The AMD Driver Thread

Iirc isn't it first year OcUK then his after that his? Does it happen all the time or after a long gaming session? My 7970 would do similar when I had it overclocked - someone said it could be VRM temps creeping up. Try cleaning out the cooler with compressed air and making sure you have enough air getting into your case...

Started happening in GTA after only 10 minutes or so, case has pretty decent airflow with two 140mm intake fans. Even had the side of the case off the last couple of days and the card was cleaned recently.

I was told to come here by @Daftbrown after posting it on the GTA V thread as having issues with this game and installing the AMD drivers...

I've lost how many times I've uninstalled and re-installed the AMD Cat drivers,
actually, now re-checking it... I can't even get the 15.4 drivers installed keeps saying 14.12, if I go the DDU route it wouldn't let me install clean the 15.4 drivers, it would say doesn't exist.. so ended up installing 14.12 first.

everytime I try doing the 15.4 from fresh it won't let me???

My System Specs:
Intel i7-3930K CPU @ 3.20GHz
64GB RAM
Windows 7 Pro
Crossfire x2 - R9 290x (8GB)
Corsair 1200W PSU
Asus ROG - RAMPAGE IV EXTREME Motherboard
x4 Dell Monitors running in Daisy Chain

all standard (not overclocked) dunno where to start if I did.
currently looks like this -

when I have been playing GTA V in crossfire the game randomly drops frames and I'm getting 20-30FPS in crossfire, if I run just single card runs 30+FPS no problems at max (just not eyefinity max on single card)....

any advice please?

My personal preference would be to do a full reinstall of windows. The minute I have to contemplate using a driver cleaner usually means my windows needs refreshing. Have sat for days trying to fix silly little issues to no avail when what I should have done was reinstall which if you have decent Internet and stuff backed up takes a couple of hours and should fix the problem.

As to your problem I don't know as drivers usually install first time with no problems for me. Nice setup you have hope you get this resolved soon.

I have to agree with 'TheRealDeal' sometimes the easiest and often quickest way is to just blow Windows away and start fresh.

Out of interest what Monitor stand do you have? I've currently got two Dell U2414h monitors (which if I'm not mistaken is what you have) and I'm looking at buying a third and getting a monitor stand for them.
But I want a good looking stand that doesn't cost the earth...

I dont think in this case a reinstall of windows will do any good. This is an issue many experience even after a fresh install. A friend of mine is quite sad cause he just bought 2x290s to play GTA V in its full glory yet get worse performance in crossfire than with just 1 card. He tried reinstalling, he tried different driver sets and nothing has helped. I dont know where the issue is, could be a specific windows update, could be drivers or could be the game. I just hope for you crossfire peeps that it gets fixed soon.

I just had a strange thing happen. I updated Windows (8.1) and did the restart after update as usual but after the reboot the resolution was very low then a dialog box popped up saying no display driver installed? I have never had that issue before, has it happened to anyone else?

It happened to me last week. I just restarted my PC and it went back to normal. Not happened again since.

The main issue he is having is not being able to install the 15.4 driver which is the Gta V driver. If a driver is not installing it's usually a problem somewhere in windows. With a proper installed 15.4 he should then get crossfire performance. Crossfire seems to be working very well in Gta 5 but as with any game there are those that will have problems.

That setup looks amazzzzing  what monitors exactly do you have and why so many ?

I've been thinking of adding a 4th monitor, to run say online TV, or just have the desktop on it.

But how does that work with eyefinity, do you have to run games in windowed mode or can you still have full screen and the 4th monitor still visible and useable?

Having a 4th screen works very well with Eyefinity - when you set up an Eyefinity Group, you simply select 3x1 as the configuration and then select which 3 you want in the Group. The 4th one can then be added as an Extended desktop monitor so Windows "sees" 2 x monitors attached (one at 5760x1080 or whatever, and one at 1920x1080). I have Afterburner's OSD running on my fourth monitor while playing games on the main 3.

The issues I found were in some games having issues recognising how your system is set up - in LA Noire, the game went to Vert- where it should detect an Eyefinity setup automatically, and Alien Isolation wouldn't display any menu when started up. I moved my fourth monitor from the GPU onto the Intel onboard graphics, and both game issues were fixed next time I ran them. This is why my "extra" monitor is run from the onboard - I simply found this less problematic in some games than I did when the GPU was powering it.

Yes, there are many people having this same issue with crossfire 290s and GTA V. It seems most prevalent for those running lower resolutions at high frame rates, there is something limiting two GPUs being utilized correctly.

A single 290 on the modest settings I use maintains 90-100fps and is very smooth, enabling the second card causes constant freezing and drops to ~30fps and the GPU usage is never above 35-45%. Using a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and the 15.4 beta driver. The most recent ~350Mb patch seems to have made this worse also.

Hmm I have just noticed that after the Windows update corrupted my driver and after removing the last traces with DDU and reinstalling drivers the clock speeds on all GPU's has been set really low, 505 core 625 mem on the 295x2 and 515 core and 625 mem on the 290x. Weird.

I'd do a full windows re-install if I had major problems, but I have way too much on my computer and not enough time to think about doing it all, I will wait till windows 10 is out before that.

I have the same monitors and the best floating stand is - Ergotech Quad 1 Over 3 Desk Stand - they do cost a lot, £270 but it was worth it for me, I will buy another arm at some point and go x6 monitor setup ;)

I agree, I've seen people with crossfire working and others not, no fresh install would really help because I could do all this and then still happens...

I'm sure I'll find away to fix it, if not... guess it's playing GTA V on one card.

I'll keep trying different methods and see if I'm able to install 15.4 on it's own after a fresh DDU wipe, I do it in safe mode but on install after re-boot it comes up saying cannot install and problems.

That setup looks amazzzzing  what monitors exactly do you have and why so many ?

I actually have x6 of these monitors but my wife is using two on her setup (well... more of my other PC) I'd have x6 on mine but my roof is in the way so I would have to move desks around. I love these Dell U2414H monitors.

also I use them for my work and gaming (I'm freelance photographer)

Has anyone experienced what I can only describe as "lines" or "grid lines" in games. I had it happen when I was using 6970's (mainly on World of Tanks) but it still happens on my 290's. It has done it with 2 different monitors as well. The only other "significant" game that it happens with is Dayz but I've just started playing Survarium and it seems to do it in that. I will try to get a screenshot of it but I'm not sure if it will show up.

Edit: you can see it in this screenshot (look just to the left of the steps), although its much worse here than other games i think

I was awake till 1:30am last night trying different ways to install 15.4 Cat, but ended up just installing the 14.2 and will leave it like that till official release.

I can live without it atm.

So there seem to be a lot of conflicting opinions, does gta v work with crossfire or not? I'd be running it on 2 x 290 with some vsr and a 3930k at 4.5...

Yes it works very well and this is using QuadFire. If QuadFire works well, then you can bet regular Crossfire will be top notch, because the more gpu's you add the more complex it becomes.

These are my go to settings currently, that offer the minimum amount of stutter. There is a little bit every now and then while driving, game bug it seems, but on the whole it's very smooth.

I have plenty of grunt spare to run higher settings, but i found this mix to work best for me at the moment until future game patches come out.

Tessellation is set to very high.

The above settings offer me 60FPS locked Vsync, with gpu usage around 50-60% per gpu.
