*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

We'll not know the demand level in shops until tomorrow really.

Fair play to people going early, I really can't be arsed - just gonna wait for my pre-order to process (by 7th June).

I am up at 6:30, except for work, dont expect to get one at lunch time but i'll make the trip nevertheless. At least i'll get to see one in the flesh instore.

Don't suppose anyone is at or going to those purple shirts in Oxford?

Wondering if it's worth the trip down through the traffic and so on to get there. I won't bother if there is already a queue building up

Saw everyone outside purple shirt place this morning, only about ten people though, felt a bit smug and wanted to wave mine in front of their nose as I have it with me today.

Was gonna go in and get a camera connection kit actually but didn't have time.

This is why people hate those of us who own Apple stuff :p (apart from the odd iPod the iPad is my first "pretentious" Apple item)

Reminds me of the South Park episode where they all get the Prius and the smugness caused the bad weather cloud thing :D

Yes couldn't help feel like I would have been decked and/or robbed and perhaps would have deserved it! I know what you mean :D

Anybody recommend a good rubber case?

iPad condom

Bahh all this hype about iPad, it's like christmas. I know full well that it couldn't replace my MBP or my Mini.. but I find myself looking for ways to justify it:

* Second monitor on the move at work.. problem is that I think this app requires a driver installed on the PC/Mac and due to my work this isn't possible.

* No developer tools (Xcode) on the iPad.. there is on my MBP/Mini..
* No MIDI support in iPhoneOS for devices - couldn't support one of the applications I'm writing. Would have been just the right size to sit on a music stand in front of the kit. CPU performance is too low though.
* Could support nicely an app for the WiFi robot I'm developing but there's no money in that - it's return is in understanding the iPhone technology.
* Although the mini runs the development and I screenshare into it from the MBP (means I can sit anywhere or infront of the TV).. the MBP still allows me to take a copy of the source and develop on the move if I'm stuck somewhere uninteresting.
* MBP supports big external monitor screen resolutions, beyond 720p of the iPad. On-screen desktop space and multi-monitor is king with development..

* Could use it for reading books.. and sell my Sony book reader, possibly getting £50-75 for it to put towards the £499/599.
* Could use it for the book I'm writing.. the portability would be good although my MBP fits the rucksack just as well.

* Could use it to surf on the sofa.. but my MBP does that already with mail, safari, calendar, iWorks, mac:Office etc. With an SSD in it, it's faster than an iPad in surfing and doing tasks. iPhone does that for small things, ordering pizza etc.

* Surfin' on the Kazi - well my MBP/iPhone does that too already.

So it looks like I'm going to remain a MBP/iPhone man.. :(

There's no driving reason at the moment for upgrading my iPhone 3Gs to the new iPhone either :(

Now if they brought out a dual touch screen MBP (with an i5/7, 8GB, SSD) which replaced the keyboard with an onscreen keyboard that ran OSX then I may be tempted to replace the MBP.. That would be an insta-buy I'm afraid to admit :D

ok, no chance of getting an iPad on the way to work in Birmingham. Massive queue outside the Apple store and it goes all the way from the store to the entrance of the Bullring.

Will chance it at lunch time but i don't have much hope.

What PDF -> ePub converter are people using?

Tried Calibre and it just outputs the ePub in a crappy format with spacing everything and no images!

Did you tweak the settings in Calibre?

I haven't converted any real documents from PDF to epub. Just magazines, and in that case I only cared that it got the page numbers right. Couldn't give a stuff about TOC, but I know there are some crazy settings in there if you want to give it a blast.

I wouldn't give details of competitors. Even if you blank the name anyone could Google them and it's against the FAQ.

If anyone else breaks the forum rules their account will be suspended.

Don't take the mick, please.

Having just gone through the Australian iPad release today, I was surprised to find that a lot of other stores were also selling ipads on the day of release, which hadn't been hinted at earlier.

Had to feel sorry for all those people on the news who had camped outside of Apple stores for 30hrs, only to find that they could have rocked up at 8am and bought one nearly anywhere.

Is this the same in the uk?

I don't need competitors names, just a yes or no will do.
