Well finally got round to finishing Railgun today. Been quite busy recently so my viewing rate has been a lot slower than a few months ago.

What can I say not a bad series, but like index something about the plotting and pacing isn't quite my cup of tea, as there are parts where I was really enjoying it but other parts where I was getting a little bored, probably because its a series that can spend a lot of time on filler esque material that only vaguely touches on the underlying main plotline.

Credit where credit is due though, the cast are likable and in Mikoto's case, once again JC Staff have pulled off a tsundere esque character who actually has a bit of depth and is really quite likable, following hot on the heels of both Taiga and Shana.

The cameos by the index characters who didn't feature in Railgun were also not overused and were always quite enjoyable little segments when they did occur.

Will be moving on to Index 2 next and seeing how that fares!

Finished re-watching series 2 of Maria-sama earlier ... been a while so it was nice to be reminded of a few things I had forgotten from the middle of the series. Wouldn't be to the taste of most here but I like it.

Started re-watching Birdy the Mighty with is a very good action series ... I'm watching the US release but I see that Manga UK have it coming out in two parts in July and September for £15 each which is a bargain ....

Finished watching the girl who leapt through space. Was pretty decent, a nice light hearted story to watch. I must say I loved Leopard in it, very funny character.

I then went on to watch Eden of the East, and the 2 films after the series. That was quite different, in some ways I would say it would make a good first anime to watch.

Anyone know any good animes for me to watch now? After something with an epic story, ie Clannad style. Though I have already seen Air and Kanon so I am not too sure what to look at really. At the moment all I'm watching is Nichijou and Tonagura which both are quite light hearted things. I am after something to really get into.

I think you'd like Eureka Seven. It has the romance side of Clannad with an interesting story and set of characters.

Or Toradora.

*Awaits the Spice & Wolf brigade* :p

.....although it is good.

if you liked leopard you'd like code geass, same actor plays lelouch (main character) in the 2 series and to be honest the character's personality isn't that much different :)

Having said that I highly rate eureka seven (series not the film) and would easily put it in my top 5

Ghost in the shell, rahxephon, shakugan no shana and rozen maidens might be worth a look too...

That's worth bearing in mind knowing the main character in code geass. Yeah I have also seen Ghost in the shell 1 and 2. I should really get round to watching Akira one of these days....

Toradora would probably go well ... but going on from The Girl Who Leapt Through Space maybe a slightly more serious sci-fi series like Macros Frontier?
Other possibilities .... Birdy The Mighty Decode or KiddyGrade ... all three of these have really good storys.

Or of course you could go for something completely different like A-ri-a (without the hypens ... it's a forum filter thing) ... very laid back story about a group of girls training to be gondola tour guides on a terraformed Mars ... it's supposed to be a relaxing anime but the third series, well if you can get through it and still be in one piece emotionally then you are better than me ...

I'm currently up to the last disk of a rewatch of Birdy at the moment and really enjoying it again ...

*Awaits the Spice & Wolf brigade* :p

I'm without the internet at home this week to even defend myself! :(

But yes it is very good (although marmite), largely down to the characters themselves, as they're excellently written characters, with some of the most depth I've come across in an anime.
Kallen and Lelouch in Code Geass are also voiced by the same pairing who do Lawrence and Holo of Spice and Wolf :)
(Jun Fukiyama and Ami Koshimizu - the english dub is good but not to the same standard)

As for personal recommendations, beyond the obvious (Not included Kanon,Clannad,AB for obvious reasons):

Beck - follows a band through its formative stages on and through ups and downs expected of a real band. Great dub too.
Chrno Crusade - starts off a bit basic/formulaic, but it's the ending and final few episodes that make it worth it
Deathnote - not a personal fan, but it is a good story. First half definately far better than the second though. Not going to explain why as its a spoiler in some senses.
Elfen Lied - not so much epic as fairly extreme. A lot of mature content and themes, such as gore, nudity, implied child abuse, what it is to be human, inner demons
Fullmetal Alchemist - (Both series). I haven't seen FMA:Brotherhood, but the first series was pretty solid, and reasonably long. Both versions do different things better (as Brotherhood is a retelling). Basically the whole plot springs from the love of children for thier mother. One of the western crossover successes that's probably justified.
Fullmetal Panic! - Just fun. Simples. Series one is a mix, Fumoffu is pure comedy, Series 2 is also a mix, but a bit darker and dryer than S1.
Higurashi - Damned confusing and a little creepy at times...but definately worth a watch, although ignore season 3/OVAs. You'll need to complete both S1/2 before you get the full story.

Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars I, II and III - You wanted 'epic', you got epic. This series focuses on a small snapshot, taken out of a wider universe at war. Very interesting once you get into it, and, at 3 seasons and a few OVAs, pretty long, without becoming 'OMG! WHY WONT YOU END!!'

