Then he'd have posted yesterday surely? I actually randomly remembered this thread recently... but didn't think to search it out or bump it. Maybe it being summer jogged the other poster's memory.

People chasing the cash have to be prepared to work for it. You don't get the big bucks without the big responsibility, the big hours, or the big skills.

As long as you're mentally prepared for the fact that you almost never get a 6 figure salary without a serious amount of graft, both before and during, then fine. But don't pine after huge money and expect it to be an easy ride once you get there. Prepare your anus.

IIRC he didn't want to work for it.

Last I heard his IT job contract was ending and he was living at his mums with his cat who didn't seem to like him.

Curious for an update though.

I'd suggest moving up north, 27k isn't a terrible salary. I'm a grad on this now in Newcastle and I live a more than comfortable life and can save up 1k per month. Combine this with some freelance work and I'm doing alright.

I fear our OP's dreams were/will be busted by a lack of motivation and effort. Nothing wrong with that, we are all built differently, but it is virtually impossible to earn serious money without serious effort. Fifty grand isn't chump change, but it's not serious money either, so he might strike lucky, but without more than a dream and post it's going to be a very hard slug I suggest.

When I read this thread when it was new, I thought "no chance" and wondered if I could pull it off. I then forgot about this thread and that was that. Today I totted up my last 12 payslips and well.... I'm not as poor as I thought :D

Yep. I work my ass off and don't make even close to 50k anymore. Should be another 5 years before I'm on that.

Having said that in some industries it should be a lot easier.

I'd need to become a regional manager for a conglomerate to earn £50k+. Not saying I don't think that's unobtainable but it would come with serious responsibility.

You have a plan, direction and clear vision. Short term hit, long term gain and you're on a new journey, from the position of having done it before already so fairly sure you'll do it again. Most people live from week to week, month to month and find 100 reasons why they can't, haven't or won't and because of that they are pretty much guaranteed that they can't, haven't and won't.

More money, sadly, tends to come with more responsibility and pressure. :(

Interesting thread from what I read. Good on the OP to put himself out there; hopefully it comes to more than a forum post.

Having been in IT for more than a bit, then id advise just getting in at the ground level with the right attitude and with personal development in your own time (pluralsight for example) and having the right attitude to spot and act upon opportunities you will quickly rise up the ranks. Lots of people around with "skills" but having the right attitude and work ethic as well is a rare commodity.

You should be able to match your current salary (25k?) anywhere in the country with pretty much any IT role within 18 months. From there 50k is doable as a permie but you will either need to be lucky or go contracting with your new found experience to attain that salary.

Ill give you an example.. I hired an entry level 1st line support guy last year. He has 8 years in a Tesco store as a team lead, and before that 10 years in the navy. 30~ years old, 2 kids etc etc. We hired him on 19k (more than tesco), and now we pay him about 24k. He came in with pretty much zero IT skills, just the right mindset and atittude. Where he gets to is largely up to him. A lot of personal development, some luck and probably a few job moves; and just maybe he could be earning 50k.

If you can learn a coding language such as javascript, python, etc this is a feasible plan.

I work in recruitment and have placed developers with no more than personal training, and 4 - 5 years experience in a permanent job into roles paying £350-450/day which is more than double that 50k target. You would however need to put a lot of effort into being good at it, and also pick the right companies to work for, but 50k in 5 years is pretty easy to attain in contract software development, or even contract IT work in general.
