*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

Quick Q - im sure this was mentioned on x' page but no idea what one so.

What was the outcome about importing the iPad's from America. I've heard that you cant ship to a UK address from apples american shop. But if you got a friend to buy it or shipped to him, then he could ship to UK - (cant cost much surely). But then didn't they nail you with import tax or something :S?

If it's sent in to the UK odds are (99%) it will be hit with the relevant duty/tax. And ParcelForce/RoyalMail like to add their bit on top too.

If it's carried into the UK (in your hand luggage etc) and you walk down the green 'nothing to declare' isle odds are (99%) you won't be hit with the duty/tax. Though all the yanks on MacRumors will cry 'free healthcare' at you!

If you had a "friend" in the US then you wouldnt pay import tax as it would be classed as a gift then would it not? You didnt buy it from a retailer.

Correct me if im wrong though!

That would seem to make sence yer...Though i have no clue.. And how much would the import tax even be; must be a website what tells me (googles it)

Like i was looking @ the prices earlier and iirc the 16gb wi-fi only version was somewhat £90 cheaper. So wondering about the importing part :D

Im not sure if this is right but based on a shipping cost of $35 for a $499 iPad 16Gb Wifi its £60.67

The gift allowance in the UK is £37, so you'd pay VAT and Duty on an iPad still.

Given that the USA stores still don't have stock to just wander in ange get one, I'd be very surprised if we have decent stock at launch.

Anyone remember the iPhone 3G launch?
Going back to my friend that just got back from the States with one. He wondered in and picked one up...so guess it's just hit and miss.

One thing I do wonder is why didn't they make it widescreen?
I thought that, but having used one now I think widescreen would be a bit of an odd shape. I think you might feel like you were loosing screen space when doing anything other than watching movies. Tilt in to portrait mode and it would seem very narrow. As it is now it's perfect for web browsing etc IMO. It would only really work in widescreen if the resolution was higher AND the screen bigger, but then it would lose some of its size appeal.

Until I used it though, I was of the same opinion about it not being widescreen.

ok thanks,
so hardly worth importing it... Might save like £20/30 in end.. But for time it takes /sigh

Think one of my mates was going to America on the hols and considering getting one. I'll have to speak to him :). Surely by August they would have stock in the apple stores.

So im guessing a few of you have got them now? Was just wondering what your first thoughts are as i was going to get one now im saying i dont as ive got a 32gb ipod touch so need some reassuring lol......Also can i confirm i will have no problem with a US ipad being used in UK?..

Come the 28th I was just wondering how many posts in this thread will have

"this was posted from my iPad"
"this was posted from my iPad whilst in the garden"
"this was posted from my iPad whilst on the toilet"
"this was posted from my iPad whilst in bed"
"this was posted from my iPad <insert some random place>"

Most of the above from me I expect ;)
