Don't pay for one. Free versions which seem to get plenty of praise are 360 Total Security, Nod 32, AVG, Avira &, as mentioned, Avast. There are plenty more too. I found 360 to be good.

What's the spyware scanner of choice these days? I use Spybot Search & Destroy because it changes the HOSTs file to make web browsing a bit safer, but I am open to suggestions

Malwarebytes.

Your web browser should have malicious site filtering built-in. Spybot's approach is always going to lag behind until it updates the hosts file.

I use Kaspersky Pure with a 5 device licence, since I like the fact that I can lock down internet access etc. for other users in the house.

It means I don't have to do GPO work at home... haha...

Used Windows Defender in the past, and have just yesterday bought a 2 yr sub to Malwarebytes to accompany Windows Defender.

On a side note, does anyone know of a spyware or malware (browser based possibly) that could stop Speedtest's download portion of the test to not complete??. Had issues with my Virgin Media internet connect and contact virgin and they rep on the phone said that the reason Speedtest wasn't completing was because i had spyware installed on my browser (google chrome). Any weight to this at all?

Avast free is great anyway, the paid version is honestly pointless. Windows Defender on Windows 10 however does a very good job, haven't felt the need to install another.

You don't need to install AV. Just don't click email attachments or download random junk.

I've used Bitdefender for about 5 years. It's pretty much the best.
