The 2012 Chilli growing thread - the second burn!

A couple of questions for the experts. I've harvested loads of chillies from my two plants, a cayenne and a jalapeno and there are still plenty of chillies ripening on the plants. Both plants are still producing plenty of flowers, will these still produce good fruit or is it too late in the season for them to ripen? Also, can I over winter the plants (they are in a conservatory) and if so what's the best way? Thanks.

You can give it a go! Pollinate the flowers and see if you have enough time!

You can overwinter your plants yes, but it isn't always successful. It is worth more trying the overwintering technique with chilli plants which take a while to mature like Scotch Bonnets and Nagas. But with Cayenne and Jalapeños, they mature quickly enough anyway, so it may not be worth the effort :)

Thanks. I'll start again next spring and probably try a couple of different varieties.

My crop this year was a bit of a washout. Had to stick them outside and with our shocker of a year weather wise they didnt even start to flower until around a month ago. They have all been ravaged by some parasite as well. Most of the leafs have been half eaten and pretty much all the chilli's that did start to grow have a nibble taken out of them.

Last years was a good crop when I was growing them inside but the missus hated the mess. Now I finally have my own house I am going to make a bit of room for a little green house ready for next year.

Been such a crap year for growing that my Scotch Bonnets are not even hot in the slightest, though I do realise that I may have bought some dud seeds.

Really disappointed.

Todays harvest, largest of the three I've had so far, still plenty to ripen :)

Moruga, Yellow Bhut, Red Bhut, Yellow & Red 7 pot, Butch-T and Naga & Naga Viper

pics to follow when i stop being a noob

Hey guys, just harvested my 6-7 chilli plants and I'm looking for some ideas of what to do with them!

I've found a nice chutney recipe, any other suggestions? Looking at doing a few things with them.

Thanks, will check it out!

Anyway, some pictures of the harvest!

Good god, you lucky *****, that's an amazing haul.

I really need to find a free greenhouse on Gumtree before the end of winter.

You so need to make these

Found a reverse engineered recipe for the habanero fritters, so want to give this a try.

1 c. sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
2 eggs
1/2 c. milk
1 tbsp. melted butter
1/4 c. sugar
2 tbsps. ground black pepper
1/4c Garlic powder
1 Tbs cumin
1 onion
30 fresh habaneros 5lbs
2 cups mozzarella
1/2 cup cheddar

Should make 15 ice cream scoops.

Can't find the habanero salsa though, which contains another 30 chilies.

WOW! A Massive haul! Very impressive. I've just been slowly working my way through mine.

Could do with a recipe for something which will use quite a few up.

Do any of you guys know if you can pickle them without using pickling salt and just put them in distilled pickling vinegar? I couldn't find any pickling salt in Tesco today :(

Hi peeps just joined with the hope that i can get some good advice and help to grow my own chillies. As right now i think i have black fingers not green. I am an ex coal miner living in the welsh valleys and to be honest the only thing i ever got to grow for me was green beans for a couple of years and then they went t*** up. This year as i live quite a way from the nearest town i tried to grow some numex twilight for the window and habanero as i like hot chilli, only three numex germinated for me 2 died the other is fine. so if anyone has any hot chillies they no longer need or can use ill be happy to help you get rid of them as it is imposible to get hot chillies around here, would love a crack at the butch t and the likes. Maybe then with the help i can find on here i will get better luck growing my own next season as there is no where around here that you can get hot chillies, some of you guys have amazing crops wish i could do that but for some reason me and growing just dont work but i am going to try again next season. Thanks in advance for all your help and advice i might find on here and if you do get any of the hot ones you don't want dont thor them out throw them to me they will be much appreciated. Brian

Hi again guys a little advice please if you can. I am looking for some hot seeds to start next season, what would you suggest for a total novice i have limited space so would like heavy cropers i have room for about half dozen outside and 3/4 inside. Also what time of the year should i try to start them i have read that you start in early january. The room i will use is always very warm so no trouble with that side, just for some reason nothing grows for me "maybe this year things will be more lucky".

Enzo are you still there m8 or has the mob had a clear out. That only happens on Valentines day does'nt it. Or is this omerta week.
