I have a quick question on rest periods. I started back at the gym yesterday after a couple of months out due to injury and I feel I have that typical first time back at the gym aching etc. It was not bad enough to stop me going gym again today however is was a hindrance and I felt like I could have done better without it. How long would you recommend rest for after a situation like this and is it doing more bad then good working out the day after if you are still aching a little from the day before?

First sessions are always best resting for longer. Your body needs to reengage its muscle memory if you were a semi serious gym goer.

Guy who does PT at my gym takes them in gently. If you return gunning for what you were hitting before you risk injury.

Is this a common thing reiyushin?

That spotting was awful. I would hate to see some of them guys bomb with a heavy bench it could have resulted in far worse than what we saw there.

Did they just go to a high school gym class and pick kids at random?

Thankfully not, there was definitely mistakes made in Killeen, the outrage should ensure properly trained spotters from now on (and as has been at all previous comps I'm aware of)

Hopefully you guys don't mind me discussing HIIT here :p

I've been doing a bit of HIIT on the bike/rower recently but want to use the treadmill as well - rather than doing a max sprint I'd like to do a lower speed but at an incline. Was thinking 5% @ 15kph to begin with but just wondered if anyone has any experience?

My wrist hasn't really got better from 5 weeks ago when I injured it so had my x-ray today to see if there's a stress fracture in there, really sucks to be skipping the gym when I had such "hella gainz" in April and June.

I want to swap bench press for dumbbell press as I feel my chest working more with dumbbells. Does anyone know if I'll be neglecting any muscles if I do this?

I'm following ICF 5x5 and don't feel like I'm hitting my chest enough (1-2 times per week following a workout a/b approach). I want to add an accessory/high volume chest exercise to the day I'm not currently doing any chest exercises. I was thinking incline db flies but I was just wondering if anyone has found a particularly good exercise for building the chest?

Cheers

Dumbbells are best because they are the least stable, requiring more muscles to work in a dedicated pattern. With flat bench, you can brace one side again the other, and with a machine press, you might as well not bother. ;)

So dumbbell bench is always my first choice. :)

Doing HIIT with sprints can be a bit dicey if you're not warmed up properly, have tightness or your running technique is ****. Incline ones are a bit safer IIRC.
