The 2012 Chilli growing thread - the second burn!

Hmm now I am a bit confused. Like CHokKA I have left the lid on my electric prop which has my seedlings in. After reading what was going on with his and that the lid should be off I left mine off yesterday morning. When I got home last night one of my taller ones had also wilted and to be honest looked like it may well have been dead. I gave it a little spray of water and popped the lid back on. Checked it before I went to bed last night and it had sprang back upright and was looking fine again (and still is today). I am at a loss what to do now as I l know the lid should really be off but I am concerned that they all might wilt.

I really want to put them into little pots but they still only have 2 leaves so that isn't recommended is it?

I've had the lid off for a few days, the one that had wilted has come back up again, but the other two aren't really growing much at all. The soil in the tray is getting bone-dry almost every day or two, so I am forced to water it because I've never known chilli's to like very dry soil. The soil is dry right to the middle, I dug a bit out last night before I watered it.

Honestly, I had massive success growing them from seeds a few years back, but they were germinated in an airing cupboard and we've moved house since then and so no longer have an airing cupboard. Since trying with the heated propagator, I've had minimal success really. Anyone got any good tips for germinating and growing in a heated prop?

I'm stuck for things to suggest. Seems you have from of weird ass sorcery going on, or maybe you have a haunted house!?

For me its always been a case of sowing seeds, and putting in the heated prop until they germinate. Then take them out and give them plenty of light.

Does anyone else have problems with soil drying out every day? Unless you live in a volcano, then I don't see how it manages to happen! :D

I've had success with the heated prop too, switched on and lid on. Hardly have to wait them as the soil is so damp it's looks like lovely rich black soil. The pots on the windowsill are looking very dry though.

Chiming in with my current set-up. This is the second lot I've sowed this year after I uh.. 'fed' the last seedlings with undiluted baby bio.. I guess you learn from your mistakes.

Anyway, I've got 8 jalapeños - they're on the left. 8 cayennes - in the middle and 8 Scotch bonnets on the right.

They're sitting on my windowsill which gets plenty of light during the day in an unheated prop above my radiator. Been keeping the vent open now that most of them have germinated.
I've been considering cutting up the seed tray and moving the germinated seedlings out so the humidity doesn't affect them too much - I think I saw this posted somewhere in this thread.

Currently trying to get some sort of lighting set up for overnight. Having a hard time finding any decent bulbs to use.
I do have a halogen lamp, but I enjoy not paying the earth for my electricity bill.

Need to get some soil and start germinating some more plants.

Nice going Glaucus. They're doing well. You been growing with lamps?

As an update, today I've got another two seedlings popping up. A Numex Twilight and a Ring of Fire. Hoping more start to sprout soon too :)

Awesome, might have to look into that sometime this year.

Another update: I've now got 8 seedlings in my heated prop. I've taken the lid off today since the weather here is meant to be lovely and warm, so leaving it open on the sunny window sill should help them along nicely :)

My oldest chilli seedling is already sprouting her second set of leaves! Almost time to repot her :)

Anyone got any tips to remove greenfly? My banana chilli plant from last year has loads of them just sitting waiting for the leaves to sprout, but I don't want to do anything that might harm the plant.

Had loads last year towards the end of the season. It got the stage where I just gave up.

Take the plants outside and just knock them off for starters. Maybe try some bug killer?

They leave behind a horrible sticky residue on the leaves which eventually affects transpiration.

I am joining this thread as a late starter mut I have decided to sow some this year. Not going to be able to pot until the end of the month but I see that sowseeds have numerous varieties than can be sown in April.

Will they be ok outside at that time of year or should I get them going inside regardless? Really not sure what ones to go for but fancy some very hot ones. Anyone got any suggestions (or even seeds)? :)

These are their suggestions - http://www.sowseeds.co.uk/chilli-seeds-1.html?sow_date=April&sow_hot_scale=Very+hot

Just to let you know I am currently lacking in space but have a nice sun trap outside and will keep them in pots. Quite tempted to get a selection and plant them all in one long square pot.

Id deffo start them inside and then wait for them to get a little more established before moving them outside. Keep an eye on frosts!

Just buy some random hot ones and see what happens :D Habanero and Scotch Bonnets seem a standard hot seed of choice.

Just wondering when people would start recommending using the chilli feed Chilli Focus? I've done my first potting on a week or two ago and most plants now have 6 to 8 leaves so just wondering what you guys do?

Anyone know if it is ok to feed seedlings with Baby Bio? I have two that don't look very strong and thought some Baby Bio might help them along.
