Just finished watching Appleseed XVIII
Action as you would expect from Duenan and co.:)
Was not really impressed with the graphic quality, was hoping for better in this day and age.Set after the events of the 2 films(can`t say about the manga as i have not read any yet )
Will be picking up the second ep at least to see if i am going to like it :)

Finished a quick re-watch of Kanamemo earlier. Short and silly but nice. A time filler really until I could get back into the office today and pick up Angel Beats on BD :) That'll be started tomorrow.

Also picked up the first volume of the Wandering Son manga. Definitely think I prefer the aime to the manga, it's feel and art style work a lot better with the story. The manga is a nice production though. A large format hardback publication, it feels good and solid. it also has quite a long, in depth, explanation of Japanese honorifics and name usage which is a lot more expansive than the usual terse definitions you find in most manga volumes.

Edit: Decided to take the 'lighter' option, having just finished Basilisk and watching Durarara as well. Started Omamori Himori. It's not particularly big or clever; and it's a harem show which usually goes hand in hand with not big (well...in some ways) or clever.

Based on your post above i burned through Omamori Himori on YouTube today. Has all the stuff i like, Harem, Fan service, Romance (althrough not explict, they're probably saving that for season 2) And a hot girl with cat ears. :p

Am really looking forward to Fate/Zero, decided to pick up another type-moon anime Kara no Kyoukai on Blu Ray. Only ordered this from Japan two days ago and it arrived this morning! Such a nice boxset.

I've seen the first two films of the Kara no Kyoukai set and, whilst they were extremely well animated, I didn't really find them to be my cup of tea.

I was tempted by the US BD release at the beginning of the year but in the end other things took priority.

Now that is nice, out of curiosity do they have English subs?

Just finished watching Kiddy Grade and nearly finished Burst Angel. I might start watching Gosick this weekend.

That's fair enough. Things do start to make a lot more sense as it progresses though.

I will eventually get around to watching the other films to give it a full chance. I do tend to go back and watch things again which I didn't get on with, and not actively dislike, the first time as tastes change over time and due to mood.

It does look a very nice set though (I couldn't see your pictures earlier due to most imagehosts being blocked at work).

Glad you enjoyed it. I think I actually probably prefered it to Asobi ni Iku Yo, but then that's probably simply for a couple of the connections and the themes.

I've seen far worse; but like I mentioned previously, it's not particularly my favourite sort of show; but it did fill the gap as a lighter watch :)

@Strife

That is indeed a very nice package. Sometimes you can see why the Japanese versions cost more than US (although the price difference can be a little hard to stomach), they do tend to be a lot more heavily presented and come with a lot more extras.

Is there nothing new or accessible in Anime anymore? Do you guys have any recommendations?

Some of my faves are:-

GITS
Patlabor
Cyber City Oedo 808
Death Note
Street Fighter
Blood - Last Vampire
Princess Mononoke (did not think much of Spirited Away although may have to revisit)
Akira
Cowboy Beebop

I'm sure there must be others but I have probably forgotten. Nothing is leaping out at me in the same way these did though.

I'm also in the early stages of fantasisation of doing my own animation (not neccesarily anime style), do you guys know much about the techniques used, can point me to some good online documentaries, or maybe just enlighten me to some good 3D software? It would be primarily based in traditional animation. I really liked the look of Blood when it came out, it blew me away.

Also Kenji Kawai and Yoko Kanno are mega inspirational composers. Any more?

Cheers.

There are lots of new and accessible series, and movies, which come out every year ... just not all of them are probably to your taste ...

Looking at some of the things you like our tastes probably differ some what but I would note that you probably like the King of Thorn movie and that there is a new series recently started airing in Japan called Blood-C which I think is related to Blood - Last Vampire.

Blood C is completely different to blood last vampire, it's a new variation on the theme. You may like it but just be aware it is different. Blood+ is a bit closer to the idea of blv though.

I'd say look at:
claymore
eureka seven
desert punks
bubblegum crisis tokyo 2040 (it's newer)
trinity blood
dance in the vampire bund (maybe)
blood brothers (maybe)
deadman wonderland
Mnemosyne

Probably more so go to my anime list and use their recomendations for other ideas too :)

Software - anime studio, 3ds max, maya (gits used this iirc)

Finished watching Angel Beats on BD last night. It was a better series than I remembered, (no doubt helped a bit by the official translation which apparently makes the ending feel slightly less rushed compared with other ::cough:: versions). Looks and sounds good on BD.

One thing it doesn't include is the other epilogue extra ... which having seen isn't really any great loss. It does include the OVA though.

Also, after watching the live action film the other weekend, watched the Space Battleship Yamoto Revival animated movie. Thought that it was a pretty good film ... not amazingly good plot wise but still and enjoyable watch.

Also caught up on various things this afternoon, still thinking that Usagi Drop is one of my favourites from this season.

Will be starting on the second half of Maid-sama later on ...

Oddly enough, with Angel Beats, I found the Other Epilogue scenario that's presented somewhat interesting. It definately laid the potential for another series one day; and also gave a circle of reincarnation sort of feel, which suits the series given it's theme. Given it's theme, it also suggests what Otonashi might have gotten up to before dissapating and being reborn himself.

The OVA I found...a little silly form what I remember.
I'd imagine it looked rather nice on BD though, it was always a reasonably nice looking series; and like I've said a few times, I did like the soundtrack, just a shame the official US BD release isn't a 'complete' set so to speak.

I just thought the other epilogue bit was rather pointless. You already have the reincarnation feel from the very end of the last episode and all this really did was allow for more episodes, which I doubt will happen.

Really all missing it out does is mean that people, who wouldn't have bought it anyway, will attempt to justify their position by its omission.

Re Angel Beats the BD had a dub right? What was your opinion of it?Was it ok or really bad like K-on!...Shudders at remembering :(
Been watching Rideback on dvd this weekend.I liked the dub on this :).Anyone got the BR version? Is it worth getting over the dvd version?

Just finished the dvd release of Starship Operators this evening,Started this ages ago when it first aired only got about halfway through then.Again i thought that the dub version was quite well done (in my opinion of course )
Would like to see a second season of this

I've been managing to watch a couple of hours of stuff a night, which means i'm now about half way through Ouren which I'm really enjoying :)

**************SPOILER - HIGHLIGHT TO READ******************

Ah, I kinda liked the fact that it hit back upon the point that they didn't pass on until they'd achieved thier goals or dreams. Otonashi was left behind at the end, because he'd never quite managed to achieve that sense of completion or happiness unlike the others.

The 'Another Epilogue' suggests that he did so by effectively taking Kanade's place in another cycle; and thus eventually achieving his own peace and reincarnation. (Otonashi's fundamental goal seemed to have been to help others achieve peace which is why he'd trained to be come a doctor before his death, following his own sense of helplessness over his Sister's death, reinforced further by his experiences, and the goals and he'd shared with Kanade)

The series had always left that question open about how he managed to move on; and by offering the Another Epilogue scenario, the series answered the question. The oh he just dissapeared at a later date seemed a bit weak given he was the main character. Perhaps it was an answer that didn't need giving, but it was nice to see in some ways nonetheless.

Except that with the new translation you comments about the last episode are not correct.

He has achieved that several episodes previously but wants to help the others and the very last scene (which may be after the credits I can't remember) indicates that he then does.

(I could explain more with spoilers but I don't have time now to look up the colour code)

All the extra does now is either produce a continuity hole with the main episode or imply that he has returned there again, with all that indicates, and that he hopes to see her there again, whihc is doubtful given what that would indicate.
