The AMD Driver Thread

Aside from drivers always being late the "ready when its ready" BS makes it seem like we the consumer should be grateful to AMD when they do finally release a driver that lets us use the hardware we've purchased at considerable cost.

Guys try this to improve Witcher 3 performance significantly with Hairworks on.

In CCC set the Tesselation Mode to 'Override Application Settings' snd set the Maximum Tesselation Level to 8x instead of the original 64x. If you set it to low then Geralt and the horse look bald.

This will reduce the amount of hair tesselation thus improving performance. I can now run the game on ultra with Hairworks enabled and get 60fps most of the time on my crossfire setup.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There seems to be some strange bug that gives slow performance when you first start the game. To get improved performance I have to go to the graphics options and change shadows from ultra to high, go back into the game and then back to options and change the setting back to ultra or whatever it was before.

This improved the fps from 45fps to 60fps. For some reason you have to do this every time you load the game even if the settings have been previously set.

Has to be said this driver business is getting to be a bit of a **** take (and this is coming from someone with no interest in the witcher). And as usual no communication from amd as to why they've not released a driver or what the current delay is.

I really think they need to bring back the CAP profiles, they seemed to be able to release those pretty fast and it would certainly be quicker than having to wait for an entire driver to become available.

At this point i really have to wonder whats going in with amd's driver team, from being able to put out 12 qualified drivers a year not so long ago (and also betas and hot fixes) to not even being able to give a driver release estimate. Has their driver team fallen drastically in numbers? Are they concentrating more on the new series of cards? Does the new memory interface on the new cards add to the complexity of writing drivers so its all hands on deck writing drivers for them?

Some answers would be nice but they obviously won't be forth coming. id software used to say "when its done" and look what happened to them, not been relevant in a decade plus. :o

This thread is full of rubbish, troll posts from nvidia users (gregster, mmj etc) and stupid poorly-made memes.

It's supposed to be a technical and support thread, stop thread crapping.

Your right any thread title with the word AMD in it is going to equal rubbish these days.

I have 2x290 Tri-X OCs have asked twice for support with project cars and the response has been...'we are working on it!' They can't even be bothered to define a time frame for the fix (if any) and more so any tips to make it work better in the meantime.

Everything in here is what AMD need to hear before it is too late.

So please get off your high horse and pretending that this AMD behaviour is anywhere close to acceptable!!

Do you think if AMD go under we could start a kick starter to continue driver support?

Maybe we could do it now?

Just get Omegadrive out of retirement :) well they did do a far better job with the old ATI drivers.

So no single\CF profile for witcher 3 as yet...

I am actually happy with my card. But I expect AMD to do better regarding customer support and drivers. If they don't they will lose more market share and soon have to make what looks like a small driver team smaller.

Worse thing is (if rumours are accurate) that they seem to think pricing their cards like nvidia will help them seem more like a premium product. If they don't price right, they will cheese off even their loyal customers and things will only get worse.

Look at the 295x2, it had a premium price tag, did that mean anything? Driver support delivered for that card was underwhelming to say the least... Now those people who got burnt won't be coming back any time soon. Due to the drivers I even hesitate to pick one up for £350. Had driver support been rock solid I would have gladly picked one up when it dropped to £500.

I hope AMDMatt understands this and passes this along.

That said, to end on a good note, I am actually pleasantly surprised with how well Witcher 3 is running on the current drivers. If new ones manage to improve things even more I will be pleased.

4k/30 locked ultra (no AA no Hairworks) is a lot lot lot better than 4k/60 with hbao turned down and stuff on medium with no DOF. the 4k30 still feels way smoother.

Hairworks looks terrible and it goes all over the place so I turned it off for aesthetic reasons not for performance reasons as it just looks shoddy and unrealistic.

Also turning on the AA option at 4k introduces some weird edges that look ugly and it drops performance to 22fps so that's out the window. Locked 30 for now but damn does the game flicker outside.

Eyetrip will be most pleased :D :p

Poor ******* bought 3x8GB 290X's before the drivers started going to Hell!!

At the moment, I am not touching Elite...

Though I am planning to again soon.

And I am sure when I do, I will still only have one card going.

Need to swap my cards around so they all get to do some work.

I like the fact people are bemoaning not rushing a driver out but there is currently a thread where people are talking about Nvidia's latest driver being causing all sorts of problems.

Rushing drivers out with problems is a big issue, for years Nvidia has had drivers for new games, then had like 12 versions within a week for the same damn game, all with various different problems.

I'd prefer a working driver which doesn't break everything and waiting several days. Even more importantly, the driver I've had installed for ages has had no actual issues in any games I can think of. I didn't need to install a new driver and I'm still getting 55-60fps in Witcher 3 with almost everything maxed out... I haven't tried hairworks but presume it would drop fps regardless of a new driver or not.

No, xfire isn't working, but the game is capped at 60fps(thanks to stupid devs) but the game is running great on a single card. Most games xfire works as I expect it to, a few I have to force it for a few days before I get a new driver, so what. Now and then you can force it but get issues... that is how games work. They get released they often have day 1 patches(and semi often have a day 2, 3,..., 12 patch) and with every little fix it can break and change the drivers.

I love the Nvidia trolls who simply behave like every single Nvidia driver is perfect and on time, neither is true. Despite being a TWIMTBP title, their Witcher 3 driver is causing problems for people... AND I don't care about that. Drivers that work for everything take time, a quick fix for one thing can have unforeseen consequences. I honestly don't care that Nvidia have driver problems, I only care that Nvidia users pretend they don't and that AMD drivers are all horrific.

The game is working fantastic for me, a new driver set can only improve on already good drivers for the game. This is absolutely not a case of ZOMG without a Witcher 3 driver I can't play the game, it's running at 4fps and I'm going to kill myself over it. It's a case of single 290, 55fps+ with near maxed out settings, with a new driver xfire will enable and I'll get 60fps.... I can wait.
