By all means, you could transplant into single pots now and they would probably be fine. But personally I'd wait a little, if only to give them a chance to develop more roots and the first true set of leaves. :)

Just got some seeds in the post, thanks Enzo!

Will have to get some pics sorted of mine. Have had one flowering since December, quite happily churning out chillis inside.

Was me, hope everyone else got theres

Yeah I got mine. Only got back from a few nights is Spain late last night or I would have thanked you earlier in the week. Thanks very much for all you the seeds that you sent me

Gave indiviual pots to the curry plants with 4leaves. Accidently bent one, but covered up with soil past the bend and the other one is also falling over.

Hoping I was just a tad rough and they'll man up soon! I'm wanting to clear some space from the prop and hopefully get some first year flowering perennials in!

Still only one Summer of Fire has germinated (planted on 13th) and no signs of any of the seeds planted on the 17th - couple more curry and Ring of Fire.

Got mine in a few weeks ago. Will post pictures up soon so people can see the progress. My Hot Marble chilli's aren't doing very well though :(

My pepper are quite annoying, they're tall but still only got two leaves so don't want to repot yet. Still a lack of anything I planted later on =[
I would need to check it but germination powder looks like 100% success while without could be something as low as 20-40% Even the curry ones, which should be easy, haven't germinated.

My flower seeds I planted on saturday have also started appearing! Hollyhock, evening primrose and cupid's dart.

edit: and I think I've lost the curry plant that I bent the other day. I moved the pot and it fell over, I gently pushed it back up and it came out the soil. I pushed the soil away so the "stump" is revealed. It might come back. Who knows.

I planted 9 without any germination powder four on the 13th, five on the 17th. Only one on the 13th has germinated- summer of fire.

edit2:

I've accepted the fact that the ones that haven't germinated by now wont. Is it ok to move this tray onto the window sill to carry on growing? I want to free up the room in the prop.

I don't see any problem in moving the tray to the window. Mine are looking a bit like yours, tall and two sets of leaves. Being tall is nothing to worry about, when you pot them on you can set them deep in the pot and bury the excess stem. Will give the plant a nice boost as roots will grow from the stem.

I didn't to that last year so it will be good to see what difference it makes.
