The AMD Driver Thread

Why haven't they fixed this yet? As a VR user myself I'd would imagine it's really putting some people off buying AMD cards who otherwise might consider them strong contenders.

@LtMatt if I recall correctly, you're an AMD guy aren't you? What are they playing at not fixing this yet?
@AMD_Vik Also do we think AMD is going to release that untapped potential from 7900 cards? Bit like how they did a driver unlock on the 5700 series to match the 2070super etc?

This was the reply by AMD_Vik the other day about the issue in the 7900XTX owners thread:

Yes, this will be in an upcoming major release. We're pushing to get this out ASAP, but unfortunately, I can't comment on exactly when this will be available

Looks like it might be fixed in this preview driver, hopefully the fix will come in the next main line release...

Excellent news. @uscool finally! Enough to tempt for a good price?

I was going to wait for the 4080 price to drop down in the $800 range before considering it for backup rig but the XTX is getting there now. If it can compete with the 4080 in VR the way it does in pancake gaming, I may go that route

Do we have any idea when the next drivers from AMD will be released and if they'll be any more stable? I bought a 7900XT a few months back and get frequent crashes where the entire system locks up including peripherals. And typically I find drivers are uninstalled on reboot and I have to reinstall from scratch. This isn't during gaming but is during medium GPU use as I have been trying some ML loads. I'm on 23.5.2 currently. I don't care about bleeding edge, I just need my system to be stable so I can work. Do they do any "professional" drivers which are more stable or anything like that? I'm on the verge of returning the card or selling it. It's no good to me like this.

This happened to me until I changed my 850w psu over to another 750w and RMAed the original one. Corsair found it faulty and sent a new 850w.

I have a 7900xt MBA which has been flawless since.

I was so close to returning and someone suggested trying another psu and I happened to have a spare one.

I have wondered if the PSU might not to be up to the job... but it should be? I have an 850w Seasonic supply and I'd have to go and find the box or open up my PC but I recall it being Platinum standard. It's never had to supply this much before I admit but I used a PSU calculator (https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator) for my system and it tells me I need "728W PSU" so my 850W should give me some margin to spare. I think the PSU is around... five or six years old, iirc.

I do have something of a thirsty system. Let me know if it sounds like I've skimped on PSU:
Threadripper 1920x (not overclocked, I'm boring)
64GB RAM (4x 16GB DDR4)
7900XT GPU (not overclocked)
4x 7200RPM SATA HDs
2x SATA SSDs
3x NVMe SSDs
1x Western Digital PCI-e SSD (it's two NVMes in a RAID)
4x fans 90mm / 120mm

I will be doing a new build in the near future for which I will need a new PSU. It wouldn't be the end of the world to get the PSU early and try it out. I'd prefer not to if it's a long-shot, though.

EDIT: Running Windows 10 fwiw.

That’s what I thought too. Mine was rm850x and was only 1 year old- turned out it was not coping with 400w spikes from the 7900xt

Hmmmm. You know what? Given the circumstances that I have an upcoming build I'll need it for anyway, I'll get a new PSU before I take any drastic actions. Maybe put it in this weekend if I can find the time.

I'd like to get another Seasonic just to not have any headaches of mixing up cables. They're looking a bit pricey, though. I could get a Gold one but prefer higher grade. Thanks for the advice.

@uscool helped me troubleshoot my system and thanks to him I swapped my psu out and have a working 7900xt.

Did it suddenly start happening when you installed the 7900xt ? I guess so because the build doesn't look new so guessing you already had GPU before and was fine ?

It's Windows so obviously there was the occasional crash. :) But to answer properly, pretty much. I had frequent crashes whenever booting up a game initially but then someone informed me that I was a doofus that you're not supposed to run the GPU off a single cable even if that cable has two headers (so why does it have two?). I fed it off two cables and it was much better thereafter but still sporadic crashes whereas before the 7900XT system was very solid. The past couple of weeks I've been having more frequent crashes. It can run fine all day but if I start firing up some GPU-intensive ML tasks, it has a high likelihood of crashing, sometimes several times in a row until I give up on my current task. The specific type of crash is screen will go black, keyboard remains functional for a very short time after as determined by being able to put numlock light on and off but then will freeze. Oddly enough I can sometimes still talk to my computer over the network and it'll respond, e.g. network shares.

It also has started doing something slightly worrysome which is that the screen will freeze, go black, then come on again after a second.

Exactly what mine did. On load it crashed. In certain scenes on games eg TLOU etc

When you mention it improved using 2 saperate cables it makes me think PSU , how much power does Threadripper 1920x even use during gaming ?

Do you have anymore PCIe slots on PSU just to try instead? Or does it only have 2 ?
