The AMD Driver Thread

Surely with AMD GPU's being used in both consoles, could amd not do something to cripple nvidia users if they really wanted to? Of course, it would be an awful decision if they could for a number of reasons and more importantly rather than nvidia taking to twitter etc. to blame amd for poor performance like what AMD do..... nvidia would probably file a lawsuit and bankrupt amd :p

EDIT:

I do think having AMD gpu's in both consoles has helped a decent bit though as the year older 290/290x still perform pretty damn well compared to the 970/980 cards and are even performing as good as the 780 ti now (although this could be due to nvidia not spending as much time optimising drivers for the 780/780 ti....)

I wonder what it would have been like if nvidia had got both consoles instead.

Witcher 3 is running pretty nice for me on my rig in sig (hey that rhymed! :p)

Using these settings:

foliage to medium
shadows set to high
hairworks, sharpening, chromatic, AA, blur crap are off
ambient occlusion set to SSAO
FPS lock slider to the left (unlimited)

FPS is pretty much locked to 55-60

Putting the FPS slider to unlimited seems to have sorted out most of my stuttering (still get some but not as much)

And using matson's sweetfx.

nVidia have close to 80% marketshare, it would be PC sales suicide :D

I vote for AMD to do their own black box stuff that cripples Nvidias cards, if they have been doing it to AMD for all these years.

same AMD his the dead horse lying in a ditch being beaten with a stick at this point whilst issuing fancy management statements claiming they are "focused" "committed"

Then you have their PR reps doing the same thing

Answering a question without actually telling people what they want to know.
I always aim for the toilet however as my GF would tell you sometimes I miss

Yea It's not your fault matt but why bother with reps if they are unable to answer simple questions and just tow the corporate line like a robot.

not we always aim thats the problem amd has been aiming for many years now when are they going to start shooting?
If you can guarantee one thing it's AMD will always be late with that driver and it comes out once your already bored of the game making it entirely pointless unless the plan is to have the driver ready for the steam sales

There was a time when the devs making the drivers would post on forums like rage3d do they even bother trying to communicate with the community directly any more?

I hope the driver helps my performance with Witcher 3, it is a complete stutter-fest despite getting over 100fps on medium. Unplayable. Yet there are others on AMD saying it runs smoothly, so I don't know :(

Just tried dying light 4k. Remember how bad that was? Runs like silk at 4k ultra max distance and 100% crossfire scaling with no artefacts. I have much hope here - no AA though as it makes things wiggle around weirdly same as Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 Ultra with 8X Hairworks on everything runs at 40-50fps @ 4k when you use AFR so once the flickering is fixed we are left with incredible scaling. I think lowering foliage distance one notch and shadows 1 or 2 notches seems to have no effect on the image quality but a good little boost for the framerate more towards 50-55. 60 is easy without hairworks on a 295x2.

Have to agree, its like politicians and trying to get a direct yes or no answer, they always skip around the issue and never really answer it. Not matts fault obviously but if all we can get is vague "skip around the issue" responses then whats the point?

He has answered the question hasn't he ?

He said we always aim, so they might hit, they might not :p

If they don't hit, then they got their aim wrong, just like the toilet analogy above, he may miss the toilet, but he was going for it. :D

Also, he'll obviously get some in the toilet, so he will hit it sometimes, just like AMD will sometimes hit, like they did with the GTA V driver. :p

I love my R9 295X2, but having started the Witcher 3 and not having working crossfire drivers, its unacceptable

I do believe Nvidia have done and will do questionable business practices, but i also believe they pump far more money and resources into ensuring games run on their hardware and work on release date.

I've spent tons on AMD hardware over the years, and the only constant has been poor drivers and late crossfire profiles.

I want to spend the weekend hammering the Witcher 3 and could get a big chunk of the game done.

I can either do this with the game running on reduced settings with a shaky framerate (and probably not want to play through the game again) , or i can wait for crossfire drivers and play it the way it should be played.

if i choose option 2, many Nvidia owners could have almost finished the game? When will these drivers actually arrive? (and when they do, i'm certain they won't be working properly due to being a beta)

Why should i have to wait to unlock the full power of a card i paid over £700 for?

I'm utterly sick and tired of AMD. I don't care how incredible Fuji XT might be with HBM, i will be choosing an Nvidia Pascal GPU next

151 days since the last driver...is this acceptable AMD?

Rant over

Its only been about 40 days since the last driver hasn't it ?

EDIT: That was the GTA V driver, but theres been that one with some freesync fixes as well after it, so its less than that.

how times have changed 2012 article
Yesterday, AMD announced that it would cease offering monthly driver updates, and instead issue Catalyst versions only "when it makes sense." That statement would be a good deal more comforting if it didn't "make sense" to upgrade AMD's drivers nearly every single month.

Before we go down that road, we want to acknowledge that AMD's announcement just puts an official company stamp on a de facto situation. From 2010 through 2011, AMD released a new Catalyst driver every month like clock work. Starting last summer, however, AMD began having trouble with high-profile game releases that performed badly, were visually corrupted, or both. Rage was one high-profile example, but there have been launch-day issues with a number of other games, including Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Arkham City, and Battlefield 3.

Maybe if they spent less time and resources on things like Freesync which only a small percentage of their customers use, and start improving the driver quality and frequency for AAA titles that the majority of their customers need, then we would be in a better place.

The list of issues "not resolved" on their drivers pages are often longer than the "fixed" issues!

The driver situation is the same now as it was when i had my 4870X2 quadfire and 5850+5970 Trifire

The fact a normal guy like me and you seems to have gone a long way to resolving the hairworks issues on AMD cards (which their own game developers seemed unable to do!!) says a lot.
