What AV do you use?

Anyone else noticed Malwarebytes is running all the time? I tried a reinstall and unchecked the try trial but still running in trial mode. Was ok before today.

I did notice that a MBAM process was running in the background after the latest update when I shut it down after the first run, but it hasn't come back (and I think it was a research program that is included in the latest version) after I killed the process after the first instance.

Another warning to those that haven't upgraded avast to the 2015 version, you'll be forced into upgrading and most likely have to deal with the hell of having to get everything working properly.

Anti-virus which one?

Hey,

Not sure what anti-virus I should use as I mainly download and install and browse the internet on this PC.

I game a lot more than browsing the internet.
So I am looking for an anti-virus that's not heavy on CPU etc.

I used Avast for a while it was great but people are saying you should never use it since it gives you bad performance when playing games is this correct?

Thanks.

Sorry if this is the wrong section I cannot find a section for this.

Well, you should use anti-virus regardless if you play the game or not, in general turning off anti-virus helps to gain couple more FPS if your PC is weak but some AV products have something like Game Mode which could be turned on when you play games, I don't know what it does as I don't use one myself. Are you willing to spend some money on a Pro anti-virus or use the free one ?

best performing security is kaspersky but quite heavy in background i find, but for maximum protection its wins by far

personally i game a lot and have always used avg and bull guard on my sons rig all run pretty low usage in background, some claim to have a gaming mode personally i dont see what they do much when its on.

i would say try a few see what works for you as in security level vs background load most hhave trial versions on there web pages

but as stated avg works for me and never had a problem tbh and i dont see a impact on performance and i use a apu in my rig

if you are going with a free AV, I would suggest AVG Free Edition + MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (Free Version).

This Avast AV back in the day was pretty bad.

Tried them all pretty much and I find Norton 360 picks up more than the others imo. Was using MSE for some time before and its not much good. +1 for malwarebytes alongside. Used Avira for ages too and kaspersky paid for and both of them are alright. None of the others ive tried are worth a mention.

I like Bitdefender, seems pretty unintrusive. Coupled with Malwarebytes I've not had an issue yet.

I have tried nearly all the ones listed in the poll over the years however have not tried them at the same time period. I generally download trial versions and see how they perform to my needs before making a decision. Everyone has their preferences, the most important factor is you keep it up to date and allow it to scan.

I also do not mind paying for a good AV.

I'm using windows defender at the moment on my PC.

Does anyone suggest an AV I should install?

"Windows Defender for Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1 provides built-in protection against malware. You can't use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 8.1, but you don't need to—Windows Defender is already included and ready to go. But if you’re looking to protect a PC with an older version of Windows, you can use Microsoft Security Essentials to help guard against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It provides free* real-time protection for your home or small business PCs."

Been using MSE/Windows Defender since it was released but I've been reading more and more bad press about it. So now that I've finally got Windows 10 installed, I might make use of my free Kaspersky license and see how it goes.

Avast has lowest hit and beat them all at AV comparatives, http://www.av-comparatives.org/performance-tests/ , so Avast won,Emisoft second and Avira came third.
