The Air Rifles & Pistols thread

how safe is it to eat wild rabbits you shoot?

Fine. But you won't want to eat ones with myxomatosis. When I was younger and had the dogs for coursing, myxy'd rabbits that were killed were gutted and left for the foxes / owls / rats in the fields.

Not harmful to people or dogs, but if you get a nice close up look and smell of a myxy'd rabbit and still want to eat it you've a stronger stomach than me.

IMVHO pistols (and even then only the higher powered ones @ +5.5 ft lbs) only have a very limited place in the killing of vermin, and that is the dispatch of caged ones at point blank range. Another point is that you should only ever point a gun at something you wish to kill. They're not for scaring away animals. If you're unwilling to kill the squirrels then look at ways of squirrel proofing your feeders :)

I was thinking about buying a new Daystate or Steyr but first I thought I should see what I could do with my old 2009 model BSA R10 .177 and I am pleased I put the effort in.

List of things I did:

Oiled the stock with Walnut Oil Preparation and buffed with #0000 steel wool
Cut down the shroud and removed baffles, fitting a VC Moderator directly to the barrel thread rather than the end of the shroud
Removed the indexing from the trigger and bought a new style self indexing magazine
Replaced the MK1 pellet probe with a MK2 with Banjo Pin, the MK1 had lots of the nickel plating flaked off and was slightly bent.
MK2 Hammer sear pin for easy mag loading
Polished the trigger and hammer sears to make the trigger action smoother
Fit a delrin spring guide and deburred the hammer spring to help reduce noise and improve consistency
Big ball bolt, great with gloves in cold wet weather
New style pressure gauge which is easy to read
Replaced the stock regulator (which I had already rebuilt twice!) with a HuMa reg to transform the rifle!

I didn't take a load of pictures but here are some bits on the table after I had finished the stock, cut down the shroud and fit the reg into the block.

The silly big scope is just for testing and target shooting as the length of the garden is ~90 yards.
I use JSB Exact Heavy 10.34gn pellets for targets and hunting, with them the fps now is only varying by less than 5 across a full charge, I could never get that before even with weighed match pellets at optimal charge.

I am really happy with it now and for about 200 quid I pretty much have a new rifle!

Thanks guys, I had the pick of may be 20 stocks when I bought it back in 2009 and this one was by far the best in my opinion.
All the lines of grain flow really well on both sides and it is the main reason I decided to stick with it and do the upgrade bits rather than sell and buy something else.
Plus I love tinkering with things :D

With the cut down shroud and moderator it is now only ~3" longer than stock but almost no muzzle report and still has the full 15" barrel.

I love tinkering to an extent, but only until they're set up just how I like them - my HW100KT now has **** of loctite on everything because it's set up just right, and it keeps my paranoia about stuff shifting at bay!

What glass is going on the top?

All I do is put a bead of superglue on the hammer spring adjuster once I have the power set as the spring can turn it over time and that stops it from happening.

Probably going to get a Leupold hunting scope next month in the US, 2-7 or 3-9, don't need much for the 30-50 yards I tend to shoot at.

They have a nice little ultralight range with 28 or 33mm objectives.

Would rather have a fixed parallax if they have any at lower yards, 60 or 100 is annoying for an air rifle.
If not I will just get the adjustable objective if they focus from 10 or 15 yards.

Lovely job on the R 10. I really need to crack on with my Mk1 Airsporter restoration as its been in bits for 2 months or more now untouched as ive been preoccupied with other things

Holy Necro post!

Well it's been a long time but i've finally picked this back up again. Life intervened but I'm now back to get on with this and get them both restored.

In the new few weeks I'm going to look to send the Airsporter off to Colin Malloy to be hot blued. I've tidied up the Airsporter stock a bit more and sanded and shaped it further, I've managed to work out some more of the dings on the stock too.
I've gave it another wash down once i had finished today (see pics below). I also redefined the butt stock groves with a warding file as they had become squashed and misshapen (Pic below is of the meteor stock but has been done on both)

Main reason I'm doing the stocks at the moment is I want to start applying Tru oil soon so i took the stock off my Mk 2 Meteor to tidy that one up before continuing with the Airsporter stock. I'll use the Meteor as a practice piece (obviously trying to make a good job of the Metor) then I'll move onto the Airsporter once I'm more confident.

When i first posted these in this thread and you can see the stock conditions:

Today's pics after i finished work and sat down with them (Darker one is the Airsporter):

Well I have gotten back into the sport and re-joined the fold at my local shooting club. Picked myself up a brand new Airarms 510 ultimate sporter with a Hawk Panorama scope. Cracking rifle, really happy with it.

Need to pick me up a 300bar cylinder on the cheap in the midlands. Time to start scouring the web haha!

Well i had absolutely no idea this thread was a thing!

I always wanted to try target shooting with a nice air rifle ! however i never really had the money for it/could justify spending on it especially if i ended up not enjoying the sport.

Now that i have seen this thread that urge to try it out is back. Can you guy's make any recommendations for good target rifles? These won't be used for dispatching any rodents ect but i take it some of the boundary's of a good rodent rifle fall into a good target rifle or am i mistaken ?

Cheers
Harry

Target rifles tend to be brightly coloured and quite expensive (upto £2k for a good one like Steyr or a bit cheaper for a AirArms EV2/FTP-900 etc) so they don't get taken out into a muddy field where they can get bashed , dropped or covered in mud but I've seen people out with them before so it's not a complete no-no.

I prefer rifles I can take into the field without worry and I've had everything from a BSA springer to C02 to nearly a dozen PCP's with some heavily modded stuff thrown in but when I moved to Scotland I had to get rid of it all as I couldn't find any permissions, mainly due to air rifles having a bad rep and maybe even because I was English too as some farmers were really abusive when I asked - who knows!

Anyway, good FT rifles are the Steyr LG 110FT, Air Arms EV2 or FTP-900 or Daystate Mk4 Target. For a beginner the cheaper AirArms MPR FT is a good starting point but there are lots of options out there so my list is by no means exhaustive.

I strongly wouldn't recommend any of the above target rifles as they are vastly expensive and at a guess he wont get into competitive target shooting so no point in grabbing one of those.

A decent PCP rifle tuned up will be more than suitable unless he wants to go full on FT. Air Arms 410/510, BSA R10 Weihrauch HW100 or a Daystate Huntsman are all fine rifles and are very accurate especially when tuned.

i've used a 410 but not the 510, Any major differences between the two or is it just purely build quality?

I am not sure if anyone can help but I got out my Tanfoglio Witness 1911 yesterday for the first time in about a year. I loaded her up and fired about 3 shots and noticed a distinct lack of power, then it suddenly discharged all the Co2 out the end of the barrel in a loud hiss.

I stripped the slide down and noticed a BB lodged in the blowback piston so I disassembled the piston and removed the BB. The thing is I am not sure if that was the issue or if there could be a problem with valve in the magazine?

Does anyone have any experience with this or similar pistol that could perhaps shed some light?

Much appreciated. :)

Probably a dry seal. I'd strip it down and apply silicone spray or grease to the seals.

Had it happen in my co2 Beretta and airsoft pistols after not using them for a while.
