*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

a smart phone is at least small enough to fit in a pocket if u need to go somewhere...an ipad needs a bag.

tbh its interesting to see fan boys justifcations for the product...(never seen such strong defence of the ipod or iphones intended function or uses tho, something to think about...)

anyway im not going to fuel the pro vs anti debate anymore, satisfied my curiosity.

I guess people are just so fat now a days they cant shift themselves into a chair infront of their pc from the sofa...sad times...sad times indeed.

Has it occurred to you that some people might not like to have to go sit in their office away from everyone else when they want to look up something quickly?

Or that some people sufficiently active they might leave the house and like to have their reference material (or just books) with them.

Now it might not be for you but surely it's not actually difficult to understand that some people might find it useful?

Because when I come in from those hard bike rides I may just want to chillout on the sofa?

Word just in from the judges:

Your condescending hit-and-run attempt failed due to lack of articulate points made.

A comment from that site

If it's that price for the basic version (Just WiFi and 16gig) then my money will deffo be going on an Archos 9

While the Archos 9 is quite interesting (I was looking at it a couple of months ago) new models ae coming out that make it look a bit dated, both with windows and more mobile oriented OS's (such as android and mobile OSX). Take a look at the Norton Ink and the Hanvon touchpads for two examples, both in totally different markets though.

The market was not there (the market has only been created since smart phones), they also cost twice what the Ipad does and have a full OS (which is a massive downside)

ebooks are cheaper starting from free and you can have many books/magazines on the device taking up no room.

So you never watch tv/films and browse at the same time. Hardly ideal sat at a desktop doing that. Or browse out of the house where a desktop is useless and a phone is again limited to a tiny screen.

it's payG no contract.

Whilst I agree with the former I disagree slightly with the latter part of the first paragraph. The market has got a lot bigger since smartphones became more mainstream (instead of business oriented) however one of the big issues with the older tablets (all 3ish of them if you don't include ones with keyboards) was that the tech wasn't there and they were firmly aimed at certain business niches (so expensive). We now have technology (in both mobile processor sense and ULV PC chips) to be able to produce low power devices that are still powerful enough to be used in every day life without having to charge every hour or so or spend over £1000. So yeah, a new market but also the technology to exploit that market efficiently.

For example the iPad, it has almost identical internals to the iPhone 3GS (same processor, same graphics and same memory) yet it is still powerful enough to run what 10 years ago could only have run on an expensive desktop. Same with most of the Android devices out/coming out (most run on either mobile chips or ultraportable netbook chips like the Trega 2). The creation of ULV processors that can still run a full OS and have power to spare in lightweight notebooks and netbooks has also been a revelation for powerful slates. How many Dell 13z's, macbook airs or Dell Adamos did we have 10 years ago? None. Now that same tech can be pulled from the laptop style chassis and stuck in a slate chassis without having an hours battery life or a massive machine.

It's an ipad copy and one I'm looking forward to. But not sure how that helps your argument, as it isn't out yet and costs the same and is basically the same.

Actually it's not, the iPad hadn't been displayed to the public when working copies of the MSI were out.:p

It may not have been released fully to market yet but it's certainly not a copy, more a twin.

What are you going to use usb for?
What are you going to use HDMi for?

USB: Plugging your camera straight in to the device instead of having to buy a seperate adaptor
HDMI: Apple have missed a trick here, these devices would be perfect for using as a media centre, plug the HDMI cable in and output 720/1080p video straight to your TV. You take your pad round to someones house and just share the media to a big screen. :) No doubt Apple will release an adaptor for the 30 pin port to output at least 720p video, however you then have another problem (as mentioned in the review above). You can only charge from a wall or sync to a computer, not both. So no chance of charging your iPad whilst watching something on the big screen... The lack of connectors does make the machine look sleaker, however there are drawbacks to it.

I imagine a dock would be better suited for charging at the same time as video out, and will likely appear soon.

I'm sure it's for old boardroom projectors or whatever, but it's displeasing to see VGA only on things like iPad and ultraportable laptops. It's pretty much legacy analog junk by now.

Agree. :)

However I'm sure I read somewhere that the iPad can only output 480p (or at least not 720/1080p) although it can play higher? Compared to the other devices out/coming out that is a major clanger that Apple should have sorted (and probably will for the next version, I guess if the 30 pin can take it).

couch surfing, reading books/comics, videos and apps.

It fits in a new bracket that nothing else covers.

Smart phones have a small screen.
Notebooks are big heavy, fold out.

Ipad fits in the middle, a simple turn on and use device. no maintenance, nothing to slow it down. Great UI.

having spoken to someone who got one for the couch surfing and reading books angle I can say that it's too heavy for doing this any length of time. after reading a book for a while you get quite bad wrist ache!

It outputs 480p using the existing component cables (unsuprisingly as it's not a 720p device) but outputs the full 1024x768 over VGA.

 it's lighter than a hardcover backed book, which is about 1/3rd of my books, what is he doing with it.

Ah ok, I wasn't going mad then. :p

However only 1024x768? Fine for presentations but not 720p (however maybe it still does 720p?)

Certainly looks like a very interesting device, The missus has a uMBP that i use for surfing the net daily, i could quite easily see this replacing something like that and freeing up the missus mac for her, a nice dock on the living room side with the ipad cycling family photos when not in use and then its a light handy sized pad to browse the net and keep me informed of crap as i like.
