*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

Not quite sure what you mean :S?

I just load up the mail app, my emails get downloaded when I have a connection. If i delete one when I check on Windows Live Mail its then been deleted. If i leave it alone it stays there.

Really? See thats the problem I have. If I access an email via POP it immediately deletes it from my Virgin Media account...

Well as i said i don't use the normal mail app:

http://fluentfactory.com/mboxmail/

though it seems like its only for hotmail accounts. My parents have a VM account (well ntlworld.com email) and that's weird. Can log in online and delete emails but well back on WLM on the pc the emails are still there so useless really...

Plus the website on the iPad is actually different then the website on my desktop (logging in website)

That's normal behaviour for a pop email account. Can it be configured as IMAP instead?

(as an aside, you can usually tell mail clients for pop accounts to leave a copy of the message on the server, but if you plan on using multiple clients/webmail in combination then IMAP is a much neater way of doing it)

oli - thanks.
Peter - So you think I should switch to IMAP on both my desktop and iPad?
But my concern is that I have to setup an archiving system otherwise it would mean that all my emails would still be effectively online (since there are some emails I keep for record keeping).

Just drag any emails you want to keep from your mail client to a folder on your desktop? You can certainly do this with mail.app

To be honest though, if the server were to die, just recreate the account and push all the emails back up from the client.

Well thats the thing I dont want to keep many emails on the server...
Whats this mail.app btw? An app for iPad?

Keep all of your emails on the server! Then whatever client that connects with it will all be in sync.

mail.app is an email client for OS X. I assume Outlook Express or Thunderbird or whatever you might use on windows would let you do similar.

Could any of you tell me how you have setup your desktop/iPad email system? Thanks :)

I do it this way :)

If you would like to receive your e-mail using multiple POP3 e-mail clients, you will need to make a slight change to the username settings in your e-mail clients. This change will instruct the mail server to deliver all messages that have been received in your account over the last 30 days, allowing you to download the same messages on multiple e-mail clients.

Simply add the word recent followed by a colon (:) in front of your current username. For example, if your e-mail username is [email protected], you would need to change it to recent:[email protected].

It keeps everything Virgin Server side & lets you download to multiple machine / accounts :)

Ooh I see... but what if you delete it from your local inbox. surely because its still there on the server it will download again ?

nope whenever you access your email from another machine it downloads it to that one only :)

badly explained :D

download & delete on machine A
.
.
.
can still download on machine B
.
.
.
.
go back to A, still gone :)

So you're saying that whether I downloaded and deleted it on machine A it will still download on machine B (even if I deleted it from my machine A inbox?)

I guess this is where IMAP comes into it when you want to clear out your inbox of any unwanted emails... so that wherever you access it from.. it updates automatically...

My gripe is just where to put my exisitng emails that I downloaded.... plus its a pain that you cant CREATE folders in the mail app on the iPad.

Cancelled order for Mifi on the phone... though next day sim came. But the modem got cancelled.

Went on-ine as i realised I could get a decent price from the NUS site. The discount didn't work so they told me to ring them.... Then they told me that there was no offer on -.-

So just went and bought the modem today, 8hours to charge :O! No idea how long battery lasts for..

Quite happy with my mifi actually. At college it changes signal and some youtube videos I can watch and some I can't. Managedto get 300kb/s using mxtube though to download a video. Loading web pages is ok. Got this 'H' signal aswell in a few places instead of 3G.

Got my griffin screen protector today:

Got it fitted fine, though I'm sure theres a bit of dust under the bottom left area of the screen. Otherwise its fine, a air bubble on the right hand side which I can't get rid off. But my case is in the way so no problem.

it feels rougher.. though its quite nice actually so thumbs up there. finger prints well.. I've been using all day and I don't need to clean it. Its extremely good for finger prints, they seem to just vanish if they appear.
It feels just as responsive aswell.

Got one problem though.. which I'm not too sure what to think about.
The screen looks a lot different now 'can't explain this at all'. The anti-glare I'm not sure if it will help or not either. But if the device is turned off and I try to use the device as a mirror you can only make things out just about.

Atleast you know it should never get scratched.. Don't understand how those test videos work though, when they get a screw driver and try to scratch it but they fail and other tools

How did you put the 'recent:' bit in the username on the ipad? - mine just says that the colon is an invalid character - or did you just put it in the PC?

I cut and pasted the ":" from when I was sending an email and then pasted it after I entered "recent" as it wasn't available on the keyboard.

These virtual keyboards are sometimes too clever for their own good. Then again, what the heck is putting "recent:" before your username all about too!
