*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

Anyone talking about how good/magical their iPad is will be talking about a device that that they can actually own and have in their hand and use right now. Android tablets are all largely in the future and all we hear is how they *will* blow away the iPad just because they have a longer list of features and specs. Everyday without serious competition from Android in the tablet market is another day when Apple can sell more iPads and bring more people into the Apple ecosystem. I know A lot of Android fans like to believe that Apple only sells to brainwashed, gullible sheep but the halo effect is real and the iPad will only help that. I'd rather be the company selling millions of tablets now than having to play catchup in the future.

Hello ipad folks,

I'm toying with the idea of purchasing an ipad, was tempted before release but decided not to bother at the time.

I really need to know what the ebook reader experience is like, I currently have a Sony reader so would prolly look to sell that if I get an ipad. I only tend to read in hour long chunks so wondered what the screen was like for eye strain and the like.

The ipad would come in a lot handier for tech manual PDF's and the such.

Thanks for any info !

i use iBooks a lot and still love it the joy of reading books on the ipad is amazing, i dont use it for pdfs though is i prefer goodreader for that but epubs are great

I spend a lot of time watching BBC's iPlayer on my iPod touch and I wondered if savvy sites like this "see" the iPad as a mobile device like they do the pod. Mobile content is obviously designed for small screens on phones and would be a waste of the iPad's capabilities, so do you get http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/ or (from memory - link may not work!) http://mobile.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/ ?

iPlayer on the iPad is very good and an official app is due out soon™

Wow - I've never even seen the ../bigscreen/... component of the BBC URL before!

Also: how'd you know I used iPlayer almost exclusively for the awesome Matt Smith's Doctor Who series? :D

(Roll on Christmas special!)

AT the moment I have on O2 sim and I am not using it enough to justify it. There is an Orange pay as you go tariff that is much better suited to my needs.

The contract on O2 allows me to only pay per month if I wish.

Can I just stop paying the monthly O2 fee, take the O2 sim out and insert the Orange sim card ?

thanks, martin

You would need to give a months notice to cancel else they will continue to bill you.

Well that was weird.. I tried to play a podcast but the timer wouldn't move so i couldn't skip into the podcast at all. If i tried to it just restart but stayed on 0seconds like its paused.. Restarted the device and its no different :S

Also then i went onto youtube and it asked me to log in again.. though before i restarted the iPad i was logged in (it likes to do that sometimes)

well technologically they have, just not aesthetically or in the eyes of the non-tech savy public who believe ''its magical'' as a justifiable selling point

Technologically the N95 blew the first couple of iPhones away :p

The problem I can see with Android tablets is that at the moment they're just large Android phones. People joke about the iPad being a giant iPhone, but at least Apple tweaked the UI to suit the new form factor. Android tablets use the same marketplace, same apps and are basically large Android phones with or without a custom UI layer on top. Unless Gingerbread comes in tablet flavour I think Meego-powered devices will turn out better.

hehe

tbh no hardware maker worth a damn has made a android tablet so im still out on them in general. tbh with a few tweaks to widgets i cant see many problems with android on a tablet.

the only reason the ipad is joked about as a big iphone is the form factor and the OS...and the hardware....lol

if it ran OSX the distinction would be far more significant (and if we are honest more useful in general)
