The AMD Driver Thread

Much appreciated. Primary thought is whether performance for Project CARS 2 degraded as of 22.5.2 (introduction of DXXP driver for NV2X).

Cheers

I didn't have time to make/upload another video to YouTube, but I did record the same race, then play it in its own window next to the YouTube video and I saw no difference beyond run-to-run variance between 22.3.1 and 22.5.1.

I also didn't "feel" a difference between the two. I think I'll still stick with 22.3.1 until the new stuff gets sorted.

This might have the same issue on Automobilista 2 as that runs the project cars 2 engine. I haven't played it for a couple of months but if I get chance tonight I will give it a run and see if that also has this performance drop off issue. See if it affects more then one game and system setup.

I have tried automobilista 2 tonight in both dry and wet (known cars and tracks) and I get a similar result to Twinz, however I haven't been getting the big reprojection spikes seen in that video. In the dry I used to average between 6ms and 7ms with this driver 8 and 9ms with the occasional 10ms, but it is still a fairly stable frametime. In the wet without loads of cars around I used to be 8ms to 9ms but on this driver 10ms to 11.5 with lots of reprojection. The reprojection is also flaky in when it triggers and was getting quite a lot of 60fps (headset is 90fps native) so didn't feel great until reprojection kicked in.
What I have noticed though is lower CPU time, on older driver normally around 6ms but now about 4ms so seems like the overhead for the CPU is reduced in the latest driver.
My system hasn't changed clocks etc for a long time now and always use the same profiles in the AMD driver.
I will submit a bug report too on this and hopefully some fixes in the next version, fingers crossed.

My AI test race is at a track where shadows are difficult in two spots. It's a worst-case (for dry, daytime racing) scenario I used to find how far I could push settings and still have a little headroom.

That's probably why I got the big chuncks of >11ms frame times. The old driver was able to hold 90fps, but there are two spots on the track where it uses most of its headroom doing so. The new driver starts with considerably less headroom, so the same tough spots are much more obvious.

*edit* not sure what is going on with the lonley spikes at the start. The stuff that got my attention while driving starts around 1:26.

Package Contents

The AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.8.2 installation package contains the following:
  • AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 22.8.2 Driver Version 22.20.19.09 for Windows® 10 and Windows® 11 (Windows Driver Store Version 31.0.12019.9007).

Updated my son's RX480 build from 22.5.1 to 22.8.2 due to consistent nagging from Fortnite that the driver had known issues - game now almost instantly freezes in the lobby :(

Do I really need to downgrade all the way back to 22.2.2 (which I think was the version epic were recommending?). Surely one of the most popular eSports games shouldn't have issues outstanding for this long

The new opengl drive is great from a performance perspective but there's an annoying issue where I can't alt-tab (it loses focus, but a frozen picture of the game remains), so I have to like switch to windowed mode (alt-enter). It's like this in the windows preview driver, 22.7.1, 22.8.1, 22.8.2. Works fine with older drivers but their performance is terrible in OGL.
