*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

Well I use mine on the bus, only around 40 minutes. Lose connection at one point when going through town but that's it. Otherwise a few times it doesn't pick up a signal (a reboot fixes this)

Sigh, my jailbroken iPad being a pain.
Last night it was on charge with berry little battery. I was just browsing the Internet and screen just went black. Device had turned off.

As it's a tethered jailbreak I had to plug back into PC.
Though it keeps stopping the jailbreak process at same point.

Will have to just try to boot into DFU and iTunes later

EDIT: Fixed, forgot I had to run the jailbreak in Widows XP Service pack 2 compatibility

Grr. I'm sat at home ill and I'm sorely tempted to buy an Ipad.

I have so many things that I need to catch up on...like my CCNA and Java study, which obviously require books.

I'm in two minds whether I should buy the physical books or wait until I invest in an Ipad or e-reader (currently favouring an ipad).

How does an Ipad actually compare to an ereader?

If your main use is to read books and other material then buy the Kindle. Like oli356 has said above me, its way cheaper than an iPad.

On the other hand if you want something which gives you more features (Games, Web Browser, App Store etc) as well as a book reader then get the iPad.

Yes. I want to be able to browse or use the iPlayer app.

I'm not particularly bothered about reflections as I don't think I'll ever use it in the sun.

So does anyone actually use it as an ereader?

To me the main disadvantage of it as an ebook reader is the distraction factor of all the other things you can do it it.

While I'm happy to use it to read stuff, what I find is that I'll get a couple of pages into reading something, then I'll quickly check a web site, then I'll play a quick level of a game, then watch something on iPLayer, before long time has gone and I've not done any reading. Mind you this could be my fault and you may have a better concentration factor than me. I've read a number of books on it though, but they have taken a lot longer to read than if I had them in paperback.

Also before the iPad I used to own a Kindle DX, great piece of kit and great for reading. If reading is what you want to do, buy a Kindle.

Also check on Amazon/iBooks that the books that you want are available through the UK store. One thing that annoys me is that a lot of good books I want are only available in the good old US of A.

Hi folks :)

Was sat playing with my friends new iPad 16GB WiFi today and was quite disappointed tbf. For the money he paid £450 maybe more it seemed more like a gadget toy than anything else. Not to sound disrespectful but what’s the point in one? I have a good decent gaming Laptop all singing and dancing at it cost me the same price. I understand portability and the rest.

I suppose my main question are there any benefits over a similar priced Laptop? I bet it’s been asked numerous times so sorry in advance and feel free to ignore :)

To me, that's like asking if an apple has any benefits over a similarly-priced orange. They are two different categories of device, and 'benefits' depends entirely on what you want the device for. The iPad is really portable, easy-to-use and has great battery life and, optionally, integrated 3G. But if you want to play 3D games then, no, there's no point in it!

Read the posts above you. People taking about it just above you!

Thanks for that. It's nice getting an actual reply to a question, even if it’s been asked before. Hence my post.

Yes that’s true! He was using it for movies and well I’m not too sure what else! I have a 15’ MacBook Pro I use for professional Photoshop so I am not having a pop at apple, just don’t see what it can offer (to me) over a laptop. Guess I shall have a look at previous posts on here and check Google out.

The iPad as I see it is a 'third device'. Almost everybody I know who has one also has a laptop and a smartphone. A laptop is essential for many people, where an iPad is more of a luxury.

What it has to offer is the fact that it's NOT a laptop.

In the morning I sit in bed and watch the news while I browse on my IP4. It's not quite big enough...so the Ipad would be perfect. Also whilst eating breakfast I could quickly check the papers or such like.

Yes it's pure luxury - but what isn't?

Having just downloaded I player I'm finding it great at home, one thing though when working away I use my three wifi bb dongle and I play say it cannot run and need wifi? But it is running though wifi to the dongle ?

Any ideas or a workaround ?

A couple of us have noticed that, (thread for the app in Apple Software.

Weird, can't see it being a bug either tbh