Black Lagoon - Just so much fun. Revy - **** you, Rock! Yeah, I'll leave it there :D Oh and one of the few series where the English dub is the best version. The mangaka actually went on record saying its a series that should be in english all considered.

Rosario + Vampire - Slightly different recommendation here. Watch the S1 anime, find out if the premise interests you...then dump the anime and go read the manga, as after you rough out the formative period of the manga, it gets a whole lot better than the anime ever manages :) Oh and Nana Mizuki + Rie Kugiyama [in a role where she doesn't sound like stereotype Rie Kugiyama all the time]

I always consider it marmite (and yes I've found people who don't like it), because the reviews tend to reflect that, in that they're either quite negative or extremely positive.

It can be a bit slow, and dry, and won't appeal to audiences interested in action, however what makes it great is the strength of Lawrence and Holo, both in terms of character and in terms of writing and interplay between the two, but that won't interest everyone.

Lets be fair, following the world of a medieval trader is a somewhat a-typical setting, and given how much his career influences the story at times, this can be both a boon and turn off in terms of audience.

Kinda similar to most action movies, critics tend to hate them, but a section of the viewing market loves them :)

Well i can't wait for book 4 to come out next month, seems like another series is less and less likely now so the only way to continue the story is to read :p

Not to be confused with Marimite (common short reference to another anime series which Andarial and myself like). UP finally listed seasons 1 and 2 of Spice and Wolf on BD overnight so pre-ordered them both earlier this morning :)

Finished re-watching Birdy last night. Very good series with a nice mixture of sci-fi, action, drama and a very little comedy at times. There is one over-arcing story over the entire 26 episodes but there is a definite first and second half to it, (first half is dealing with a problem, the second half with dealing with the people who caused the problem). It is actually listed as two series on Wiki but Funi's release treats it as one longer series. Manga Entertainment are releasing it in two parts in July and September at there £15 price point per part.

It can be a little violent and gory at times but is nowhere near as extreme as other series. OPs and EDs are reasonable and I like the slightly melancholy piano BGM which crops up from time to time. The series ties up most of the loose ends but does leave things open for further series' in the future, (there is a series of manga which follows on but that hasn't be licensed or animated). I'd recommend the series.

Started watching series three of Koihime Muso, Shin Koihime Musō: Otome Taira, for some nice silliness to counteract Birdy ... :)

Well if UP is listing them too that's a good sign. I'm waiting til they come out s2 dvd before ordering though as money is a little tight right now as I'm saving for a holiday and also I'm interested to see what cut of the last episode they used, as they made an edit between tv broadcast and Japanese bd.

On the plus side I'm glad its sold well enough for them to solicit a bd release as despite the change in art between the series its rarely ugly.

Thanks for all these suggestions, will make a note of them for when I am in need of anything else new. :)

My opinion of Nichijou has changed, I am starting to enjoy it much more, so much so I now actually look forward for the next one to be released!

Not been watching much else apart from this seasons stuff, although i decided to rewatch a bit of Stand Alone Complex on a whim the other day, it still oozes with style. I really wish I.G. would hurry up and do a 3rd Gig/Season.

A-Channel - i don't know why, probably because had every cliche available. But i have to say, it's grown on me, it's silly and stupid. It also seems to have an insert song every other episode.

Ano Hana - . It does seem to be a bit of a slow burner, but the characters are interesting.

HanaSaku Iroha - Very entertaining to watch, although it also seems to be a bit of a slow burner. The production values are top notch though, it's a very nice looking series.

Denpa Onna - I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this series, it just seems completely random, the characters are kind of interesting though. I wonder if it will actually go anywhere, or carry on being completely random.

Those four, plus Bridge to the Starry Sky, are the this seasons stuff that I'm really still following (although I think I'm one or two episodes behind on all of them at the moment so need to catch up this weekend).

Of the five I'd rate them:

Iroha > Ano Hana > Bridge > A Channel > Denpa

I think Denpa is loosing out for me for the reasons that you've said ... it's just to strange at the moment so we just don't know what's going to happen moving forward.

Iroha is very. very good though ...

Others this season are still (probably) ok but there's a limit on what I can normally keep up with as airing series and I'm over that already so they'll have to wait till I can watch them when they are finished as a marathon.

A minor woot, Utena set 1 has shipped from TRSI (about 3 weeks early) :)

I'm debating the wagnara set as well.

Yep, I saw that Utena had appeared on UP's RSS feed of new releases which means they should get it sometime this week, (it normally appears there about the same time TRSI ship out to their customers).

Wagnaria is a pretty nice little series so if you didn't get the premium edition then the upcoming standard release may well be worth a punt, (the same with the standard Toradora sets).
